Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/06/2020 - 4:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a good start to the Sierra snowpack, big storms have almost been non-existent this winter. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports January 2020 was the fifth warmest on record in the US.
NOAA outlook still leaning toward warmer temperatures and reduced precipitation in the West
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/03/2019 - 9:43pmNOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, released its latest predictions for November and the coming months on October 31. Not much has changed since their report earlier this month.
NOAA - Absence of El Nino and La Nina this winter; Drier and warmer than normal
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/18/2019 - 9:31pmThere are many things that help those living in Lake Tahoe predict what winter will be like: Has the snow in the cross of Mt. Tallac melted? What does the Farmer's Almanac say? Are the squirrels fatter? Is NOAA going to be right in their three-month forecast?
There is no app to give one the perfect insight into what winter has in store and most weather can only be predicted a week out. For generations, people have relied on signs from Mother Nature.
Sierra snowpack at 80% of average
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/03/2019 - 12:15pmPHILLIPS, Calif. - It was a much different picture of the Sierra snowpack today than what there was a year ago when the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted their first monthly measurement of the snow and water content at Phillips Station, ten miles west of Lake Tahoe.
As of January 3, 2019, DWR measured the snow at 25.5 inches deep, which means the Sierra snowpack is 80 percent of normal with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of nine inches. These figures are 36 percent of the April 1 average, the date used as the maximum snowpack that will be received in the mountains.
What does winter have in store for Lake Tahoe and the West?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/19/2018 - 10:10pmWith the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center report released Thursday, it looks like Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada will be warmer than average and experience an average precipitation year.
A mild winter could be in store for much of the United States this winter according to the report. In the U.S. Winter Outlook for December through February, above-average temperatures are most likely across the northern and western U.S., Alaska and Hawaii.
Additionally, a weak El Nino has a 70 to 75 percent chance of developing.
Recovery from snowpack drought to take at least four years
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/21/2016 - 8:13pmEven though the winter of 2016 brought a strong El Nino, it wasn't enough to recover from the previous years' dismal snowpacks.
In a report released by a team of researchers led by UCLA, the snow water equivalent (SWE) seen in 2015, when added to the previous three years of drought, was the worst seen in 1,200 years.
Since the SWE in the Sierra snowpack directly affects the state, the scientists also said that, even if the Sierra has average snowpacks, it will take
California until at least 2019 to recover.
Latest storm adds needed water to Lake Tahoe and California
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/23/2016 - 7:56amThe latest storms to hit the Sierra and Lake Tahoe kept wter content in the snowpack close to average, with some areas of California going above average in the precipitation they've received.
Officials from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) will be making their last monthly snowpack measurement near Sierra-at-Tahoe next week, but electronic readings taken March 22, 2016 show the snowpack is at 92 percent of average.
Most of the ski resorts around the lake, while still below average snowpack, are experiencing the best measured snow in a few years.

Despite snow, Tahoe’s climate still changing
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/14/2016 - 12:38pmThe New Year is getting off to a phenomenal start with snow falling at Lake Tahoe. It seems long ago since we’ve had snow around the lake, but as California and Nevada continue to grapple with four years of drought and water shortages, the snow couldn’t be falling at a better time.
El Nino making snow now, but climate change 'loads dice' for warmer future winters
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/08/2016 - 8:36pmhe El Niño weather pattern that's fueling a snowy start to 2016 for the Lake Tahoe region is among the strongest on record and likely to continue bringing storms to the region.
But the long-term climate prognosis for the Sierra Nevada and the planet as a whole is more troubling with rising global temperatures threatening to make cold, snowy winters less likely in the future.
That was the message two climate scientists delivered Friday to an audience of meteorologists gathered for a conference at Lake Tahoe.
Sierra snowpack at an encouraging 136% of average
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/30/2015 - 2:18pmThe first snowpack survey of the season was taken Wednesday in Phillips, showing the snowpack us at 136% of average with a water content of 16.3 inches.
"This is encouraging but not where we'd like to be," said Frank Gehkre, the Chief Snow Surveyor for the California Department of Water Resources. "This is clearly much better than last year at this time."
One year ago the survey showed the snowpack at 47% of average.

Forecast: Lake Tahoe shouldn't expect benefit of a strong El Niño
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/15/2015 - 10:14pmA strong El Niño is predicted to help ease drought conditions in some, but not all of California. The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) released their latest seasonal weather assessment on Thursday, and news isn't very good for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/05/2015 - 9:52pmSnow blanketed the highest runs at Heavenly Mountain Resort over the weekend, exciting the inner skier in many. Could this be a sign of what El Nino has in store for Lake Tahoe this year?
While experts have differing opinions, the ski resorts are betting on a big snow year as they wrap up their season pass sales.

El Nino looking better and better for upcoming winter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/10/2015 - 9:16pmGot your fingers crossed for a wet, white winter ahead?
The chances have just improved even more. Updated federal government forecasts Thursday raised the likelihood to near certainty for an El Nino event noted for bringing stormy winters in the past as witnessed in the historically strong El Nino winters of 1982-83 and 1997-98.
"Godzilla" El Nino may be on it's way
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2015 - 6:10pmExperts warn of a Godzilla El Niño this fall.
So, what exactly is a "Godzilla" El Niño?
Actually, it’s just a clever joke by a NASA climatologist: "This definitely has the potential of being the Godzilla El Niño," Bill Patzert of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, California, said Thursday.
What's It Look Like?
"Godzilla" El Niño is not a technical or scientific term, but it's a good way to describe the upcoming El Niño event, because it could likely be one of the strongest since record-keeping began in 1950.
Is drought over soon? Major El Niño gaining steam
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 6:07amAs Pacific Ocean temperatures continue to warm and trade winds shift, federal scientists now say that the El Niño weather event that’s emerging could be one of the strongest on record.
California drought: Odds of an El Niño rising
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/11/2015 - 10:59pmChances of an El Niño bringing a badly needed wet winter to California have gone up, the National Weather Service said Thursday.
According to scientists, there’s a better than 90 percent chance the weather pattern often associated with plentiful rain will hit in the fall, and an 85 percent chance it will hang around through the end of the year.
Those predictions are up from May, when scientists said an El Niño — which involves the warming of tropical waters in the Pacific — had an 80 percent chance of sticking around into the winter.
Scientists now predicting near 100% chance of strong El Nino
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/23/2015 - 5:09pmClimate experts say El Nino is growing stronger and could bring drought-busting wet weather to California this year. While the ocean condition is nearly guaranteed, rainfall doesn’t always follow the sea temperature increase.
On Thursday, scientists at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) said chances for El Nino this summer are close to 100 percent, with simulations suggesting by December, it could exceed the devastating 1997-1998 event that brought widespread flooding and hurricane-force winds to most of California.
El Nino officially declared for 2015
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/07/2015 - 12:23amJust when everyone had pretty much written it off, the El Niño event that has been nearly a year in the offing finally emerged in February and could last through the spring and summer, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Thursday.
This isn’t the blockbuster, 1998 repeat El Niño many anticipated when the first hints of an impending event emerged about a year ago. This El Niño has just crept across the official threshold, so it won’t be a strong event.
