Health & Human Services reducing hours of South Lake Tahoe office due to COVID-19
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/12/2020 - 1:14pmIn response to the recent increased number of COVID-19 cases in the South Lake Tahoe region, the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) Self Sufficiency office located at 3368 Sandy Way in South Lake Tahoe is temporarily reducing the hours that the lobby is open to the public. Beginning Monday, December 14, 2020, the lobby will be open to the public Monday - Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for persons needing to conduct business in person.
El Dorado County Income Support programs in South Lake Tahoe moving into new home
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/16/2019 - 8:38pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, General Assistance, Welfare-to-Work programs and Employment Resource Center for El Dorado County at South Lake Tahoe will be moving into a new location on October 28.
The County announced earlier this year they had purchased the old post office at 3368 Sandy Way in order to move offices over from across the street as a "new campus" is created for services.

The public is invited to a Community Health Fair in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, October 17 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Bijou Community School;s multi-purpose room. Get free or reduced services including flu shots and free dinner from Tacos Por Favor.
El Dorado County will be offering their low-cost flu shots - $10 for everyone six months and older, but they won’t turn anyone away that can’t pay.
Free services include:
- Primary care will be there conducting blood pressure, temperatures, and pulse oximetry
- Covered CA enrollment counselors
- CPR training

October is National Farm to School Month, and in South Lake Tahoe, the UC Cooperative Extension CalFresh nutrition education program has partnered with Barton Health and Lake Tahoe Unified School District to implement Harvest of the Month, a statewide initiative that motivates students to make healthier choices and brings fresh, in season produce to all South Lake Tahoe elementary schools.

This summer, the FRC was especially busy with the ninth year of Parabajitos, an early intervention and prevention program that aims to engage youth and strengthen their connection with their community. The FRC is also home to the Bijou Community Garden, a project started four years ago by community member Brian Hirdman.

EBT card system down for 24 hours next weekend
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/13/2018 - 4:35pmThose who use Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, including CalFresh and CalWORKS issued cards, will be unable to use them for a 24-hour period so the State of California can transition to a new EBT vendor.
THe statewide 24-hour EBT outage and black-out period is scheduled from Saturday, June 23, 2018, beginning at 11:00 p.m. and going until Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 11:00 p.m. During this 24-hour period, those using the EBT cards will be unable to access benefits, nor will they be able to access the program's website at www.ebt.ca.gov.
New technology for El Dorado County makes it easier to access benefits

Through a secure internet portal at www.C4yourself.com, individuals can complete their applications and annual renewals, submit documents, and check the status of their case online at any time; they can also access their case information over the phone via the State’s secure Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System at any time.

Boys & Girls Club proposes idea of new home to LTUSD
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/14/2017 - 11:57pmWhat is currently six portable buildings at the Al Tahoe school site could be a new home for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT). That is the idea Jude Wood presented to the school board Tuesday night.
Wood, the BGCLT Executive Director, spoke in front of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's Trustees, giving them a look into a proposed partnership and future facility use agreement with the District with a new Clubhouse built on District owned property. The Club would fully fund the new building.
Scam targeting users of CalWORKS and CalFresh

Though there are no known victims in El Dorado County, the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) would like to let all users of electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to be on the lookout for potential scammers using text messaging.
South Lake Tahoe students take the WeCan! fitness and nutrition challenge
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/15/2014 - 9:52pmAlmost 2,000 elementary students from South Lake Tahoe completed the WeCan! fitness and nutritional program on Friday, October 10.
Students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade at Bijou, Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet, Sierra House and Tahoe Valley Elementary Schools participated in the four week program.
The students participated in weekly challenges that focused on fitness and nutrition goals. Challenges included eating fruits and vegetables of a particular color, drinking more water, stretching, exercising and trying new healthy foods.
South Lake Tahoe Hunger Issues Addressed in Meeting and Food Distribution
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/24/2014 - 7:39pmThe Food Bank of El Dorado County was in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday to accomplish two things: Distribute emergency food supplies to locals in need, and to hold a meeting with South Lake Tahoe agencies who assist people living with hunger.
In 2013, the El Dorado County Food Bank distributed 1.8 million pounds of food to county residents with a value of $3,000,000. The agency is not county funded and gets their food from donations, private donors, growers, businesses and the USDA.
