Proposals will be accepted at the Nevada Division of State Parks office until March 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. PST.

Even though smoke detectors have been required in new construction and in homes undergoing a remodel for decades, not all homes have working detectors. They are broken, have a dead battery, or missing completely.
Lake Tahoe Unified School District seeks developer fee increase

They plan to use the increase in revenue to support its program to reconstruct existing facilities, funds that are needed due to rising costs in South Lake Tahoe.

Longtime local Larry Lukins ~ 1944 - 2020
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/24/2020 - 11:44amLarry Lukins passed away on November 25, 2020. He was born February 22, 1944 to Melvin and Hazel Lukins of South Lake Tahoe. Larry was the third generation of Lukins’ raised in South Lake Tahoe.
Larry was always proud of growing up in “old Tahoe” and loved to share stories of the good ole days. As a child growing up in South Lake Tahoe, Larry and his brother Danny spent much of their time working on and building airplanes, cars and boats.

South Shore Transportation Management Association reactivated with new website, new focus

It was formed originally in 1994 after a study was conducted to determine the most effective way to engage the private sector in transportation on the South Shore. Over the years its focus moved from the development of the Nifty Fifty trolley system to transportation initiatives and the formation of the Tahoe Transportation District.

Because in-person events have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the department chose this virtual ribbon-cutting event to acknowledge the efforts of its staff, contractor Q&D Construction and the collaboration with local partner agencies in making this challenging project a successful one.

Invasive species removal begins in Taylor Creek Marsh

Community rallies around Reno family who lost home in Pinehaven Fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2020 - 2:49pmTuesday's Pinehaven Fire in the Caughlin Ranch area of Reno burned quickly inside a 1,200 acre perimeter, taking with it five structures and damaging another 15. One of the homes lost belonged to the O'Brien family who lost their second home in 19 months.
The family of four, soon to be five, had recently moved back in after losing it the first time to an electrical fire when it was under construction. Mom Marie "Mimi" O'Brien is 37 weeks pregnant, expecting their third son in just three weeks.

Lane closure in South Lake Tahoe for pilot project as Caltrans paints bike lane green
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/03/2020 - 7:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a lane closure on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe later this week for a pilot project to paint a section of the bike lane green.
The closure is scheduled for the eastbound #2 lane from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday between Dunlap Drive and 3rd Street to apply the paint treatment.
Taylor Creek closure extended by USFS
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/02/2020 - 3:13pmDue to continued public health and safety concerns, trail construction, risk of bear-human encounters and in order to discourage large groups from gathering, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has extended a Forest Order that temporarily closes Taylor Creek and the surrounding area. This order (see here) is extended through November 9 at this time.

US50 over Echo Summit opens five days early
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/27/2020 - 9:36amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 is back open to traffic over Echo Summit five days ahead of schedule, Caltrans announced today.
A full closure of Highway 50 over the summit was implemented Friday, Sept. 18 to install seven precast, prestressed 96-foot bridge girders and associated work that included pouring ultra high-performance concrete to connect the girders, building concrete barrier walls and approach slabs, applying a polyester overlay on the bridge, and asphalt paving approaching both sides of the new structure.
U.S. Highway 50 Echo Summit project ahead of schedule
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/23/2020 - 2:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews working on replacing the 81-year-old bridge on US50 over Echo Summit are ahead of schedule and the road may reopen before the previous opening date of October 2. The ultra high-performance concrete that connects the seven 96-foot girders has cured and the bridge is at strength.
Wednesday morning the inside concrete barrier rail was poured and the outside concrete barrier rail is planned to be poured on Thursday. Asphalt paving on the approaches to the bridge is planned to start this Sunday.

Chris Sneed was working in Incline Village on a pipe replacement project for Granite Construction on Lakeshore Boulevard on 9-11-01. He needed a part and ran into Spitsen Lumber. He was in line and saw the store's 12" television showing a plane hit the first tower, and then the second tower.
