Last week's five snow days, and a lack of one this week caused some parents to raise concern with how the Lake Tahoe Unified School (LTUSD) decides when to close school for the day.
Closing school is always a tough call for school superintendents across the country, so what is the science behind closing schools when it snows in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District?
El Dorado County teen arrested for murdering relative
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/19/2017 - 10:39pmWhat first appeared to be a case of a 16-year-old high school student bringing a loaded firearm onto campus Thursday quickly turned into a murder investigation.
At 8:00 a.m. January 19, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) was notified that a student at Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs had been detained for bringing a loaded firearm onto campus. Upon deputies arrival at the school, they placed the student under arrest for the possession of the firearm.
Cars parked on streets causing major problems for snowplows
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/19/2017 - 6:03pmSnowplow operators have been working 12-hour shifts to get the roads in South Lake Tahoe cleared of snow, and they will continue widening roads starting Friday to prepare for the next storm.
During winter snow conditions, snow plows have the right of way on streets and vehicles left unattended in the streets are subject to a citation and/or getting towed. Law enforcement is seeing a large number of cars parked on neighborhood streets and not where they belong in driveways.
New telephone scam targeting South Lake Tahoe residents
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/19/2017 - 9:43amSouth Lake Tahoe residents in South Lake Tahoe have been receiving calls from people pretending to be from Microsoft, and the SLT Police Department wants to alert the public on the scam.
A local senior couple was recently contacted, and the scammers told them they had overpaid Microsoft in the past and Microsoft wanted to refund them the money. The scammer had the victims turn on their computer and give them remote access.
Vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe still divisive topic

"Our biggest fear is that the City has changed the intent of the ordinance without the council approval," said Josh Priou, Director of Product Development at Lake Tahoe Accommodations and a member of SLTVRA, South Lake Tahoe Vacation Rental Alliance.

Meyers family trapped when tree falls and splits roof during blizzard
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/12/2017 - 5:38pmDuring the height of Tuesday's blizzard, Lake Valley Fire (LVF) crews responded to home in Meyers where a tree had fallen and crashed through the roof, pinning one person against a window.
A Sokolov family of three, Paul, Jamie and Alyssa, lived in the home which suffered major damage as the mature tree went through the roof, through bedrooms and to the garage. Jamie was pinned, but LVF was able to quickly extricate her, the rest of the family and their pets.
Miraculously, all were unharmed.
SLT Fire Rescue responds to house fire and 34 other calls in 24 hours
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/11/2017 - 5:31pmSouth Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has had a very busy week, from battling flooded streets, homes, businesses, downed power lines, fallen trees, stuck cars, collisions and even a house fire.
South Lake Tahoe has just two fire engine companies, so 35 calls in one day would keep a department three times as big very busy.

The National Weather Service says the storm is the biggest to hit the region in six years.
All Tahoe area schools are closed Wednesday

Lake Tahoe Unified schools are closed. Only essential staff members at the District Office and Snow Removal / Maintenance staff should report to work. All other staff are asked to please stay at home.
Both Whittell High School and Zephyr Cove Elementary School are closed today. All other Douglas County Schools are open.
All Tahoe Truckee schools and offices will be closed. There will be NO morning snow phone calls on Wednesday.
Liberty Utilities closing offices and call center due to storm

There are approximately 2,000 customers still without power, crews are still trying to make repairs although they are hampered by unsafe conditions including avalanche danger.

Truckee River nearing flood stage as torrential rains hit South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 7:20pmEmergency crews have been busy all day, responding to homes, businesses and roads flooding. The number of calls haven't been accumulated yet, but those listening to police and sheriff scanner feeds know it must be dozens if not, hundreds.
The Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe is at 11.26 feet as of 7:00 p.m. Sunday. 11.50 feet is considered major flooding with 12.5 feet at the disastrous level.
Flooding closing South Lake Tahoe area roads
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/08/2017 - 11:31amSouth Lake Tahoe, Calif. - El Dorado County has closed Lake Tahoe Blvd at Sawmill Pond due to flooding just before 11:00 a.m. It is closed in both directions according to the California Highway Patrol with over two feet of water on the roadway. They are expecting the flooding to spread in the area.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department is assisting with signage going up to warn travelers.
12:52 p.m. Sunday update - Highway 50 at Sierra at Tahoe Blvd is experiencing flooding. Reports of high water at Apache Drive in Meyers by the Post Office, and Lake Tahoe Blvd around Angora Creek.

Family pets killed in early morning fire in Round Hill that displaces residents
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/01/2017 - 9:27am1/1/17 update 3:20 p.m. - A local restaurant manager has been identified as one of the victims in the South Lake Tahoe New Year's fire that destroyed both sides of Round Hill duplex.
Joanna Janowicz, manager of Casey's, an American Cantina at the Round Hill mall, her five-year-old son and boyfriend were out to dinner when fire broke out in their home, destroying all of their belongings and killing their three pets.
Broken water pipes could continue to be an issue with upcoming cold weather
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2016 - 5:12pmThe forecast for South Lake Tahoe over the next seven days calls for cold temperatures, winds and several inches of snow, a recipe for an increased risk of broken pipes in homes and businesses in the area.
Last week, both a private home on Saddle Road and the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe suffered through broken pipes, a scene that the SLT Fire Rescue Department sees about two dozen times a year. Over the last seven years, SLTFR has responded to 168 calls for broken water pipes. Local plumbers have responded to hundreds of others as well.
Law enforcement prepares for thousands of revelers at Stateline
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/28/2016 - 5:10pmLaw enforcement is preparing for the annual New Year's Eve party held at Stateline, an outdoor that at one time saw 50,000 people in the streets.
Though Highway 50 through Stateline hasn't had to close until just before midnight the past two years, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is prepared to close it to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.

International Magician of the Year heading to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/16/2016 - 12:09amRob Lake has performed his illusion shows all over the world, and now he'll be bringing his show over the holidays to the South Shore Room at Harrah's Tahoe from December 22 to January 7.
The 33-year-old Norman, Oklahoma native told South Tahoe Now he's never been to Lake Tahoe before.
"I'm really, really exited," said Lake.
Lake caught the magic bug as a 10-year-old when he saw a magic show with his family. "I knew immediately then and there I was going to be a magician," he said. Lake said most of his training comes from the school and public libraries.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/12/2016 - 8:12amThe National Weather Service in Reno has cancelled the winter storm watch for Reno, Carson City and the Carson Valley, but South Lake Tahoe will still see the affects of the storm. There is a delay in the storm's arrival and snow should start to fall late Tuesday morning and last through late Tuesday evening.
Snow may be heavy at times. The winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe is in effect from 10 a.m. December 13 to 4:00 a.m. December 14.

Placer County gets $1 million grant to address homelessness
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/08/2016 - 9:01pmThe Placer County Board of Supervisors approved a grant agreement at their meeting this week, paving the way for $1 million from Sutter Health to come into the community to help house the chronically homeless.
The county will use the money to purchase housing units for participants in Placer County’s Whole Person Care Pilot program which coordinates physical health, behavioral health and social services for the homeless and others with poor health outcomes. Those in the program will receive rental subsidies and supportive services through the grant funding.

Caltrops on South Shore roads causing dozens of flat tires
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/07/2016 - 12:52amSouth Lake Tahoe local Monika Taboada was picking her daughter up from the training room at South Tahoe High on Sunday when she received a flat on one of her new snow tires, leaving her the victim of another "Ninja Road Star" being left on roads around town.
Over the past several months there have been dozens of stories just like Taboada's.

This Act provides $415 million in funding and reauthorizes important Lake Tahoe restoration activities that began in 1997 and refocuses federal, state and local efforts toward reducing wildfire threats, improving water quality and clarity, and combating invasive species. All of these are important to the local economy at one of the most visited lakes in the world.

Between November 12, 2016 and November 29, 2016, the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received calls from the Sun Valley area, including reports of mass murder, shoot-outs in the street, and a bomb threat to a local elementary school.

Douglas County SAR trains with Care Flight
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/25/2016 - 8:23amThe team of highly skilled volunteers that make up the Douglas County Search and Rescue (DCSAR) team recently had a training day that included a segment with Care Flight.
They trained on several different topics and search functions including emergency locater transmitter (ELT) search, dealing with multi-casualty patients from a mock vehicle roll over, patient packaging and loading of a patient onto Care Flight.
The segment from Care Flight personnel also gave instruction on the safety aspects of working with helicopters in their search and rescue operation.

Parking lots are the most dangerous places to be during the holidays
Submitted by admin on Mon, 11/21/2016 - 7:48pmOne would think a car filled, bumper-to-bumper highway would be the most dangerous place for drivers to be during the holiday season, but no, crowded parking lots lead the list.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) has warned there are increased hazards of parking lot traffic during the holidays. Nationwide there are over 50,000 accidents in parking lots and garages resulting in 60,000 injuries and over 500 deaths. In fact. almost 20 percent of all accidents involving vehicles taking place where most might think driving 5 mph or less would lead to safer conditions.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/15/2016 - 3:18pmThere are multiple prescribed fires both in the Eldorado National Forest and around the Lake Tahoe Basin today, but it is one of those that had residents worried and resulted in phone calls into local fire departments and the Forest Service.
This week, 119 acres are being burned by Owens Camp, near Silver Fork and the American River west of South Lake Tahoe, and the winds associated with a front moving into the Lake Tahoe Basin Tuesday resulted in visible smoke that could be seen around the lake.

NHP launches distracted driver campaign: U Drive, U Text, U Pay
Submitted by admin on Wed, 11/02/2016 - 6:29pmA joint law enforcement campaign in Nevada will be focusing on distracted drivers on the state's roads from November 2 to 13 in an attempt to reduce deaths caused by drivers who are texting or making phone calls while behind the wheel.
In the first half of 2016, traffic deaths in the country rose 10.4 percent over 2015, meaning 1,665 more deaths in just six months. That follows a 7 percent increase in deaths the prior year.
What Denver DA wants Californians to know about legalizing marijuana
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/31/2016 - 6:56pmAs voters in California prepare to vote either for or against Proposition 64, the legalization of marijuana, the District Attorney of Denver has written a letter warning against "yes" votes, and shares what they learned as a state since legalizing the recreational use of the drug.
Mitchell R. Morrissey said the promises made in the proposition are "lies."
