Pulitzer prize-winning 'night, Mother opens at Duke Theatre in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/24/2018 - 8:29amA new South Lake Tahoe theater company has hit the road running with their production of 'night, Mother, a Pulitzer prize-winning play about the relationship between a mother and daughter. Friday, August 24 is opening night and the play will run at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theatre for two weekends.
Jessie, the daughter, has moved back home after a divorce and is depressed and is done with life and wants to end hers. Her relationship with mother Thelma is explored during the 90-minute play that is full of drama, dark comedy and emotion.
South Lake Tahoe artist's "Creu Hudol" heads to Burning Man Pavilion

Kelly, who is a seasoned "burner," heard from another that Burning Man had put out a request for proposals for panels and burnbots for the Man Pavilion, all which will be burned in a symbolic ritual on the final day of the popular event on Nevada's Black Rock Desert.
Bay Area teen to swim 21.3 miles across Lake Tahoe

She'll be swimming 21.3 miles across Lake Tahoe.
The 15-year-old Bay Area resident is after the California Triple Crown of Marathon Swimming, and when she gets out of the water Saturday morning she'll be the youngest person to do so. Only ten people have completed the Triple Crown, the youngest of that group being a 38-year-old man.

It's back to school for South Shore students

All school offices are open and available to help with registration and scheduling needs and to pick up schedules.
City clarifies Vacation Home Rental street parking rules
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/21/2018 - 10:31pmIn December of 2017, the South Lake Tahoe City Council approved the latest Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance based on months of workshops, testimony and compromise.
They found out during their meeting on August 21, 2018 that one portion of that ordinance cannot be enforced due to the Vehicle Code which allows for parking on streets.
This was brought to light during public comment at the meeting when local resident Andrea Olsen said the Community Service Officer (CSO) told her they could no longer enforce renters parking on city streets.
Ex-Humane Society director accused of embezzlement back in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/20/2018 - 7:52amNicola "Niki" Congero, the former Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS) executive director accused of embezzlement, is now sitting in the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville.
On Sunday, August 19, 2018, the El Dorado County Sheriff's extradition team returned from Knoxville, Tennessee with Congero. She is accused of using the LTHS debit card on personal things such gambling, rental furniture for her home, dentist bills, family cell phones, repairs to family members vehicles, and numerous point of sale purchases with cash back at casinos, just to name a few.

$5.8M Lisa Maloff University Center celebrated with grand opening
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/16/2018 - 9:00pmA new chapter for Lake Tahoe Community College started Thursday, 32 years after ground broke on the South Lake Tahoe campus, moving the school from an old motel into a new home on Al Tahoe Blvd. Construction is now complete on the $5.8M Lisa Maloff University Center and the doors are open, ready to welcome students enrolled in upper division classes with Sierra Nevada College, Brandman University and Washington State.
On August 16, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to officially open the center, located adjacent to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC).
Kingsbury Grade neighborhood shut down for explosive investigation
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/16/2018 - 8:49amOn Tuesday, August 14, parts of the Terrace View neighborhood off Kingsbury Grade were closed off as emergency responders investigated possible explosives at a home.
A homeowner called 911 when he found wires coming out of a hole in rocks. With all of the blasting that occurred in the granite around the lake in the past, he was unsure if the wire led to active explosives.
Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (RDFPD) arrived to investigate, shutting down Terrace View Drive from Kingsbury Grade to Kingsbury Circle.

Born in 1974 in Fresno, Greg moved with his family in 1977 to South Lake Tahoe. Greg graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1992 and worked for many years in the construction industry in South Lake Tahoe and the greater Bay Area, as a carpenter and craftsman.
Greg loved skiing, golf, RC cars, and placing a sports bet; he also had a passion for Vans, hoodies and baseball hats.

Column: Looking at other communities for housing solutions

One example is the Town of Vail’s “Vail InDEED” program. Like Tahoe, the Town of Vail is constrained by a lack of available land and high construction costs. Development of new housing is slow and costly. The Vail InDEED program was created to deed restrict existing properties to create a market for locals only.

August 15, 2018 - 6:30pm Chautauquan Deke DiMarzo will portray Watchman Alex Coryell: Virginia City Police Department 1873 to 1891 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 15 at 6:30 pm.
Alex R. Coryell was a watchman for the Virginia City Police Department from 1873 until June 25, 1891. Coryell was a Civil War veteran who left the state of Virginia after the war and moved to Virginia City, Nevada. His family became well known and prominent in Virginia City, with one of his relatives becoming a pharmacist on C Street.

Tahoe Keys corporation yard to move from Upper Truckee River marsh
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/08/2018 - 10:59pmThe Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) will be moving their corporation yard from a 2.21-acre parcel of environmentally sensitive land to a developable 0.99-acre parcel adjacent to the Tahoe Keys Marina.
On Wednesday, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board authorized their staff to move forward with an agreement with TKPOA. This move allows the Conservancy to restore the site as part of its Upper Truckee Marsh restoration project, one of the largest and most important restoration projects in the history of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Robin Holabird’s book about Nevada films Elvis, Marilyn and the Space Aliens was published by UN Press in 2017. Holabird honed her writing skills with a degree in Journalism from Humboldt State University and reporting stints at KOLO, the Sparks Tribune and other media outlets.

Douglas County honored for "Best Tasting Water in the State of Nevada"

On August 2, 2018, the Nevada Rural Water Association will announce and present Douglas County Utilities with the award during the Douglas County Board of County Commissioner’s Meeting. The service area includes the West Valley area from Walley’s to James Canyon.
Residents evacuated in Alpine County fire
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/02/2018 - 10:47am8:00 p.m. UPDATE: The evacuation of the Hung A Lei Ti neighborhood in Woodfords has been lifted and residents may return home. Power has been restored. According to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the fire size has been changed to 204.5 acres and containment lines are growing.

The Washoe Tribe's Hung A Lel Ti community in Woodfords has been evacuated after the Dutch Fire started in Alpine County early Wednesday morning. At last count, 244 acres have burned and the fire is 5 percent contained.
Former Lake Tahoe Humane Society director arrested on embezzlement charges
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/01/2018 - 10:45amDetectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department flew to Tennessee overnight to arrest Nicola "Niki" Congero, the former executive director of Lake Tahoe Humane Society.
Congero, 50, was arrested without incident on the morning of Wednesday, August 1 and booked into the Knoxville jail on charges of embezzling approximately $60,000 from the South Lake Tahoe based non-profit. She is being held there on $200,000 bail and is currently awaiting extradition.
Five South Lake Tahoe residents arrested after Homewood home burglarized twice
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/31/2018 - 11:25pmFive South Lake Tahoe residents have been arrested by the Placer County Sheriff's Office on burglary charges after a Homewood, California home was broken into twice in the past week.
After the first incident on July 24, deputies responded to Sacramento Avenue in Homewood for a reported residential burglary. The burglars had broken into a home and stole numerous items, including a Mercedes Benz that had been parked in the garage.
Former South Lake Tahoe couple loses home in Carr Fire

One couple attending this meeting lost their home off Iron Mountain Road after living there for only 11 months.
You kind of go numb. You grab stuff like, ‘Why did I get that and not that that was right next to it?’ you know,” said Kathy Williams.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It takes more than soil and seeds to make a garden, it takes nutrients and care, and in the case of the memorial garden at the South Lake Tahoe Library, it takes a love of books and the color purple.
Barbara Berezin-Kearney, affectionately known as BB, was a Literacy Specialist at South Lake Tahoe Library who spent endless hours teaching people to read at the library and jail so they could have a better future. After her passing in 2002, a memorial garden was built to remember her warm, loving and caring personality.

VHR deadline for bear box installation extended
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/26/2018 - 3:28pmCiting a lack of bear boxes and contractors to install them, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has extended the July 31, 2018 deadline their installation at vacation home rentals (VHRs) for two months.
The new ordinance that went into effect December 22, 2017 gave homeowners of the VHRs until this month to have them installed. While hundreds have been installed, there are still many waiting to get them in the ground and they are on waiting lists.

August 4, 2018 - 10:00am Chautauquan and noted local historian Michael Fischer will portray “Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg, Sr.” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 4, at 10:00 am.
H. F. Dangberg, Sr. helped to shape the agricultural and livestock history of Carson Valley. Beginning with 160 acres in 1856, Dangberg built an empire of ranches and farms that covered over 30,000 acres by 1902 when he formed the H. F. Dangberg Land & Live Stock Company. Some of the irrigation ditches, canals and reservoirs he dug are still in use today.

Free bereavement camp for Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley area kids

Kids who have experienced the death of a loved one are invited to attend the camp which offers education and support through a variety of fun-filled activities and programs on the shore of Lake Tahoe.
Nighttime parking to be eliminated near "Party Rock" in South Lake Tahoe

On October 13, 2017, several residents of the upper Saddle Road area met with U.S.
Forest Service, police and fire department staff. During the meeting, neighbors
expressed their frustration over the nighttime gatherings that take place in the area. One part of this meeting included a request by the neighbors to limit nighttime activities at nearby Party Rock.

The Old Genoa Cemetery: A Walking Tour – Book 1 is the first book in a four volume series of books written by historians Karen Dustman and Laurie Hickey, which highlight Genoa and Carson Valley’s earliest and most prominent settlers.

July 26, 2018 - 6:30pm In a return engagement, Sacramento area band, Todd Morgan and the Emblems, will bring 50s, 60s and Rockabilly style music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, July 26.
Todd Morgan and the Emblems is a young four-piece band, led by singer-songwriter and musician Todd Morgan. The band’s music consists of original pop and rock music, along with covers of 50s and 60s Rock-n-Roll and up to present day pop and rock songs. The band has recorded 3 albums.

More changes to VHR ordinance in El Dorado County to be discussed
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/19/2018 - 2:42pmDuring the July 24 El Dorado County Board of Supervisor's meeting, the next phase of additions to the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance will be discussed.
The ad hoc committee of Supervisors Sue Novasel and Michael Ranalli will be making the following recommendations:
Cap at a maximum of 12 overnight occupants, even if a home has enough bedrooms to accommodate more. The calculation of 2 people per bedroom plus 2. If someone wishes to have more than 12 the homeowner may apply for a conditional use permit.
