City Council hears update on US50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project

Event Date:
March 14, 2019 - 5:00pm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been over three decades in the making. The US50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the Loop Road, is getting closer to becoming a final plan and its implementation.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council heard a presentation by Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), Lew Feldman and John Hasty of Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on Tuesday, outlining what has been accomplished and what is left to be done.

Planned Meyers roundabout project to get underway in April

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to start work in April on their $4.1M project to convert the existing T-intersection at US50 and SR89 in Meyers into a three-leg roundabout.

Federal funds will be used to create what transportation officials say is a safety project by reducing the number and/or severity of collisions at the intersection. At this intersection there were 16 accidents on the Highway 50 side, and four accidents on the Highway 89 side from 2008 to 2013. There were no fatalities in those accidents.

California Supreme Court puts an end to the ''Loop Road' lawsuit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2016 a group of citizens gathered enough signatures to put a measure before the voters in November of that year to prevent the City of South Lake Tahoe from taking any action on what has been known as the Loop Road project (though the official name is the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project) without first getting approval by the voters.

Today the California Supreme Court put an end to that measure.

Sierra snowpack at 153% of average after snowy February

PHILLIPS, Calif. - The numbers weren't much of a surprise Thursday as the Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted the third Phillips Station snow survey of 2019.

What they found in the spot they've been using to measure since 1941 was good news.

The manual measurement recorded 113 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 43.5 inches, which is more than double what was recorded last month at this location.

Statewide, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is 153 percent of average for this date, thanks to several atmospheric rivers during February.

Column: Shaping Lake Tahoe’s future through collaboration

We are stronger at Lake Tahoe when we work together. Everyone benefits when people of different interests, backgrounds, and perspectives agree to bring their ideas, energy, and creativity to the table to shape solutions for a healthier, more vibrant, and sustainable Lake Tahoe.

Working together can be hard, of course. But we’ve built a spirit of collaboration at Lake Tahoe and it’s growing. Through it we are achieving things that once seemed impossible, things that we could never achieve working on our own.

Many stop on the highway and pull onto the shoulder (well, sort of) and head to the patch of snow. This behavior is causing problems for law enforcement, other drivers and is an accident waiting to happen.

Fairly mild South Lake Tahoe forecast with some chances for rain and snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There have been a few break in the clouds today, but full clearing is unlikely for many lower valleys. These stubborn clouds should
gradually decrease in coverage over the weekend with drier and warmer conditions this weekend according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Mountains will remain mild and in the sunshine. A weak system brings the potential for some light
rain and snow early next week. Although there are no signals for strong storms, the pattern looks to remain active through at least mid-month.
