Daniel Robert Rix, Tahoe Douglas Rotarian

Dan Rix, affectionately known as “Papa Dan” to his family, passed away peacefully at his home in South Lake Tahoe on February 11, 2015 at the age of 73 after a brave and courageous battle with a long illness. Dan was born December 30, 1941 in Pueblo, CO to Dorothy Mae and George Robert Rix and spent his childhood growing up in Daly City (CA). He eventually moved to Tulare (CA) with his family where he graduated from Tulare Union HS in 1959.

South Tahoe baseball program fundraising for new scoreboard

There has been a lot of work completed on the baseball fields in South Lake Tahoe, including a new diamond for local little league teams. One needed item wasn't on the list of projects completed with Measure S funds was replacing the old and broken scoreboard so a fundraising effort has begun to replace it.

South Tahoe High varsity baseball coach Starbuck Teevan started a GoFundMe page in order to help with the $18,500 needed for a new scoreboard.

Babe Ruth 2015 Registration

It is now time to sign up to play in the 2015 Babe Ruth season in South Lake Tahoe.

The next sign updates will be on January 21 and 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kahle Community Center, February 5 and 25 at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then again at the Ice Arena at the same time on March 5.

Tryouts will then be held on Sunday March 22 and 29 at 10 a.m.

The Babe Ruth League is expecting a six team with with 12 players on each team. Joining the players on each roster will be a Manager, Coach and Assistant Coach (a Varsity Player).

Fundraiser: Join South Tahoe High Dance Team for a Day

What a great opportunity for young people in South Lake Tahoe! All kids in 2nd grade through 8th grade are invited to participate in the first ever STHS Dance Team camp on Saturday, January 24. After spending the day learning routines from the varsity Dance Team, attendees will be performing during a halftime show during the Viking varsity basketball against rival Truckee High.

Camp will start at 10 a.m. All participants will get a performance t-shirt and lunch. The cost is $35 per dancer. All proceeds go to support the Dance Team.

South Tahoe High Vikings get fourth straight win against Fernley

South Tahoe High's varsity boys basketball team has been racking up the wins over the last eight days, coming away with victories in the last four games.

Coach Joby Cefaul's Vikings beat Fernley on Saturday, January 10 by a score of 80-68. They started their winning streak on Saturday, January 3 when they beat Spring Creek 65-38, followed by Tuesday's win over Dayton (63-48) and Thursday's 68-58 win over Union Mine of Placerville.

U.S. Ski Team prospects die in Austrian avalanche

Steve Berlack built a life around snow and skiing. He lived in Franconia, N.H. He taught at an exclusive ski academy – Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont.

His son, Ronnie, rose up the ski racing ranks, graduated from Burke, had recently made the U.S. "D" team and was still hoping to make it to the World Cup level within a few years.

But snow and skiing took Ronnie's life Monday.

Ronnie Berlack, 20, and another U.S. ski team developmental athlete, Bryce Astle, 19, of Sandy, Utah, were killed in an avalanche in Soelden, Austria.

Whittell High's Phil Bryant celebrates 705 coaching victories

It's not everyday that you see a high school coach reach the milestone of 700 coaching victories, but Whittell High School's Phil Bryant has done just that. The dual varsity basketball and football coach, Bryant led his basketball team to a win on December 11, making it the 700th time teams he was coaching had a victory.

Since that date, the Warriors have posted wins against Mammoth 72-44, Lee Vining 75-37, Loyalton 74-47, Pyramid Lake 50-46 and Coleville 73-22, bringing Bryant's victory count up to 705.

Impressive inaugural season for LTCC soccer teams; State playoffs for both

The LTCC men's soccer team holds the top spot in the Golden Valley Conference with a 7-0-1 league record and an overall 13-4-3 record in their inaugural season. They will take their five game winning streak into the post-season on Saturday as they try to make their way to a state title.

The team is currently ranked #9 among the community colleges in California, #13 nationally.

South Tahoe High's girls soccer team headed to state tourney

One week after the Whittell High girls brought home the state soccer trophy for division III schools, the girls from South Tahoe High are headed to the state tournament for division 1-A. They are entering the tournament as the number two seed from the North after losing to Truckee in the Regional Playoffs.

Whittell High's girls soccer team goes for state title on Saturday

The Lady Warriors of Whittell High School played the first round of the State Soccer Championships just as they had the regular season, with dominance.

With a league leading record of 14-0 (and overall 17-1), the Whittell girls breezed into the final game by beating White Pine 5-0.

In the other playoff game at Whittell on Friday, Incline High beat North Tahoe with a score of 5 to 4.

The Warriors girls team will play Incline at noon on Saturday at Whittell High.

First woman to swim across Lake Tahoe at age 16, Erline Christopherson, tells her story tonight at library

In 1962, Erline Christopherson was a 16 year old from Lodi, CA who was living her dream of swimming across Lake Tahoe. In 2014, 52 years later, Erline has returned to the site where she set a world record as the first woman to swim across the lake.

She will be sharing her story at the South Lake Tahoe library Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.

Former NFL MVP Joe Theismann took home top honors after he popped the cork on a bottle of Korbel and his cork traveled the furthest distance - 87ft.

Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic Brings Out the Stars July 13-14

NFL Hall of Fame members Marcus Allen and Mike Haynes will join Cy Young winner Vida Blue and other sports stars at the 6th Annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at Gray's Crossing in Truckee July 13 to 14.

The tournament is held to pay tribute to Hall of Famer and former Oakland Raider and Lake Tahoe resident Gene Upshaw and raise funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injuries. Upshaw golfed often at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe before his sudden death from pancreatic cancer in 2008, just 3 days after being diagnosed.

South Tahoe Vikings Host Division 1a Playoffs This Week

For the first time in 20 years, the South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team has made it to the Nevada State Playoffs. This is only the second time in school history for the team to make it to the post season, and the last time was in 1994, when current Viking coach Starbuck Teevan was a junior on the team.

They join Elko, Churchill County and Spring Creek in this weekend's Division 1a playoffs to be held Friday and Saturday at South Lake Tahoe's Todd Fields.

South Lake Tahoe Community Comes Through For Ryan Wallace; Receives New Leg Next Week

Just one month ago the plea was made to the South Lake Tahoe community: Help Ryan Wallace raise $25,000 to replace his prosthetic leg.

As of today, the goal was met with the final boost made by the students at South Tahoe Middle School where Wallace was Wrestling Coach and Instructional Aide. "A Minute to Win It For Ryan" was presented to the kids as a way to help their mentor.

Whittell High School's Boys Basketball Team Wins Nevada State Title

The boys basketball team from Whittell High School claimed the Division IV Nevada State Title on Saturday night by beating Virginia City by a score of 53-48.

The Warriors beat Spring Mountain on Friday in a close game by the score of 53-50, getting them into the final round for their 4th game of the year against Virginia City.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

Sometimes surprises come at the right time. Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. LTCC Graduation to Celebrate Student Achievement, Bond With Community

Tahoe SnowFlakes figure skaters head to Anaheim competition after 2nd place showing

The 'Tahoe Snowflakes' are South Shore's first synchronized figure skating team. On June 16, 2013, they took second place at the ISI competition held at the South Tahoe Ice Arena. This was their first competition. They are now headed to the ISI Worlds held in Anaheim, Calif. They will compete on July, 27, 2013.

Bluethman leaves life-changing legacy

If anyone out there is thinking about crying, don’t. Kathy Bluethman would prefer a smile.

“Anyone who is mourning Kathy doesn’t get it,” Bluethman’s longtime friend and local coach Dan McLaughlin said. “Who’d be the most upset? Don’t mourn. Celebrate the fact that we got to spend time with probably the most remarkable person we will ever meet.”
