Emotional well-being topic of next Tahoe Chamber Level Up workshop

Even before the pandemic hit, American businesses were losing 300 billion dollars a year as a result of workplace stress. A recent nationwide survey shows 90 percent of U.S. adults are experiencing emotional distress.

To give employers needed information, the Tahoe Chamber is hosting another installment of its Level Up Webinars on Wednesday, December 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for Chamber members and $20 for non-members.

Change in store for Lake Tahoe Unified School District Trustees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will have a change December 15 with a changing of the guard on the Area 4
seat. Trustee Troy Matthews decided to not run for reelection so he could spend more time with his family which includes a new baby girl.

Daily and special railbike tours featured through fall on V&T Railroad

Many have experienced the trip aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive from Carson City to Virginia City, or the annual Polar Express train rides, but with COVID-19 closures these experiences have not been available for 2020.

Now people can pedal their way through history aboard a Freedom Railbike along the historic Virginia & Truckee (V&T) train route into the Carson River Canyon along an exciting, curved, and gradual two percent grade track system to the historic Eureka Mill rest area.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awards 19 scholarships

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded scholarships to a group of local students from South Tahoe High, George Whittell High, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy and Lake Tahoe Community College. The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.

SROs on campus in South Lake Tahoe: More than a police officer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - School Resource Officers, or SROs, have been a recent topic of conversations in the community with some residents questioning the need for an armed officer on South Lake Tahoe campuses.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - If you've been able to catch the coverage of the 31st American Century Championship from Lake Tahoe you may have seen the shoes Steph Curry has been wearing.

On Friday, his shoes showed an image of Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old African-American emergency medical technician who was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers on March 13, 2020.

Curry, who has been outspoken and active with social injustice matters, said the shoes were to "shine a light on Breonna Taylor, demanding and praying and
wishing for justice for her and her family."

Tax-Aide sites will not reopen due to safety concerns

South Lake Tahoe ski instructor and coach indicted on child pornography charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe man arrested in April on child pornography charges was indicted today by a federal grand jury.

Timothy Daniel Mackey, 39, was arrested at his home after a search warrant served on April 15, 2020. Since that time he has been in jail. If convicted, Mackey faces 5-20 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.

Tahoe Chamber endorses three candidates for Douglas County commissioner

STATELINE, Nev. - Three candidates for the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners have been endorsed by the Tahoe Chamber Board of Directors: Larry Walsh, Nathan Tolbert, and Danny Tarkanian.

Walsh is seeking reelection for District 3, Tolbert is a candidate for the open District 5 seat, and Tarkanian is running for election against incumbent Commissioner Dave Nelson in District 1.

Douglas County school board selects their HR director as next superintendent

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School District has hired a new superintendent to replace the retiring Teri White.

In a unanimous decision, the board voted 7-0 to hire Keith Lewis as the next superintendent. Lewis is the District's current Human Resources executive director. He will start to transition into the position immediately and officially take over when White leaves, sometime this summer.

South Lake Tahoe coach facing federal child pornography charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A search warrant served at a South Lake Tahoe home on April 15, 2020, has resulted in the arrest of a local 39-year-old snowboard and soccer coach on alleged child pornography charges.

Timothy Daniel Mackey was arrested without incident by the FBI and U.S. Marshals at his home during the search.

Love of dance helping South Lake Tahoe youth cope with coronavirus seclusion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students enrolled at Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio in South Lake Tahoe cannot attend classes in person due to coronavirus restrictions, but they are still enjoying their love of dance with online dance classes.

Marcia Sarosik, better known as Ms. Marcia, has been teaching dance in the community for 41 years and this is the first time she's had to close the studio for an extended period. One of her former students, Chelsea Wightman, created a program for dancers to log onto to stay connected to the studio on James Avenue.

New Lake Tahoe Unified School District superintendent is Whittell High graduate

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. Todd Cutler has been announced as the new superintendent for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). During their closed session meeting Saturday, the Board of Trustees decided to reveal their announcement ahead of the previously announced March 10 date. His contract has now been finalized and he will start work at the end of the school year.

Birth Announcement: First Baby of the Year 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It took almost a full week of the new year to welcome in the first baby born at Barton Memorial Hospital. Everett James Haen came into the world at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7.

Everett was born at the hospital's Family Birthing Center to Robert Haen and Shaina Willen, MD. He weighed six pounds 15 ounces and measured 19.5 inches long.

Long time locals are the parents of first baby born in 2020 in South Lake Tahoe

5th annual Dance Team For A Day for grades 1-8

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 5th annual Dance Team For A Day will be held on Friday, January 10 starting at 4:00 p.m. It is open for students in grades 1-8.

This fun event gives the younger kids a chance to learn what it's like to be a member of the South Tahoe High Dance Team. Participants will learn a routine and then perform it during halftime of the South Tahoe High varsity basketball game.

The cost is $40 and is a fundraiser for the Dance Team. This price includes a meal and a special performance T-Shirt.

Purchase of one electric bus, four diesel buses on LTUSD agenda Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Timing seems perfect to have a fleet of electric buses for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD), but trustees have the purchase of just one on their Friday night agenda along with the purchase of four diesel buses.

The Board's annual organizational meeting is set for December 13 at 5:00 p.m. instead of their normal Tuesday meeting. During the meeting, they will elect a new board president and clerk, and elect representatives to El Dorado County School Boards Association and Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, and assign annual duties for the trustees.

South Tahoe High School teacher arrested on sexual misconduct charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Tahoe High School (STHS) woodshop teacher has been arrested for misdemeanor sexual misconduct.

Nathan Crnich, 39, was arrested Thursday morning for alleged sexual advances on multiple students and is currently in the El Dorado County Jail on $150,000 bail.

New officer sworn in for South Lake Tahoe Police Department

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 2008 Douglas High School graduate is the newest member of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

Ryan Brown was sworn in by SLTPD Chief Brian Uhler in front of family, fellow officers, members of the SLT Fire Department and other staff members on Monday afternoon. He comes from the Alpine County Sheriff's Office where he spent four years as a deputy. Ryan has also been with the Nevada Air National Guard for six years.

Jason Collin appointed next South Lake Tahoe mayor, Tamara Wallace as mayor pro tem

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Each year the South Lake Tahoe City Council chooses who is mayor and who is mayor pro tem during the upcoming twelve months. A wrench was thrown into that format by Councilman Cody Bass who asked that each mayoral term be just nine months so that all of the councilmembers could have a turn at the ceremonial position during their tenure.

Women's Soccer Team at LTCC ranked #1 in national coach's poll

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2018 the Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team made an impression on coaches around the country and they became the #2 ranked Division III team during the season. Their epic season took them to the state finals.

Fast forward to this year and the 2019 Lady Coyotes made it to the number one on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III this week. Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1.

South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13 All Stars knocked out of regional playoffs

The South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13 All-Stars were defeated Wednesday, ending their bid for the World Series. They lost their final game to the team from Carbon, Utah 11-4.

The boys played some great games to get to the regional level and met up against some tough opponents. The following boys played a tough tournament and had a great experience of playing the best teams in Babe Ruth Baseball while representing South Lake Tahoe and Nevada.

Back-to-back American Century Championship wins for Tony Romo in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Tony Romo is the champ once again in the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, becoming the fourth player to successfully defend their title at the celebrity tournament.

The former Dallas Cowboy quarterback and current CBS analyst ended the tournament with a 71 in the modified Stableford scoring system. Romo topped three-time winner Mark Mulder by ten points and third place finisher Mardy Fish by 14.

Romo entered the final round with a nine-point lead and says he felt really good about his game, especially as he started the back nine.

Thursday pairings for the American Century Celebrity-Am tournament

The crowds were starting to grow over at Edgewood on Wednesday. More celebrities arrived and the golf range and putting green were filling up as the 91 players in the tournament started to warm up in preparation for the Fri-Sun American Century Championship.

Wednesday was also the Harrah's Celebrity-Am tournament. Next up is Thursday's Celebrity-Am.

South Lake Tahoe native to sing anthem at S.F. Giants game on Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those attending League to Save Lake Tahoe night at the San Francisco Giants game Saturday will have a special treat, even before the first pitch is thrown.

20-year-old Aurora Gooch from South Lake Tahoe will open the game by singing the national anthem.

Many in town already know of the talented Aurora through her starring roles on the South Tahoe High Theatre stage, by hearing her sing at the school's football and basketball games, and years of Miss Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio recitals.

South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe: "It’s a great event, it's in the wrong location"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted Tuesday to give SnowGlobe a new five-year contract with the criteria that organizers must be working on locating a new location for the event at the end of two years.

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

South Tahoe High athletes celebrate community college sports commitments

Nine will be playing baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball at community colleges across the state while another three are playing hockey at the next level.

This week at South Tahoe High School, the cold weather continued while students dressed up for “Versus Week,” seniors visited Lake Tahoe Community College day, and athletes brought home gold from the state championships.

The spirit week theme was “Versus.” Students dressed up as nerds versus athletes, tourists vs. locals, rappers vs. country musicians, and more. A spirit rally is being held Friday to support the school’s canned food drive.

WNC offers 8-week course on stress and pain reduction

An eight-week course at Carson City's Western Nevada College campus will help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in life.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is starting March 26 and will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365.

South Tahoe High's Kody Griffis signs to play football in South Dakota

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "We are super proud of you," South Tahoe High Football Coach Louis Franklin told Kody Griffis on Thursday as he signed his letter to play next year for the Presentation College Saints.

Surrounded by family, friends and teammates, Kody said he is looking forward to heading to South Dakota this summer to start college and playing at the next level.

"Thank you to all the coaches, especially Petties and Franklin," said Kody. "And to Goldberg for helping me physically and mentally."

John Thiel: New man at the helm of South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Richard Solbrig told the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors he was retiring in January 2019 after 29 years with the agency the hunt was on for a new general manager.

It turned out they didn't have to look far.

John Thiel had been hired by Solbrig in 1992 as a staff engineer and he worked his way up through the ranks over the last 27 years until the Board chose him as the new general manager.

We All Wear Many Hats
My life has been a series of hats, labels, and roles. I have been a babysitter, library volunteer, dishwasher, waitress, security guard, bartender, teacher, flower delivery girl, nanny, counselor, and coach. I have played the roles of daughter, sister, friend, wife, colleague, employee, and boss. All of these are just labels that make what I am doing at the moment a bit easier to explain. Ultimately, there is just one word to describe me and that is: Self.

The school's Alpine Ski Team is showing the film as their annual movie night fundraiser. Tickets are $15 and available from any ski team member, Coach Ms. Bedwell, or at the door. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. There will be a silent auction, door prizes, and snacks available for purchase. All profits raised go to purchase uniforms and equipment for the ski team.

One late goal ends up being difference between LTCC and state championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was so close!

2018 was a storied and undefeated regular season for the Lake Tahoe Community College women's soccer team. It was a year of many firsts.

The Coyotes were ranked number two at one point according to the United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division III women’s soccer national poll. They find out today when the next national poll results are released where they ended up nationally for the season.
