El Dorado County reviewing their vacation rental ordinance

El Dorado County initiated the "Good Neighbor Program" in 2014 after holding a public meeting on October 23 of that year.
Tax Collector Cherie Raffety said during the meeting that the County wanted vacation homes to be a good neighbor instead of creating a situation that causes Sheriff's deputies to be called out for excessive noise. Management companies were to go to neighbors, introduce themselves and leave contact info.
Since that time, the lure of owning a vacation home in South Lake Tahoe and renting it to vacationers has grown, and an increase of rules in the city limits has moved more vacation homes into the county portion of the South Shore.
An increase of complaints is causing issues in many neighborhoods. Signs can be seen in Montgomery Estates that state their disapproval of vacation home rentals (VHRs). Many of the residents have said there is very little enforcement of the ordinance in the county and they are frustrated and want change, much like the residents of the City.
During the last Board of Supervisor's (BOS) meeting, El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel asked that an Ad Hoc committee be formed to study VHRs. They would then return to the BOS with recommendations to changes to the current VHR Ordinance.
The committee is made up of Supervisors Novasel and Ranalli, representatives from the County's two enforcement departments (Sheriff's Office and Tax Collector), and the County Chief Administrative Office.
According to Novasel, they will be meeting soon for a staff-level organizational meeting and then participating in public-held discussions.
The October 17 BOS meeting will be held in South Lake Tahoe. Novasel asked that the Tax Collector's Office give a presentation of the current ordinance, and then she'll be outlining the committee's plan.
This meeting will be held in the Lahontan Water board room at 971 Silver Dollar Avenue in South Lake Tahoe starting at 9:00 a.m. The agenda is not available at this time.
Normally this annual South Lake Tahoe is held on a week the South Lake Tahoe City Council is not meeting, but the Council changed their meeting dates in October, thus scheduling it for the same time as the BOS meeting.
A community group called "Peaceful Tahoe Coalition" has been formed to address VHRs in the county. They plan on meeting with Novasel in the near future.
