Impressive Lake Tahoe rain and snow totals

The Storm of 2017 is preparing to make its way out of the Lake Tahoe basin, but not before it deposits more snow on the ground as residents work on digging out their homes and cars from feet of snow.

The National Weather Service says the storm is the biggest to hit the region in six years.

Ski resorts are reporting epic amount of snow. Heavenly Mountain Resort received 24" of snow overnight, with a total of 144" in the last seven days. Sierra-at-Tahoe reports 34" of snow last night, with a total storm total of 73" at the summit and 53" at the base. Kirkwood is posting 48" overnight, bringing their week total of new snow to 133".

Prior to the snow, South Lake Tahoe received 5.13" of rain.

There is still more snow to come before a mostly sunny holiday weekend.

Wednesday's forecast calls for another 4-8" of snow at lake level with temperatures from 19 to 36. It will be breezy during the day with a southwest wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Evening winds will drop to 10 mph.

On Thursday, expect snow, mainly before 4:00 p.m. according to the National Weather Service. High will be 29, low 18. Snow accumulations on Thursday of 2-4". Northeast wind around 5 mph.

Wednesday morning review of roads around the Lake Tahoe basin:

Highway 50 over Echo Summit is open with chains or traction devices required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels from Meyers to Sand Flat.
I-80 remains closed this morning from the Nevada state line to Colfax.
SR-267 between Kings Beach has re-opened with maximum tire chains. No ladder cables allowed.
SR-89 north around Emerald Bay remains closed.
SR-89 near Tahoe City is closed from Blackwood Creek Road to Elizabeth Drive due to a downed tree and powerlines.
SR-89 has chains or traction devices required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded required from Pickett's Junction to Luther Pass.
SR-88 Closed from Hamm's station to Pickett's Junction. Chains or traction devices required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires from 3.5 miles east of Woodfords to Dew Drop.
SR-207 (Kingsbury Grade) is closed in both directions between Foothill and Tramway due to a sinkhole. It is open on the lake side with chains or snow tires required.
