New small fire in Christmas Valley area of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a new lightning-caused fire in the upper, eastern side of Christmas Valley area Tuesday afternoon. Crews were at the scene quickly and there is also helicopter support.
Crew 45 from the USFS-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Zephyr Crew 21 are at the remote scene near Luther Spires.
A single-tree caught on fire as did a 30x30 foot square of brush.
Smoke is visible from Alert Tahoe cameras.
A second, smaller fire on Ward Peak, along with Monday's fire on Luther Pass are out, and were kept to less than 1/10 acre.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe and the Sierra had a lot of lightning and thunder Tuesday afternoon, leading to a few fire starts in the area. The Alert Tahoe Fire Camera system was active with fire officials able to zoom in on possible problem areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What would happen if fire-fighting agencies could stop a wildfire before it gains momentum and wipes out homes, communities and/or forests? That is being answered with well over 100 fire cameras now in place across the west, all because of foresight of Dr. Graham Kent, the Director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).

Over 50 possible major forest firest have been prevented in the Lake Tahoe Basin since the AlertTahoe camera system was installed around the lake over the last four years. The combination of technology, human observation and firefighters on the ground kept those small fires contained to a space of less than one acre.
Firefighters jump quickly on lightning caused tree fire near South Lake Tahoe

Firefighters quickly took care of a fire between Christmas Valley and Luther Pass Saturday afternoon after a tree was ignited by a strike of lightning as a strong storm system moved through parts of the South Shore.
Lake Valley Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service responded after several calls were received about smoke being seen in the area.
Called the Tucker Fire, it involved a single tree the fire was contained to a 5ft x 5ft area with the help of water drops by a helicopter.
AlertTahoe camera monitoring potential Truckee River flooding in Reno

The University of Nevada Seismological Lab operates around Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada to monitor earthquake and wildfire data, but now they're helping with flood monitoring.
They have placed a temporary camera above the Truckee River at on Arlington Street in Reno. The view is updated every minute and can be seen here: http://floodwatch.nvseismolab.org/
Small fire burning near Genoa Peak

4:25 p.m. update: The U.S. Forest Service said the fire that burned near Genoa Peak turned out to be an abandoned campfire that wasn't properly doused. The fire burned about a 10 foot x 10 foot patch on private land adjacent to the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest near the Tahoe Rim Trail.
It is currently smoldering after firefighters arrived quickly and were able to gain the upper hand quickly.

There is a fire reported at Genoa Peak. Multiple agencies are responding and we'll update the story once more is known.
Fire west of Lake Tahoe held to 25 acres; Now 60% contained

7:20 p.m. update 8-7-16: Firefighters will soon be in clean up mode on the Alder Fire after they made good progress today. They strengthened lines today increasing the containment of the fire to 60 percent.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
9:00 a.m. update 8-7-16: Firefighters made good progress on the Alder Fire overnight and the fire is now 40 percent contained. The amount of brush and timber burned has been updated to 25 acres.
Four fires burning north of Reno adding to smoke in Lake Tahoe basin

Four separate fires are burning north of Reno, sending smoke throughout Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin.
The Virginia Mountains Complex is made up currently of four separate wildland fires, including the Anderson (5626 acres), Sage (4239 acres), Seven Lakes (3063 acres) and Tule (7267 acres) Fires. All of these lightning-caused fires are burning within about 20-miles of each other in an arc about 35-miles north of Reno.
The vast majority of the public lands burning are administered by the Bureau of Land Management-Carson City District.
Nine years since Angora Fire: AlertTahoe cameras try to avoid another disaster

Nine years after the devastating Angora Fire in South Lake Tahoe, the AlertTahoe system of cameras around the Lake Tahoe basin is helping to prevent another such disaster.
June 6, 2016: The Sagehen Fire, north of Truckee, broke out and was quickly extinguished by the USFS, Northstar and Truckee Fire Departments.
June 9, 2016: The Truckee Meadows Fire Department quickly put out the Patrick Fire off Interstate 80, near Reno.

ALERT Tahoe is a new, one-of-a-kind, fire camera and multi-hazard tracking system that includes smoke investigation, prescribed fire oversight, wildfire tracking, Earthquake Early Warning, and monitoring of extreme weather events. A prototype of the fire camera system is functioning, scoring early successes during the summer of 2014.
Dr. Kent will present on the existing and planned camera system, in an incredibly interesting presentation.
