A former South Lake Tahoe resident visiting family for the holidays on the South Shore was on his way home to La Mesa, California when he and girlfriend were involved in a three-car head-on collision south of Kramer's Crossing on Highway 395 near Victorville on December 28, 2017.
Chris "Coco" Cocores, 26, was in a Toyota Corolla driven by his girlfriend, 21-year-old Cecilia Casares, when the car crossed over a solid yellow line to pass a slower vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. They collided with two vehicles heading northbound.
Casares died at the scene along with the couple's dog.
Cocores was transported to an area hospital where he is recovering from a broken arm, broken back and internal injuries. He has undergone surgery on his stomach and arm according to brother Casey Nord.
A graduate of South Tahoe High School in 2009, Cocores is a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) title holder. He is the son of John Cocores and grandson of Peggy Cocores, both long-time South Lake Tahoe residents.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to try and raise $100,000 to cover medical and funeral expenses. The "Team Coco" page can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/team-coco.
