The El Dorado County Vacation Home Rental Ordinance was first created in 1997 and updated in 2004. At this time there are 900 permitted vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the County, 800 of which are in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

What started out with a “Good Neighbor Policy” has morphed into neighbors versus neighbors in El Dorado County and an ongoing VHR discussion as Supervisors work to create a new ordinance.

The El Dorado County Tax Collector will be holding a meeting to discuss vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the non-city limits portions of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the SLT library.

C.L. Raffety is holding the public meeting to discuss recent changes in the ordinance, and hear suggestions for amendments. Under consideration for changes include no sub-leases of vacation homes, signage requirements and looking at ways to eliminate clusters of VHRs in neighborhoods.

Starting in the upcoming Fall 2016 quarter, Lake Tahoe Community College will once again be offering reduced tuition to residents of certain nearby Nevada communities in the Tahoe Basin. Up to 100 Nevada residents living in specific communities who meet the parameters established in the new partnership between California and Nevada can tap into the new, lower cost, which is three times the California resident rate, or $93 per unit. This equates to a savings of $88 per unit from the $181 per-unit rate established for all other non-residents attending LTCC.

Last week, South Tahoe Now carried a story about changes on the South Shore, businesses who were moving, starting or renovating.

Since that time, information has surfaced about one of the subjects, the Tahoe Pines Lodge.

New owner Darren Cobrae said he wanted to remodel the aging motel which has become home to long term renters. His plans for the property included adding two restaurants and retail space.

In response to noise, trash and occupancy complaints, the City of South Lake Tahoe has adopted a new Vacation Home Rental Ordinance. The vote was 4-0 in favor since Councilman Tom Davis had to recuse himself since he is part owner of Tahoe Keys Resort.

It’s been nearly four years since I moved to South Lake Tahoe and became president of Lake Tahoe Community College. When I first arrived, I heard an earful from community members who were upset about the loss of the Good Neighbor Policy (GNP). This policy was established by the Nevada System of Higher Education in 1988. It made it possible for Basin students living on the Nevada side to attend LTCC at California resident rates.

The County's Treasurer/Tax Collector’s Office has invited everyone who lives in the county, lives near a vacation rental, owns a vacation rental or manages them to their meeing being held at the South Lake Tahoe Library at 11 a.m.

Just a few years ago home buyers were choosing the Nevada side over the California side when looking for a Lake Tahoe home to purchase. Taxes were lower and schools were better so Nevada was more attractive. But is that still the feeling? There's good news, and bad news, depending on which neighborhood/state you're set on owning a home in.
