Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/14/2020 - 3:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a month dedicated to coming together in solidarity with victims and survivors by speaking out on relationship violence to provide education and empowerment.
Domestic violence, and other intimate partner violence, is a pattern of abusive behavior to keep power and control over a partner’s personal life. Abusive partners can use intimidation, threats, force, manipulation or coercion to establish and maintain this control over their partner.
Soroptimists of South Lake Tahoe to fund softball field renovations
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 10/03/2019 - 5:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past decade, the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) club has been allocating a percentage of annual fundraising efforts to a 'Major Project Fund.'
Members wanted to meet a series of developed criteria and ultimately leave a lasting legacy in South Lake Tahoe with that project and considered needs presented by area non-profits. A winner has been selected and members have just voted to give $325,000 to support the Soroptimist Softball Renovation Project.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Elevating Humanity is the theme of the 4th annual TEDx South Lake Tahoe at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theatre on Saturday, October 19, 2019.
The goal of organizers this year is to uplift individuals and spark positivity to make the world a better place. All of the speakers presenting during the evening will use this theme as they inspire attendees.
So far, three speakers have been revealed and over the next few weeks, the other seven will be introduced on the TEDx website, http://tedxsouthlaketahoe.com.
Community raises over $1,000 for SOS Outreach at Tahoe Chamber event

They gathered with community members at Revive Coffee & Wine and enjoyed appetizers, local beer and wine, raffle prizes, and live music from Bond Collins while raising $1,050 for SOS Outreach.

Miss Hooters International contestants help out in South Lake Tahoe before pageant
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/21/2019 - 7:01pmSTATELINE, Nev. - After a week of women’s empowerment seminars, community outreach and preliminary events on the South Shore, Briana Smith from Fort Lauderdale, Florida was crowned Miss Hooters International 2019.
There were 80 Hooters Girls from around the world competing for the title during the 23rd annual pageant. The winner was crowned Thursday night during the Lee Brice concert at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena.
Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour returns to South Lake Tahoe

January 22, 2019 - 7:00pm Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery will be returning to South Lake Tahoe at the end of their two year tour of the United States. During their visit to South Lake Tahoe they will be sharing a variety of presentations, focussing on Green Tara the female Buddha of Compassionate Action. Events will include a Buddhist Philosophy Lecture by Venerable Geshe Wangyal, a Healing Ritual, an Empowerment/Blessing of Green Tara, a Meditation and Tibetan Calligraphy Workshop.

Unity at the Lake believes that every single child is special, that they make a difference and that they have infinite resources within them. Every Sunday Unity offers a youth empowerment program concurrent with their regular Sunday Service.
In keeping with this, they invite all children in the community to a special musical program, facilitated by Jodene Hurt, a local child educator, on Sunday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m.

The community is invited to join the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club for an evening of live music, great food, drinks and friends at the 29th annual Elegant Evening will be held at Harrah's Tahoe on Saturday, April 21, 2018.
The evening's festivities start with a 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. cocktail party and social time, moving to a seated dinner from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and dancing all night with Trey Stone until 10:30 p.m.
Guests will enjoy selective tastings from Crystal Basin Cellars, Tahoe Blue Vodka, Lake Tahoe AleWorx and Double Bond Wine.
Empowerment Retreat for eighth grade girls

This retreat encourages eighth grade girls to explore self-worth, care, leadership and sisterhood, to move forward into freshman year feeling connected with their peers, and strong in their own capabilities. The day is structured with lessons, activities, games, food, and most of all: fun!!
The retreat is FREE for participants.

Letter: Community support will help The Girl's Project

Tahoe Youth and Family Services started “The Girl’s Project” in 2010 with the vision to empower high risk young girls in our community to become more confident and influential women later in life. The Girl’s Project originally began in three of our local elementary schools, Tahoe Valley Elementary, Sierra House Elementary and Bijou Elementary and has now expanded and includes the South Tahoe Middle School.
Zen Garden created in memory of Live Violence Free staff member
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/22/2016 - 7:32amJen Kline, a 15-year-employee with Live Violence Free, passed away suddenly on March 18, 2016 at the age of 46. The unexpected death caught everyone by surprise from family and friends to those she served in Alpine County through her position as the non-profit agency's coordinator.
"We were totally shocked," LVF Executive Director Jane Flavin said of Kline's passing.

Kudos: Teens gain influence of community leaders at empowerment retreats

With the generosity of funding from Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and MacDuff’s Public House, Live Violence Free worked closely with South Tahoe Middle School to engage 7th and 8th grade girls and boys in discovering their true potential for greatness.
South Lake Tahoe teen named Youth of the Year

Along with this role she will also be receiving a Heavenly/Kirkwood/Northstar season pass next winter courtesy of the Vail Epic Promise Program.
Tibetan Monks returning to South Lake Tahoe

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are returning to South Lake Tahoe from April 1 to April 6 with a full schedule of ancient and colorful participatory activities, Dharma talks, meditations, and cultural rituals to promote inner healing.
Events, unless otherwise noted, will be at the Blue Angel Cafe, located at 1132 Ski Run Blvd.
All events are donation based and all proceeds will go towards funding the construction of the Phukhang College House at Gaden Shartse, which houses over 600 exiled monks in the Tibetan Refugee Zone in India.

The Hard Rock Cafe will be hosting two fun evenings that will be full of painting and socializing in the name of childhood hunger.
Paint & Sip at the Hard Rock will benefit WHYHunger.org's "Imagine No Hunger" program. On both November 10 and December 1, participants will learn how to paint a 16' x 20' canvas from a professional artist. All the materials needed will be provided.
The cost is $40 per person. Ticket & select Beer and wine sales will directly benefit WhyHunger. The event starts at 6 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe inside Harvey's.
