Working to protect our shoreline and enhance recreation access

Millions of people visit our region each year, and the shoreline is where most of them go to enjoy the beauty and the cold, famously clear water of Lake Tahoe.

The shoreline is also where a challenging mix of planning issues converge: Protecting the environment and our lake’s awe-inspiring scenery, managing recreation access, and respecting private property rights.

Importance of understanding dangers of cold water shock

The most common misunderstanding about swimming in Lake Tahoe is that people can suffer from hypothermia, which leads to death. The real truth is that "cold water shock" will kill much quicker than hypothermia ever will.

Deaths in Lake Tahoe attributed to cold water shock, not hypothermia

"Swim Smart, Swim Safe: know the dangers of cold water" is the message coming from agencies responsible for boating and water safety on Lake Tahoe, especially after the recent deaths in the lake of two healthy men.

Drowning incidents from boating, paddling and swimming often share the same cause, "cold water shock," an involuntary gasp reflex caused by sudden immersion in cold water. Swimmers and boaters suddenly exposed to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe may experience rapid breathing, gasping, fainting, muscle failure and immediate risk of drowning.

Officer hanging up her shield after 29 years with SLTPD

What does a police officer do after they retire?

Hunt for Bigfoot, of course.

That is what South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Donna Kingman said she'll be doing after hanging up her shield after 29 years of working in the community. Her official last day is April 30, but Thursday was her last shift working in uniform.

Of course, she won't be hunting for Bigfoot in cold, shaded areas as she'll be seeking sun and a life of being "footloose and fancy free."

Kudos: Tahoe Warm Room thanks cleanup volunteers

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank the many community members and volunteers who helped in the cleanup and closing of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room in early April. The Warm Room was open from December 18 through April 1 and provided the first overnight homeless services in the Tahoe Region.

Fast moving storm to bring rain and snow to Lake Tahoe; back in 60s by Sunday

A relatively weak Spring storm is headed to Lake Tahoe, bringing with it modest rain and snow amounts as it moves through the Sierra and western Nevada on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow levels will be down to around 4500 - 5500 feet. Although it will be cold enough for widespread snow showers, there won't be much in the way of snow totals with this storm though the West Slope should see more than the Lake Tahoe Basin and Reno. On Wednesday, the NWS in Sacramento forecast 4"-8" for the higher elevations.

Kudos: Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless thankful for community support of Inaugural Warm Room

New storm headed to Lake Tahoe: One foot of snow possible at lake level

Could this be a "Miracle March?" With almost two feet of new snow added to ski resorts last weekend, and another two feet expected this weekend, signs are pointing to getting well above average on the Sierra snowpack totals. The precipitation is there, but all depends on the temperature.

The National Weather Service in Reno today said, "Higher confidence this afternoon with potent winter storm expected to arrive Saturday with rain, snow and wind this weekend into Monday morning."

Active weather pattern heading toward Lake Tahoe and the Sierra

After a month of temperatures close to record breaking and very little precipitation, South Lake Tahoe will see a series of storms heading to the Sierra starting Thursday, March 3.

The active weather pattern actually begins this weekend as a series of moderate to strong atmospheric river type storms impact the Sierra this weekend and into next week, according to the National Weather Service.

There is a 30 percent chance of rain on Thursday and Thursday evening which would be mostly in the form of rain due to a high of 52 degrees and a low of 32.

Long awaited storm due to hit Lake Tahoe this weekend

A fairly dry February didn't add much needed water to the Sierra snowpack, but a storm system heading to the Lake Tahoe this weekend may help make up the deficit.

Low pressure will brush by the region and produce gusty winds on Tuesday afternoon and evening. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake on Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Southwest winds from 15-25 mph are expected with gusts up to 40 mph.

Break in mild weather this week in South Lake Tahoe

After an extended mild and dry period, winter is going to make a brief reappearance this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin. A quick moving storm will pass through Lake Tahoe Wednesday and Thursday. Exact snow amounts are uncertain due to the warm air ahead of it, and the rapid progression of the storm according to the National Weather Service office in Reno.

Liquid totals in the Sierra look to be 1 to 2 inches.

Snow levels should fall behind the cold front Wednesday night with rapidly deteriorating conditions in the Sierra likely.
