South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club donates to local projects

Three local community groups were recently awarded grants form the South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club. The Drug Store Project was given $1,000, H.E.R.O Scholarship Fund $2,000 and the Sierra House Elementary 5th Grade Nature Bridge $1,500.

The Drug Store Project, which is operated under the guidance of Tahoe Youth and Family Services will use the money to continue its annual youth drug awareness and avoidance program in 2016. This is program is designed to reduce future drug experimentation/use/abuse and increase student knowledge about the dangers of drug and alcohol use.

Three classes (80 students) of Sierra House Elementary fifth graders will be attending educational programs at the Nature Bridge at the Marin Highlands in 2016 to learn science in a completely new natural environment.

The H.E.R.O. Scholarship Fund, Inc. was set up 18 years ago as an anonymous donation for those students who have overcome seriously difficult obstacles to graduate high school or community college and continue their education.

“Our service organization is proud of the work of community groups to serve our youth and people in need and to fund local projects that benefit South Lake Tahoe and the South Shore,” said Rotary President David Jinkens. “We are grateful as well for our residents, friends of Rotary and business owners and operators who generously support our fundraising activities that make these grants possible,” he added.

The Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe is now meeting three times per month on Wednesday at noon at Harvey’s. Guests and members of the community are welcome to attend. Please check our website for details at http://www.sltrotary.org.
