Free writing workshop for veterans in South Lake Tahoe

The free, drop-in workshop is open to all veterans and all skill levels are encouraged. The workshops will be held on Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College, Room A206, near the LTCC Veterans Resource Center.

Bona Fide Books in Meyers will celebrate "Have Paints, Will Travel" on Friday night. Plein Air painer Ginny Schakerman's art will be on display during the reception which will include music and libations from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 6.
The reception is a kick off to Bona Fide's new community mercantile and print shop. Owner Kim Wyatt has been offering class at the store, from book making to prints.
Schakerman's art will be on display all month at the Meyer's book store.

Owner Liza Utzig Schafer, a long time local resident, opened the shop in December and she says she's been busy ever since.
One can call her store an "in-person" Etsy, which is an e-commerce website full of handmade, unique and vintage items and supplies. Schafer's store is full of craft items, locally handmade items as well as things from independent artists.

Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/01/2014 - 6:38amWith blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.
One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

Success at 4th Annual Sample the Sierra

The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.
Local poet, LTCC faculty member Janet Smith wins national award
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 08/13/2013 - 7:25amSouth Lake Tahoe poet and LTCC English faculty Janet Smith has won the 2013 Guy Owen Prize for her poem “The Children’s Section.” The poem, for which Smith received $1000, will appear in the fall issue of the “Southern Poetry Review.”
Poet Arthur Smith chose the poem from a short list of finalists.
“The subject matter, the reading experience in childhood, could have been easily sentimentalized, but the poet consistently pulls back from that with an even more powerful detail which sees into the heart of the creation of the imagination,” he said.

Cathy’s depiction of a Tahoe bear standing in an aspen grove of cascading leaves is playfully symbolic of our shared acceptance of this magical season of change with our bears and wildlife. Hicks, who lives in Strawberry, CA with her son, says that her photographs reveal the things that people often don’t see, and this is what she finds most interesting in her subjects. She favors black and white film, because “It’s more honest.”

Inspired by jazz legends Miles, Coltrane, Brubeck and more, her oil paintings will lift your spirits, as will the accompanying live jazz band. Refreshments will be provided.
