On Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Sugar Pine Foundation will co-host a Tahoe yellow cress (TYC) planting with the Tahoe yellow cress Adaptive Management Working Group at Baldwin Beach, which is National Forest System land managed by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). In addition, the LTBMU will host a TYC information booth at the Native Species Festival on June 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center.

People whose passions include building new paths and trails led the way in nominations this year, with improving mountain biking routes, creating new multi-use paths, and advancing pedestrian and bicycle safety among the interests of the award winners.
Bird in South Lake Tahoe tests positive for West Nile Virus
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/22/2018 - 9:15pmThe first El Dorado County case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in South Lake Tahoe. County health officials received confirmation this week that a Stellar Jay found on May 7 has tested positive for the virus.
This bird was the first one for the county in 2018. Besides El Dorado COunty, West Nile virus activity in dead birds has been reported in two other California counties, San Mateo and Santa Clara.
Save a bear - be smart about food storage/trash disposal in the outdoors

Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in the bear being killed, fines and/or jail time for violators. Every year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat and/or are damaging property. In some cases, the animals are euthanized.

US-395 closed near Topaz Lodge after mudslide crosses roadway into hotel

On May 21, 2018 at approximately 6:38 p.m. East Fork Fire Protection District and Douglas County Emergency Management was dispatched to several reports of massive debris flows across US 395 in several locations in and around the Topaz Lodge and on Topaz Park Road.
The Topaz Lodge was occupied with about 200 people who sheltered in place during the event. West 395 and Topaz Park Road were completely impassable. Approximately 20 occupied motor vehicles were impacted on the roadways, with no reported injuries.
Dirk Brazil ready to take on interim city manager role for South Lake Tahoe

Even though he doesn't start officially until next month, Brazil has been in town meeting with various stakeholders and getting to know the city.
He said a lot of things in a city are the same, departments and their functions are similar, but each one has its own issues.
Optimist Club hosts annual Fishing Derby in South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is holding their annual Fishing Derby at Sawmill Pond on June 2 from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
This event is free for all children 14-years-old and younger.
Fishing tackle and bait are available for free, or participants can bring their own. Tahoe Fly Fishing will be on hand with their expert guidance on how to catch the best fish.
There will also be a fishing cleaning table available as well as help in all fishing activities.
Hot dogs, lemonade and chips will be provided.

In a story that has had national attention, the $1,000 fines for violations of parking, noise and other ordinances for each the renter and homeowner have become the spotlight.
Council will look at the fines and rules for parking and bear boxes, and the fact that both renter and homeowners are fined for each instance.
One driver dies in truck crash in Alpine County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/09/2018 - 5:19pmUPDATE 5/10/18 10:30 a.m.: State Route 88 remains closed near Woodfords Thursday morning as crews work to remove the demolished tanker truck involved in Wednesday's fatal crash.
Gregory Brown, 46, of Oakland, California has been identified as the driver, whose body was found at the scene nine hours after the crash.
Emergency personnel responded to the 10:05 a.m. call on May 9, 2018 on State Route 88 near the Caltrans maintenance yard west of Woodfords and the SR-89 junction. Upon arrival they found an overturned tanker and detached cab off the roadway.
Historic Tahoe Trout Farm opens for season

For over 70 years the trout farm has been providing families with the experience of fishing in their ponds and catching their dinner, or lots of dinners, as there is no limit to the number of fish caught.
Lake Tahoe area boat inspection stations opening for 2018 season

The fight against aquatic invasive species (AIS) has gone on for the last ten years, and officials say a large part of their success in keeping the lake clear are the stations located around the lake.
Since 2018, Tahoe Resource Conservation District (RCD) inspectors have performed over 70,000 vessel inspections, decontaminated 32,576 of them using hot water, and have found hundreds of vessels containing foreign species such as mussels, snails and plant material.
Tahoe Wildlife Care: Layton released back into the wild
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/04/2018 - 9:50pmIn the 18 years that Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care have been caring for bear cubs, 96 have passed through their doors. Most of those 96 have wintered at the facility on Cherry Hills Circle, and today, Layton, left his temporary home in South Lake Tahoe and went back Laytonville, Calif., the area he was found in.
Late in the evening on June 23, 2017, Layton arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care after being found alone, full of mites, foxtails, ticks and underweight. He weighed in at 15 pounds and was about four or five months old.
Polystyrene ban in South Lake Tahoe takes effect October 1
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/03/2018 - 11:57amSouth Lake Tahoe joins at least 114 other entities in California in banning polystyrene, a type of plastic manufactured from non-renewable fossil fuels and synthetic chemicals that is not biodegradable and becoming a concern across the country.
Starting October 1, 2018, certain single use expanded polystyrene and plastic products will be banned in the City limits "in order to reduce and prevent the presence of this type of litter in the environment and to promote environmentally sustainable practices."

Bears at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care heading back home soon

Last summer, the nonprofit organization in South Lake Tahoe lost two of their six cubs suddenly to a virus called Canine Adenovirus. This came as a shock to the group who has rehabilitated animals from not only Lake Tahoe, but from around the state since forming forty years ago in 1978.

On opening day they were plenty of anglers enjoying a fair weather day, where it be from shore or from boat. Most anglers were very successful. I had the pleasure of fishing with Mike and Tom Blotter. We were on the lake at 6 a.m. and had lines in the water right at the precise moment of opening day. We covered the lake in a variety of depths.
Kirkwood Resort fined over $750k for dumping asphalt
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/29/2017 - 2:28amKirkwood Mountain Resort has been fined $754,732 after their snow removal practices resulted in asphalt pavement grindings to get into drainages that flow into Kirkwood Creek and Kirkwood Meadows during the winter of 2015-16.
The financial settlement was with the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board over the alleged violations of the federal Clean Water Act, the Board announced on December 28.

But as we all know, that does not mean it will get any warmer soon. Down here in the Minden and Carson Valleys we've experienced an average of 7 to 10 degree mornings.
Most would think that the higher lakes would be frozen and iced over. I received a report from fellow angler Josh Otto last week. As Josh told me, Caples Lake had high winds and was down right cold and had waves blowing across the lake.

Second bird in El Dorado County tests positive for West Nile Virus

The bird found near Garden Valley, an Acorn Woodpecker, was tested on September 29 and county health officials just received confirmation this week it had the virus.
To date there have been 463 dead birds to test positive in 38 counties in California. Nearby Sacramento has had 86 birds and Placer County, three birds.

Hundreds of cities across the country have banned the use of polystyrene (better known as Styrofoam) in their communities. The SLT City Council will be taking a look into banning the substance in the City Limits at their October 17, 2017 meeting.
In 2013, South Lake Tahoe added a ban of single-use plastic bags in grocery stores to the City Code.
New boardwalk at Taylor Creek unveiled

As Kokanee salmon head upstream on the creek, many people walking the trail to watch this annual display of nature would often wander to the creek, many to get a selfie with bears in the area, and some even disrupting the salmon run.

Cash on walls turns into over $3500 to stock fish at Sawmill Pond

One day, local business owner was at Brother's having breakfast when he noticed all of the money was gone. He found out from owner Spencer Weiss that he had taken it all down and was now inside threes large garbage bag.
"It consumed the whole place," Weiss said of the cash over every inch of space. "It diminished the feel."

Tahoe Mountain Milers are holding their annual Kokanee Trail Runs during the Fall Fish Fest on October 8. Participants can choose to participate in the 5K, 10K 1/2 Marathon or the Tadpole Trot at the Sno-Park on Highway 89 north of Camp Richarson.
Race day registration begins at 6:00 a.m. or those wanting to join in can sign up
on October 7 at Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson. Online registration is at

NDOW allowing 20 black bears to be hunted; Protesters plan demonstration
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/29/2017 - 12:11amOn September 15, 2017 the annual Nevada bear hunt season opens, and this year 45 hunters have been issued tags to participate in the season that lasts until December 1, or until the quota of 20 black bears has been met. The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) calls this the "Black Bear Harvest."
In protest of the hunt, a "peaceful, educational" demonstration has been planned by NoBearHuntNV.org and Compassion Works International on September 16 in Reno. Participants will be meeting at the intersection of South Virginia and McCarran in front of Reno Star sculpture at 11:00 a.m.
Underwater ROV locates bodies of man missing in Lake Tahoe and boy in Stampede Reservoir

On June 8, 2017, Pham, whose full name is Pham Dan Vu Thanh, called a friend at 9:15 a.m. to tell him he was going kayaking and camping in the Lester Beach area. As of 6:15 p.m. that evening there had been no word from Dan.
On heels of Tahoe Summit, grant given to TRPA to monitor wetlands
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/22/2017 - 4:55pmThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $197,250 to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) to assess and restore wetlands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Today’s announcement coincided with the 21st annual Lake Tahoe Summit in South Lake Tahoe.
TRPA will use the grant to develop a regional plan for monitoring changes in wetlands over time, prioritizing wetland restoration efforts and establishing goals for successful wetland projects.
Reward offered to find who illegally reintroduced pike to Comins Lake

The voracious predator has again been illegally planted in the lake south of Ely, Nevada.

So far this year, West Nile virus activity has been reported in 28 California counties, including neighboring Sacramento and Placer counties. There have been four human cases of the virus reported from Kings, Kern, San Bernardino

Mapping glitch downsizes Preacher Fire to 4,651 acres burned

It was actively burning all day with single tree torching, creeping, and wind-driven runs. The total burned remains at 4,651 acres.

4:45 p.m. update: Acreage burned in the Preacher Fire is a lot less than previously reported due to a glitch in mapping. The fire, which started Monday with a lightning strike, has burned 4,651 acres.
History made with Mark Mulder win at American Century Championship
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/16/2017 - 5:38pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 28th annual American Century Championship is in the books, and former major league pitcher Mark Mulder won for the third straight year, the first three-peat at the celebrity golf classic at Edgewood Tahoe.
Mulder and his wife Lindsey once again brought their three kids to Lake Tahoe, all who ran out to the 18th green after Mark finished the day with a three-day total of 73 with the modified Stableford scoring.

The total purse for the championship is $600,000 with $125,000 going to the first place finisher.

USFS to start chemical treatment of invasive species in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/10/2017 - 1:46pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting later this month, the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will start using chemical treatment to try and eradicate, control and contain known infestations of invasive plants. Their focus will be on 90 sites covering 18.25 acres of sites inside the Lake Tahoe Basin.
TRPA, Keep Tahoe Blue and area schools log big miles during Tahoe Bike Challenge
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/27/2017 - 9:14amStaff with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue) took the top prizes in the 2017 Tahoe Bike Challenge, while hundreds of Tahoe youth rode in increasingly large bike-to-school events.
Each year, for the first two weeks of June, hundreds of Tahoe residents and visitors participate in the Tahoe Bike Challenge. In teams or as individuals, participants join a friendly competition to see who can replace the most car trips with trips by bicycle.
