SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the 40-day old Creek Fire is expected to reach the Lake Tahoe Basin Friday with the forecast west winds. The first wave of smoke is expected by dawn Friday and could last until evening. Much of the region could experience widespread haze.
The fire, burning on both sides of the San Joaquin River near Mammoth Pool, Shaver Lake, Big Creek and Huntington Lake has burned 341,722 acres and it is 58 percent contained. 1,000 personnel are still assigned to the massive fire burning in Fresno and Madera counties. 856 structures have been restored, 71 damaged and there have been 23 injuries to date.
The cause of the fire, which started over the Labor Day weekend, is still under investigation.
The Slink Fire near Topaz Lake has burned 26,759 acres and is now 90 percent contained. It is not generating smoke that would reach Lake Tahoe.
It too started September 4 and the cause is under investigation.
