Tahoe has played a vital role in the development of my most treasured relationship, with my wife Lisa, where we both learned to care for much more than ourselves, and where we were married 25 years ago on the west shore.

Law enforcement prepares for possible New Year's Eve crowds on South Shore
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/29/2020 - 10:03pmEven with the current pandemic, New Year's revelers could still flock to the Stateline casino corridor and South Lake Tahoe on Thursday so law enforcement will be prepared. With no SnowGlobe this year due to the pandemic, and Heavenly Village New Year's Eve activities canceled, it is unknown as to what will take place in an area that at one time saw 50,000 people in the streets to bring in the new year. Last year it was estimated 7,000 to 8,000 people took to the streets at midnight at Stateline and 6,500 at Heavenly Village for its 9:00 p.m. fireworks.

California Tahoe Conservancy awards over $340,000 to Washoe Tribe to restore Meeks Meadow

Because in-person events have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the department chose this virtual ribbon-cutting event to acknowledge the efforts of its staff, contractor Q&D Construction and the collaboration with local partner agencies in making this challenging project a successful one.

Road closure near Camino for next several months
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2020 - 3:06pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Many from the South Lake Tahoe venture to the Camino area to visit apple and tree farms, but an upcoming road closure may affect normal routes.
A section of westbound Carson Road will be closed for several months due to bridge work as part of the U.S. Highway 50 Camino Safety Project.
Delay on release of U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe Safety Project draft documents
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/24/2020 - 11:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is planning a $16.8 million U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe Safety Project starting in South Lake Tahoe in 2023. Circulation of the project's Draft Environmental Document (DED) was expected on November 25, but it has been delayed, Caltrans announced Tuesday.
The safety project is proposing to install additional intersection and mid-block lighting, pedestrian signals and advisory signs from the “Y” intersection to Pioneer Trail.

LTCC awarded Blue Ribbon Tallac Achievement Award for Mobility Hub project

The award is given to an exemplary infrastructure project that revitalizes and enhances the economy and community of Tahoe’s South Shore.
North Upper Truckee boil water order to continue until final test results received
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 9:30pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those in the North Upper Truckee neighborhood in Meyers are still until a boil water advisory but that could be lifted Thursday. The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) has received good results on their first set of water samples from the North Upper Truckee neighborhood.
STPUD collected 30 water samples from the affected Tuesday evening. The tests for chlorine residuals came back normal (ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 parts per million) and no coliform bacteria was detected in any of the samples.
Lake Valley Fire releases holiday truck schedule
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 5:09pmThe time-honored tradition of Lake Valley Fire Protection District touring streets in their jurisdiction with a decorated fire engine returns starting December 11.
Due to COVID-19, the Holiday engine will not be handing out candy canes this year but all are welcome to wave and say hello from a safe social distance. Each night they start their trek between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Boil water order in place for North Upper Truckee area
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/17/2020 - 6:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Public Utility District has issued a boil water alert for the North Upper Truckee neighborhood for all streets off North Upper Truckee between Highway 50 and Zuni Drive, and the Chiapa neighborhood. The boil water advisory is issued out of an abundance of caution and is expected to be resolved by Thursday evening or Friday morning.
New stop signs installed on South Lake Tahoe streets to improve safety
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/17/2020 - 3:52pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are three new stop signs in the Rocky Point neighborhood of South Lake Tahoe in response to complaints about speeding vehicles and unclear lines of sight.
Last week City of South Lake Tahoe Public Works staff installed stop signs at Chonokis Road and Rocky Point Road, and on Montreal Avenue at Moss and Fern roads.
The City hired a traffic engineer to do an assessment of the conditions after they received complaints and requests to look at speeders using the neighborhood to bypass Highway 50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard through the casino corridor.

Victim in fatal head-on collision identified as South Lake Tahoe resident
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/05/2020 - 3:05pmZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The victim of Tuesday's deadly crash on US Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove has been identified as a South Lake Tahoe resident.
At 6:25 p.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to a head-on collision at Douglas County miler marker 3.
The NHP preliminary investigation shows a black 2011 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling eastbound on the highway approaching a right curve in the roadway. At that same time, a gray 2003 Honda Element was approaching the same curve as the driver headed westbound.
Lanes currently closed due to fatal collision on US 50 near Zephyr Cove
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/03/2020 - 8:06pm7:40 p.m. Update: Two vehicles were involved at US-50 and Douglas Mile Marker 3, east of Stateline on Tuesday evening. There is one confirmed deceased according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. They said impairment is suspected.
The highway is still shut down in both directions for the investigation. Avoid the area and expect the closure to last several hours.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - US Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove is closed in both directions this evening due to a fatal collusion at 6:25 p.m. The Nevada Highway Patrol is telling drivers to take an alternate route as of 7:05 p.m.
Lane closure in South Lake Tahoe for pilot project as Caltrans paints bike lane green
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/03/2020 - 7:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a lane closure on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe later this week for a pilot project to paint a section of the bike lane green.
The closure is scheduled for the eastbound #2 lane from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday between Dunlap Drive and 3rd Street to apply the paint treatment.

While fall is generally a treasured time of year at the lake, a sense of uneasiness hangs in the crisp air as we brace for the next phase of the COVID crisis.
Summer was record breaking on many fronts. Businesses and agencies with major staff and budget shortages were suddenly required to manage the pandemic, following strict protocols. Trash overflowed on our pristine beaches and roadways. Follow that with more than 8,300 wildfires and 4 million acres burned in California alone.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Tahoe Transportation District have released a public draft of the Main Street Management Plan, setting the stage for a major makeover to a 1-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 50 in the Stateline area near Heavenly Village and the casino core.
An 18-member stakeholder working group and multiple public input sessions helped shape the plan over the past two years. The plan outlines how the street would look, feel, and function after U.S. Highway 50 is realigned through the U.S. 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project.

El Dorado County Animal Services rescues two dogs abandoned on US50
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/28/2020 - 9:32pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County Animal Services is looking for information from anyone who may have witnessed two German Shepherd dogs being abandoned on Highway 50 near Bridal Veil Falls and Fresh Pond in earlier this month. The young adult male dogs, which were found malnourished and with their metal chain collars embedded into their necks, were rescued by Animal Services officers and are now safely at the Animal Services Shelter in Diamond Springs.
US50 over Echo Summit opens five days early
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/27/2020 - 9:36amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 is back open to traffic over Echo Summit five days ahead of schedule, Caltrans announced today.
A full closure of Highway 50 over the summit was implemented Friday, Sept. 18 to install seven precast, prestressed 96-foot bridge girders and associated work that included pouring ultra high-performance concrete to connect the girders, building concrete barrier walls and approach slabs, applying a polyester overlay on the bridge, and asphalt paving approaching both sides of the new structure.
U.S. Highway 50 Echo Summit project ahead of schedule
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/23/2020 - 2:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews working on replacing the 81-year-old bridge on US50 over Echo Summit are ahead of schedule and the road may reopen before the previous opening date of October 2. The ultra high-performance concrete that connects the seven 96-foot girders has cured and the bridge is at strength.
Wednesday morning the inside concrete barrier rail was poured and the outside concrete barrier rail is planned to be poured on Thursday. Asphalt paving on the approaches to the bridge is planned to start this Sunday.
Echo Summit project remains ahead of schedule
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/22/2020 - 4:52pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All seven of the 96-foot long girders have been placed on US50 at Echo Summit. Over night, ultra-high performance concrete was poured to connect them and now heating blankets are keeping the concrete warm during its curing process.
NEXT STEPS
Concrete barrier rail is planned to be poured starting tomorrow morning.
Asphalt paving on the approaches to the bridge is planned to start this Sunday.
According to Caltrans, the project remains ahead of schedule to reopen by or before Oct. 2.

US50 over Echo Summit closes early Friday for bridge replacement
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/17/2020 - 1:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The planned two-week closure of U.S. Highway 50 along a 1.2 mile stretch of Echo Summit will begin Friday, September 18 at 3:00 a.m. One-lane controlled traffic has been happening all week, and now both lanes will be closed as crews replace the 1939 bridge with brand new girders to meet seismic and safety standards.
Fire Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Thursday-Friday
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/15/2020 - 8:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch to be in effect for Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. through Friday at 8:00 p.m.
Winds will be from the southwest on Thursday, shifting to west on Friday. Sustained winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph possible for both days. Strongest gusts Thursday could be US Highway 50 north and on Friday could be US Highway 50 south. Winds in valleys should weaken late Thursday evening, while Sierra ridges continue to gust in the 70-90 mph range overnight.

Scientists are also measuring wilder weather patterns, more severe droughts, and changing ecosystems as the planet’s temperature rises. More drought means more dead trees, and hotter summers mean a longer and more
