Outdoor Education Night at Lake Tahoe Aleworx LTEF fundraiser

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the 20th of each month in 2020, the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF) is teaming up with Lake Tahoe AleWorx for a fundraising series where all proceeds during the evening will go to the special projects of LTEF.

Each month LTEF and South Tahoe Now will spotlight the event and feature information about a different area of the local education programs offered through Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and supported by LTEF.

Early Christmas presents for several groups in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado Community Foundation played Santa Wednesday night, handing out checks for 29 different projects in the South Lake Tahoe area that help both children, education and adults.

Carmen Elaine Withrow 1942 ~ 2019

Carmen Elaine Withrow (Terrell) passed away peacefully on October 8th, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, she will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved her. She was a compassionate person, kind to everyone, not one to talk about others and always there for you in a time of need. She was born on June 19, 1942 at home in Whitt, Texas, the youngest of 6 children and 12 years younger than the next oldest sibling.

Multiple agencies participate in South Lake Tahoe active shooter drill

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An active shooting training at South Tahoe High School last week gave local, state and federal agencies the opportunity to use their collaborative skills in responding to an emergency at the school.

In the simulated event after school, a call went over the radios on a secure channel to alert all first responders of a shooting at the high school and with the shooter still on the loose. At the first call, there were seven "victims" (volunteers acting for the training).

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

After a fun homecoming week, students of South Tahoe High School bare down for the upcoming week of midterms and testing. The fall sports season is coming to an end.

On Campus
Midterms are Thursday and Friday next week. Study labs are held after school for support and tutoring in different courses before the tests. Midterms mark the halfway point for the first term of the 2019-2020 year. The stress begins to increase, especially for the seniors.

First responders and partners to train for mass casualty incident in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Several different agencies will come together in South Lake Tahoe to train for a mass casualty incident on Wednesday, October 16, from 3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

The public may see and hear things around South Tahoe High School and Barton Memorial Hospital during this training exercise that may appear serious due to the responding South Lake Tahoe Police Department, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Cal Tahoe JPA, Barton Health, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces awardees of $84,000 in grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has announced their 2019 grant recipients. This year, there were over 27 organizations who applied for the grants, with $84,000 being distributed to 14 non-profit organizations

South Tahoe Sports Med students place third in weekend competition

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High's Sports Medicine students earned impressive third-place honors at the 18th annual High School Sports Medicine Competition at UC Northridge this past weekend. They competed against 700 students from 50 high schools from western states including Kansas, Texas, Washington, and California.

This is the third year the school's Sports Medicine Coordinator Isaiah Tannaci has taken a group of his students to the competition. The first year the group went to observe and learn, the second year they came in tenth, and now a top-three finish.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office asking for assistance in finding teen

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating a 17-year-old who failed to make it home after school on Wednesday, February 13.

The whereabouts of Kyli Mastria are unknown.

Deputies do not know at this time if Kyli is missing or a runaway.

"Stop the Bleed" presented to Lake Tahoe Unified teachers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Teachers at South Tahoe High stayed after school Tuesday to learn what Homeland Security and the FBI want them to - how to correctly apply a tourniquet and help survivors should there be a mass casualty event.

Level III Trauma Center surgeon, Kimberly Evans, MD, FACS and Barton’s Trauma Program Manager, Cate Neal, RN joined South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Captain Kim George in presenting "Stop the Bleed," a programs created by the Department of Homeland Security and American College of Surgeons to teach lay people how to care for trauma victims.

Schools on the South Shore open; Douglas County on 90 minute delay

All schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (South Lake Tahoe) will be open on Wednesday, January 16 but there are some program cancellations - All after[school AAA programs are cancelled, STHS cross country practice going to Kirkwood cancelled as are the high school alpine practices at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Up at the North Shore, Truckee Tahoe School District schools are closed. All school activities are cancelled unless notified otherwise.

Sierra House Elementary students move to full-day schedules at STMS/Al Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since a fire destroyed a section of Sierra House Elementary on November 11, 2018, students and staff have been dealing with the smoke damage, relocation, and minimum school days.

Just before the winter break classes were held at the Al Tahoe Elementary school site, home of the Boys & Girls Club, but that plan will now change starting January 14, 2018.

Parents question safety at Sierra House Elementary after school reopens soon after fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire that destroyed a hallway, reading room and teacher's room on Sunday, November 11 was just seconds away from engulfing all of Sierra House Elementary. Had it not been for the quick response by Lake Valley Fire Protection District the discussion would be about replacing the 44-year-old South Lake Tahoe school rather than the processes involved to get it cleaned up and opened in just two days.

Missing Placerville boy spotted in South Lake Tahoe

A 13-year-old boy missing from the Placerville area was spotted near Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, but by the time law enforcement he had left the area.

Patrick Siebenthaler ran away after school on September 24,. 2018 He has done that before and normally returned after a day or two, but this time he hasn't been seen or heard from in over five weeks. Patrick fled without having any extra clothing, money or supplies to utilize as one may do when it's planned.

Director and staff sought for spring musical at South Tahoe Middle School

Do you love the theater? Do you enjoy working with youth? The Tahoe Arts Project (TAP) is seeking a director, technical director, music director and choreographer for their spring South Tahoe Middle School musical theater performance.

Rehearsals will begin in February, and the musical production will be held in May. The performers will have rehearsals immediately after school at STMS, 2 - 3 days per week.

A stipend will be offered for each position.

Chuck Montgomery 1954~2018

Charles Reinhardt "Chuck" Montgomery passed peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2018 in South Lake Tahoe, California with his family by his side. He was 64 years old. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana June 28, 1954, Chuck was the first born son of Charles Williams Montgomery (1932-1970) and Eleanora Irene Hodges Montgomery Kroeger.

New after school theater club at South Tahoe Middle School

New Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High already big success

The South Lake Tahoe community came together early in 2016 to raise money for a new Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High, and the investment is already paying huge dividends.

"This room is changing the culture of our school," said STHS Football Coach Louis Franklin. "Having a room like this allows each kid to reach their genetic potential."

Student athletes are getting stronger, injuries are down and they are able to maximize their potential on the court, the field, the pool, or whatever the venue is for their sport. Cheerleaders and dancers also utilize the facility.

Sierra House wins Let's Move! Active Schools National Award

'Keep the Lights on' event highlights need for after school programs

Lack of childcare in South Lake Tahoe an issue for parents and the community

You hear of the "great recession" causing issues in many areas from jobs and income to housing, but another victim is quality child care in South Lake Tahoe.

Prior to 2009 there were over 45 licensed day care providers on the South Shore, a majority of them licensed for 12 children and open evenings and weekends. Now, there are just 20, 12 of which are licensed for 12, the other eight are small licenses, for six children or less.

New student interns announced for Mt. Tallac High School to Career Program

Mt. Tallac High School would like to congratulate the following students for being chosen as the first round of interns to participate in the Mt. Tallac High School, School to Career program. Interns will learn job skills by working with school personnel in various jobs after school. After spending 3 months interning, attending counseling, and working on job readiness skills students will be placed for internships at South Tahoe Refuse our career partner as well as various local businesses. Our hope is that these students will gain the necessary skills to obtain employment in the community.

South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park

Boulder, Colorado has one. Portland, Oregon has one. Even Roseville and Truckee, California have one. If plans go as they appeared to during a presentation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, South Lake Tahoe will soon have one.

"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.

Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.

Autopsy released on teen killed in South Lake Tahoe

When Dejon Smith left home after school on December 11, like any teen facing a snow day the following day, he told his parents he was headed out for the evening. He did not tell them where he was going or with whom he would be.

Missing South Lake Tahoe boy found dead; apparent victim of falling tree

South Lake Tahoe Police found the body of a missing 14 year old South Tahoe High freshman on Saturday afternoon.

Dejon Smith had been missing since Thursday afternoon when he never returned home after heading out to play after school. Police responded to the 1100 block of Wildwood Avenue to follow up on a report of a missing juvenile. They followed leads with no results at that time.

The Bijou Community Playground represents a community effort and shows what we can do when we all come together and each do a little. "Many hands make for light work" is a true phenomenon here at Bijou School. Since 2007, with the inception of the Two Way Immersion program, and our forced volunteering program, the parents, staff and community members have consistently been spending time, funds, and those blood, sweat and tears we always talk about at this school. The new playground, as well as the field and park behind it, is a tangible representation of the volunteer force here at Bijou.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Offers Summer Fun for Kids

Over 120 kids have taken advantage of the summer programs at the Boys and Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe. They started the summer off with a bang with a plethora of activities in the first week. They went swimming at the recreation center, enjoyed ice hockey, spent time building paddleboards, went ice skating, had drama club, golf club and bmx club, Jr Staff program, beach trips, trout creek, water day, soccer, sewing, and many more fun activities.

There are still opening available but they are going quickly.

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe would like to thank the One Medical Group for donating 15 bikes to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. We were lucky enough to receive 8 girls’ bikes and 7 boys’ single speed Huggy bikes with matching helmets.

We plan to utilize these during our summer program to teach the members bike safety and how to properly ride a bike as well as integrating them into our programs.

Boys and Girls Club Teens to Build Paddle Boards

Thanks to Tahoe Maritime Museum and a generous grant from the Lana Vento Charitable Trust, there is an exciting opportunity at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe this summer. During the first weeks of summer a selected group of teen members will work together with Tahoe Maritime Museum volunteers to build Kaholo Stand Up Paddleboards from Chesapeake Light Craft.

No Bomb Found During Search of South Lake Tahoe's Y

Customers and employees were evacuated from businesses around noon today at the South Y Center in response to suspicious circumstances surrounding an overheard conversation and a possible bomb.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department received a call from an employee at the South Y K-Mart, stating they had overheard a suspicious conversation between store patrons. The employee stated that the patrons had exited the store and that the employee walked around the shopping center and reported hearing a ticking sound coming from the shopping center general mailbox.

Grand Opening of South Lake Tahoe's Youth Sports & Recreation

Youth Sports and Recreation celebrated a ribbon cutting on January 31
with Tahoe Chamber on hand to officiate. Owner Tim Wesley invited guests
to tour his facility and learn more about the business, which operates to promote physical activity and provide nutritional education to children ages 5 to 17.

Youth Sports and Recreation also provides a tutoring center for after school care. Instructors demonstrated martial arts while children tried
the various machines available, including stationary bikes that allowed riders to play video games as they cycled.
