National Trails Day in South Lake Tahoe postponed
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/12/2017 - 12:23pm1/13/17 update: Too much of a good thing can sometimes put a hitch in your plan! Tahoe received record snowfall in the past week and although clear skies are expected for the day of the hike, it has been postponed to a February date yet to be determined.
In addition, both the City and US Forest Services offices and Lake Tahoe Unified School District have been shut down for most of the week creating additional challenges getting the Generation Green students prepared to lead the event.

Widespread South Shore power outage from Stateline to Meyers; Also on SR 89 and Tahoe City
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/10/2017 - 10:23pm2:00 p.m. update - Power has been restored to a majority of customers in the Northstar, Squaw, Olympic Valley, Alpine Meadows, Glenshire, Martis Camp and Truckee areas. Liberty Utilities anticipates customers in Kings Beach, Tahoe City and Portola/Loyalton will also be restored today, Wednesday.
There are still challenges to restoring power from Emerald Bay to south of Homewood.
No word on how many South Lake Tahoe customers are still without power, or how long to get it back on.

South Lake Tahoe had 5.13" of rain Sunday; 2-5 feet of snow on the way

As the rain left the basin, snow has moved in and the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to remain in place until 4:00 a.m. Thursday, January 12.
Atmospheric River bringing 6"-12" of rain to Lake Tahoe Sunday
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/07/2017 - 12:25pmSouth Lake Tahoe, Calif. - The atmospheric river heading to Lake Tahoe will produce a period of intense rainfall with snow levels as high as 9000 feet early Sunday morning to Monday morning. The National Weather Service says to expect 6"-12" of rain around the Lake Tahoe basin, the Carson Range and the foothills of Carson City and Reno.
Lower elevations in Western Nevada will see 2"-4" of rain during this time frame.
6th annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.
Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

Next Lake Tahoe storm could drop another two feet of snow at lake level
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/03/2017 - 8:38amAs one storm leaves Lake Tahoe, the next one is waiting to enter, and forecasters say the new one could dump up to two feet of snow at lake level over the next two days.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning when the winter storm warning starts, and stays in place until 4:00 a.m. Thursday, January 5.
Expect widespread snow showers throughout the day on Tuesday, with snow becoming heaving at time this afternoon and all day Wednesday.
Basin fire operations to continue on North Shore next week
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/29/2016 - 10:39pmIf conditions are favorable, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. They will take place on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe near Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Carnelian Bay, and Incline Village.
A) Jennifer/Tyner Urban Fuels Reduction area near Incline Village will have 34 acres of hand piles scheduled to be burned.
B) Tahoe City along Fairway, across from NTFPD Station 51 - 8 acres to be burned.
C) Hwy 267 has 50 acres schedule for burning.
Overnight shaking a sign that Lake Tahoe is earthquake country
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/28/2016 - 10:28amPeople from the Central Valley of California to the middle of Nevada felt several earthquakes overnight, with the two largest recorded at 5.7 magnitude, followed by 73 other tremblors between midnight and 9:30 a.m. December 28, 2016.
Two arrested for 'spotlighting' and other charges surrounding illegal deer hunting
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/22/2016 - 11:35pmTwo Markleville, Calif., men were arrested on December 17 after a Department of Fish Wildlife warden caught them near Diamond Valley Road and Airport Road (Alpine County) as they attempted to "spotlight" deer.
According to Lt. Chris Stoots of California Fish & Wildlife, Ramsey Gene Horse, 29, and William Eugene Berreman, 26, were allegedly driving a Ford sedan with an artificial light in an attempt to spot and kill deer, an illegal action called spotlighting. They also had two loaded rifles in the back seat.
Felons arrested for shooting guns in Meyers
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/19/2016 - 10:03pmFour visitors to the South Shore were arrested by El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies on Friday night after they were caught shooting firearms on U.S. Forest Service land behind Tahoe Paradise Golf Course in Meyers.
On December 16, deputies responded to a call of shooting about 100 yards from the end of Lost Lane. Upon arrival they found four men, Alexander, Keoseng, Johlany and Yao Saechao with guns. Alexander and Keoseng are convicted felons from Stockton, Calif., and are prohibited from possessing firearms. All four were arrested and booked into the El Dorado County Jail.

The landmark plan charts a course to restore Lake Tahoe’s environment and revitalize our communities and it was forged through Herculean work by California, Nevada, local governments, the public, and dozens of other partners.
Many Tahoe Basin stakeholders once questioned if we could work together, but the Regional Plan ushered in an era of collaboration. Today, the answer is how can we work together more efficiently. By building and strengthening partnerships we have made remarkable progress. This year was no different.

Christmas Tree permits sold out for Lake Tahoe Basin

South Upper Truckee area (B on the map) - 50 acres of hand piles will be burned by USFS starting December 12 and continuing as conditions permit. Seven days burn down time. Smoke should flow North /Northeast.

Late night vote in Washington brings $415 million to Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/10/2016 - 9:28pmLate Friday night, the U.S. House of Representatives joined the U.S. Senate in passing the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act of 2016, which will bring $415 million in future funding to Lake Tahoe over the next seven years. The decision brought cheers from many local agencies, including the League to Save lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

This program, offered by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, is led by USFS rangers and community volunteers and gives students an outdoor winter ecology learning experience that takes place on snowshoes.

Lake Tahoe Restoration Act gets renewed support from Congress

North Lake Tahoe out of Christmas tree cutting permits, still some at SLT and Incline
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/05/2016 - 3:30pmThe North Lake Tahoe Visitor Center has run out of Christmas Tree cutting permits, but there are still some available at the Forest Supervisor’s office in South Lake Tahoe, the USFS office in Incline Village and at El Dorado National Forest offices.
Permits cost $10 each with a limit of two per family. They must be purchased in person, are not transferable and are sold on a first come, first serve basis through December 23, if available.
USFS looking for volunteers for Winter Trek snowshoe program at Heavenly

This Act provides $415 million in funding and reauthorizes important Lake Tahoe restoration activities that began in 1997 and refocuses federal, state and local efforts toward reducing wildfire threats, improving water quality and clarity, and combating invasive species. All of these are important to the local economy at one of the most visited lakes in the world.

Prescribed fire operations resume on Lake Tahoe's south and east shores
Submitted by admin on Fri, 12/02/2016 - 7:34pmPrescribed fire operations by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue next week at several locations around Lake Tahoe.
Fall and winter bring cooler temperatures and precipitation, which favor prescribed burning. The joint efforts to remove excess vegetation are scheduled to take place at nine different locations including Glenbrook, Cave Rock, Round Hill, lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Paradise and Meyers.

North Upper Truckee, Homer - 20 acres
Taylor Creek and Tallac restoration project approved, could begin next Spring
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/02/2016 - 4:58pmPlans for the Taylor Creek and Tallac Restoration Project have been finalized and work in the area could start as early as May, 2017 according to an announcement Friday by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).
The goal of the project is to restore the Taylor and Tallac creek ecosystems, maintenance and improvement of recreational facilities and enhance non-motorized access to the area.

Couple rescued after being stuck in the Sierras for two days reunited with family
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/29/2016 - 10:50amA Yuba City couple missing in the Sierra Nevada for two days were found late Monday afternoon by a search and rescue team who followed tracks they saw on a U.S. Forest Service road.
Susan and Rory Holloter had gone for a drive in the Wentworth Springs Road area of El Dorado County at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 26 in their Dodge Ramcharger. A storm hit the area that afternoon and the couple became stuck.

Sledder sues after allegedly being burned by USFS burn pile

Gianfranco Rufino filed a complaint on Nov. 16, 2016 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California against United States, alleging negligence.
Emerald Fire showed how fuel reduction minimized forest damage

It just takes a field trip to the site of the Emerald fire near the southwestern shores of Lake Tahoe.
Despite burning at the same time and under similar conditions to the disastrous Little Valley fire, the Emerald fire was much less destructive.
