Mya Rossi, a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, has won the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship. The middle schooler is passionate about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and wanted to attend the Science Camp of America: Air and Space in Hawaii so she applied for the prestigious scholarship.
“I can’t believe that they chose me!" said Mya. "I am so excited to explore this opportunity in Hawaii, thanks to the Hank Aaron Scholarship.”
Nationally this scholarship is awarded to Boys & Girls Club members to help them develop their skills. In 1994, Hank Aaron and his wife Billye founded the Chasing The Dream Foundation to help youth with exceptional abilities and limited financial resources a chance at chasing their dream. Scholarships up to $3,500 are awarded annually to 44 Club members.
Mya's scholarship is in the amount of $3,025, enough to get her to the Hawaii science camp.
Mya has been very active in STEM throughout her school work as well as in extracurricular activities. She was one of three in the Lake Tahoe Basin to win a scholarship to the Tech Trek Camp of UC Davis this past summer, she participates every year in Snapshot day with Boys & Girls Club and The League to Save Lake Tahoe. In 5th grade, Mya helped design different planters to help the plants grow safely so they won't be disturbed by animals or humans. With an average GPA of 4.0, Mya is known to be a hard worker as well as a talented scientist.
Upon hearing the great news of Mya being awarded the scholarship, Ashley Borchers, Program Coordinator said “Mya deserves this scholarship more than anyone I know. She has been a hard worker since the first day I met her, almost 4 years ago, and I am excited to see her excel in her passion for science.”
Mya was also this year’s Youth-of-the-Year for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe and has spoken to many people about the impact that the Club has had on her life. With this scholarship, Mya will have the opportunity of a life time thanks to this amazing opportunity through the Boys & Girls Club of America.
