Forest Service proposes to relocate Zephyr Point Lookout
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/13/2013 - 6:04pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is proposing to relocate the Zephyr Point Fire Lookout from its current location to a new site on top of White Hill above Spooner Summit in Douglas County, Nev. The lookout, which was determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, would be dismantled from its current location and reassembled at the new site.

Santee, California becomes 9th city to declare Oct 25 as “Rajan Zed Day”

Cities of Hartford (Connecticut), Taylorsville (Utah), Madera (California), Sparks (Nevada), Chowchilla (California), Sanger (California), Exeter (California) and Tulare (California) have already declared October 25 as “Rajan Zed Day”. City of Reno has also proclaimed a day in Zed’s recognition twice in the past.

Sugar Pine Foundation Has Busy Planting Season Ahead

The group has several opportunities this fall to help save the trees by planting seedling in areas around the lake. 850 seedlings have already been planted this fall and more will be planted at the following events:

Some Good News Comes Out of Rim Fire Area

Firefighters set back fires to save Yosemite’s Rockefeller, Merced and Tuolumne groves of giant sequoias and giant pines. The tallest sugar pine, 264 ft, lived according to the Sugar Pine Foundation.
In other Rim Fire News, the fire is still burning north of Yosemite. it is now 92% contained and has burned 257,135 acres (402 square miles) to date.
LTCC Teachers Honored for Excellence

O’Laughlin was selected by LTCC students as their Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Lukas was chosen by his fellow faculty members as the Distinguished Faculty Award recipient. The winners will each personally receive $500 thanks to a generous donation by the LTCC Foundation. They’ll also each get to direct another $500 towards the LTCC program or scholarship or classroom materials of their choice.
South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade

A week of homecoming festivities at South Tahoe High begins on Saturday, September 28 with the annual parade through town. At 10 am the parade will begin at the LTUSD bus garage on Al Tahoe Boulevard and head along Highway 50 to the high school.
Trucks full of students, cars carrying alumni, cheerleaders, teams, the pep band and more will join the parade route.
The South Tahoe High Alumni Foundation has planned the event which will also include members of the classes of 1963, 1964, 1966, 1968 and 1973.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Tahoe Heritage Foundation will host the Fall Fish Festival Oct. 5-6, offering a variety of free, fun events with the beautiful backdrop of Taylor Creek in the fall.
Formerly the Kokanee Salmon Festival, the Fall Fish Festival will focus on the variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and its rivers. In addition to the Kokanee, these species include the federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout and little-known smaller fish, such as speckled dace.

Scholarship programs a big success at Lake Tahoe Community College

In June 2013, the college handed out $81,000 in scholarship dollars: the most in the college’s history.
All of those dollars will help 66 LTCC students to continue their education, providing much-needed funds to cover the costs of tuition, textbooks, and other resources necessary to academic success.

The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.
Intercollegiate soccer launched at Lake Tahoe Community College

The LTCC Board of Trustees voted in favor of launching the soccer program at its last meeting on June 25. LTCC’s Physical Education Department is developing the curriculum surrounding the program, and a decision on a new team name and mascot will soon follow.
Job announcements for the related coaching positions will be released in August, with hiring decisions finalized by October. The new men’s and women’s soccer teams will take the field competitively starting in September 2014.
New LTCC Earth Science Scholarship Honors Former Instructor

The Carl Young Memorial Earth Science Scholarship is being established to honor the meteorology teacher, who died when he and two colleagues were chasing tornadoes just outside Oklahoma City.
This new Earth Science scholarship will be the first of its kind at LTCC according to geology and earth science instructor Scott Valentine, who worked with Mr. Young’s parents to establish the scholarship.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department raises $6,000 for St. Baldrick's Foundation
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 03/16/2013 - 5:57pmSouth Lake Tahoe Firefighters participated and raised $6,000 in the second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation event in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, March 8. The St. Baldrick’s foundation was formed in 2005 and surpassed $100 million in donations last year for childhood cancer research across the nation. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department put together one of several teams from the community who all rallied together to raise money.
Tahoe Fund announces $1 million Founders Circle campaign goal
