James Grant named director of Mountain Operations for Heavenly Mountain Resort

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe has named James Grant as its director of Mountain Operations. Grant was promoted from his role as director of Lift Operations. Meanwhile, Heavenly’s director of Snow Surfaces, Jim Larmore, has been named the new director of Mountain Operations at Northstar California Resort.

South Lake Tahoe resident, Barton Health Employee Stella Ortega lands top spot on Dr. Oz Show

South Lake Tahoe resident and Barton Health employee, Stella Ortega, made it to the top 10 on Dr. Oz Show-Transformation Nation: Million Dollar You segment. Ortega is among 10 finalists to earn a spot in the show's season-long initiative. Viewers can vote on which finalist they feel should win the grand prize of $1 million by going to www.doctoroz.com. The winner will be announced on “The Dr. Oz Show” scheduled to air on May 23.

Sierra Wins Award for Most Heart-Warming Video with Burton Star Wars Experience

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort is honored to be recognized by Ski Area Management in the Best Video category of their 2011-12 Marketing Awards. Produced by First Track Productions Sierra received the "Most Heart-Warming Video" award featuring the Burton Star Wars Experience.
In its inaugural year, the Burton Star Wars Experience is a snowboard experience that introduces three to six year-old kids how to snowboard in an interactive environment like no other.

Two percent TOT funds Tahoe City project; future money for Kings Beach

The existing 2 percent Transient Occupancy Tax, which is up for renewal on the June 5, 2012 ballot, has funded a number of North Lake Tahoe public improvement projects and services since voters first authorized it in 1996.

The renewal, called Measure F, is not a tax increase and, if passed, would continue to be paid by lodging guests only via the TOT bed tax when they spend the night in North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe residents would not be taxed under Measure F.

Diamond Peak’s 12th Annual Dummy Downhill

Diamond Peak will continue the tradition of the Dummy Downhill on April 1, 2012. This will be the 12th year for the community’s favorite event of the season.
Participants build a dummy on skis or a snowboard that gets launched off a big jump on Showoff run. Categories include Best Crash, Longest Jump, Most Creative, Shortest Distance and whatever else the judges decide to make up.

Lake Tahoe planning agency announces 2011 Best in The Basin award winners

Recognized for stewardship and care taken in the building and construction of developments around Lake Tahoe, the 22nd annual Best in the Basin awards were announced Tuesday by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
The TRPA, which sets policy for development around Lake Tahoe, will recognize the winners, listed below, during the 2011 Best in the Basin awards presentation during the meeting of its Governing Board on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in Stateline. Go here for the agenda.

Freestyle skiing trailblazer Sarah Burke dies after Jan. 10 training accident

Canadian freeskier Sarah Burke died Thursday in a Salt Lake City hospital, nine days after crashing at the bottom of the superpipe during a training run in Utah. Burke, who lived near Whistler in British Columbia, was 29. She was injured Jan. 10 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.
Tests revealed Burke suffered "irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest," according to a statement released by Burke's publicist, Nicole Wool.

TRPA Planner Earns Chamber’s Blue Ribbon Award

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency employee Gary Weigel was honored as the recipient of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s Blue Ribbon Award in the Public Agency Service category for his exemplary customer service as a Senior Planner at TRPA.

“I was shocked and pleasantly surprised when I found out I had been selected for a Blue Ribbon Award by the community,” Weigel said, “but also very excited. It’s a tremendous honor.”

TRPA’s Executive Director, Joanne Marchetta, agreed.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Receives Report Card

South Lake Tahoe Unified School District recently received the Academic Performance Index scores for the year 2011.
The API Target is 800 or above. Overall, the district dropped one point from 2010 (781 to 780). Below are the detailed scores for each school:
The Magnet school dropped 4 points to 935 - However it is the highest score in all of El Dorado County.
Bijou went from 718 to 701, having made substantial gains from 689 in 2009.
Sierra House did well in gaining 13 points 813 to 836.

South Lake Tahoe Finance Department Recognized for Accounting

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada has awarded the City of South Lake Tahoe the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the City's FY 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). According to a city press release, this certificate is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
