SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are three open seats on the South Tahoe Public Utility Board of Directors this election season, two for a four-year term and one for a two-year term.

South Tahoe Now reached out to the candidates and below are their answers to a set of questions. For the two four-year terms, incumbent Kelly Sheehan is running for reelection, Duane Wallace is running after being appointed to fill Jim Jones's spot on the board until this election, and they are joined by David Peterson.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health continues its expansion of medical imaging technology, investing in the latest equipment that enhances services, expands care, and improves the patient experience. The acquisition of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system has equipped Barton to now offer advanced MRI prostate and breast screenings. In addition, Barton’s Nuclear Medicine Suite recently completed a $1.2 million remodel to accommodate a new hybrid SPECT/CT scanning system that provides a new view on health issues within the body.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Monday, December 16 to celebrate the opening of the State Route 89 realignment, including the new Truckee River Bridge in Tahoe City.

Attendee parking will be located at the Tahoe City Transit Center along West Lake Blvd. The public should plan to arrive by 9:45 a.m. to park and walk to the ceremony location, which starts at 10:00 a.m. The bridge will be closed for the event.

The Christina, a 65-foot yacht that once called Lake Tahoe home, is now an iconic art car that has been cruising along the playa in the Black Rock Desert. She is returning to Lake Tahoe during "Docked at Hard Rock" November 1-2.

Flipper Manchester, a South Lake Tahoe construction company owner, was originally hired to demolish the yacht that had been dry-docked at the Tahoe Keys Marina for years.

Vail Resorts, Inc. announced Monday they have entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Peak Resorts, Inc. Through the acquisition, Vail will add 17 ski areas from the United States to its network of resorts.

The Peak resorts are located near major metropolitan areas, including New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Columbus, St. Louis, Kansas City and Louisville.

They include:
Vermont: Mount Snow in Vermont
New York: Hunter Mountain
New Hampshire: Attitash Mountain Resort, Wildcat Mountain and Crotched Mountain

It appears Mother Nature will be offering some great biking weather for the hundreds of participants in the 14th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge June 1 - 14. The two-week basin-wide event is a team-based challenge to encourage everyone to ride and experience the benefits and joys of cycling.

The event is co-sponsored by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition/

The fifth annual Zawadisha Holiday Bazaar will be held at The Landing on December 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on December 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Local entrepreneurs, artisans and the community are being connected to support the concept of shopping locally while making change globally. A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to Zawadisha, a social enterprise founded in Lake Tahoe by Jen Gurecki and Julie Lowe. Zawadisha will invest the funds from the event into their leadership and business training program for rural Kenyan women.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Have you ever wondered where the extra gas tax money you now pay at the pump is going? The increase on the excise taxes on gasoline and diesel along with new registration fee for cars based on their value have so far created 26 projects in District 3 as well as in other districts across the state.

But now that funding is being challenged.

On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to do two things: Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032; and reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040. The 100% Renewable Committee was formed to help the City accomplish these tasks.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chad Donnelly, the CEO of the SnowGlobe Music Festival, was in South Lake Tahoe last week to show his new sound mitigation expert the venue at the Community Playfields on Al Tahoe Blvd. He also met with Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis and three members of the No Globe Alliance, a citizen-formed group against the noise generated by the three-day outdoor festival, and Al Frangione of Lake Tahoe Community College.

Part of the Lake Tahoe Info portal, the Parcel Tracker provides a wide range of information for property owners and people considering buying or investing in property at Lake Tahoe.

Conserving and restoring Lake Tahoe’s natural environment and revitalizing its communities requires a delicate balancing act. Historically, building consensus around how to strike that balance has been one of the region’s greatest difficulties.

Lake Tahoe reached its strongest-ever consensus on that balance with the 2012 Regional Plan and its focus on sustainable redevelopment to restore natural areas, bring legacy development up to modern environmental standards, and create walkable, bikeable, and vibrant town centers.

Snow was hard to find Wednesday during the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) first measurement of the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada this winter.

Snowpack is off to a slow start, with just 3 percent of average found at Phillips Station, The measurement January 3 revealed a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 0.4 inches. The average is 11.3 inches in early January at Phillips, as measured there since 1964. It's elevation is 6,873 feet and located at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road.

The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) has selected Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows to host its next NBS Black Summit. The Summit serves as both the organization’s annual gathering of members and largest fundraiser. More than 800 NBS members and 300 guests from throughout the US and beyond are expected to attend the annual event. The week-long event will run March 3-10, 2018.

For 20 years, every August we’ve paused to reflect on our collective commitment to Lake Tahoe’s restoration at the Lake Tahoe Summit. This year, with U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein hosting the event, the issue of climate change will be front and center. Climate change poses incredible challenges for Tahoe, affecting not only the health of its famously cold, clear waters, but the health of its expansive forests and what is to become of our $5 billion outdoor recreation-based economy.

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - Residents of South Lake Tahoe take pride in their city, its beauty, charm and recreational opportunities, and action during Tuesday's City Council gave people another reason to appreciate their community.

In honor of Earth Day, the City of South Lake Tahoe joined at least 26 other municipalities in the United States, and the latest in a growing coalition of mountain communities, to commit to 100 percent clean and renewable electricity by the year 2032.

As a sitting Council Member and Board Member of Lodging Association, I urge voters to vote Yes on Measure P – “P” for Play and Recreation. This would increase hotel taxes by 2% throughout the City. The Lodging Association is supporting this measure because Recreation is our economy; investing in our economy will encourage more visitors and visitors to stay longer, which in turn supports the rest of our local economy.

I am writing this letter in support of Nick Exline's candidacy for the STPUD Board. I have known Nick for several years now and agree with him that renewable energy is our future! He is passionate about, not only how climate change is affecting us, but also what we can do to help solve some of these concerns.

Not quite two years after his last promotion to chief managing officer of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, Bill Cottrill needs another business card. Cottrill, who has been with the property for 18 years, was promoted to general manager effective June 1 by the hotel’s ownership group Premier Hotel Collection.

Cottrill’s long tenure is not unusual for the hotel that enjoys a continuously low turnover rate year after year.

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to know where you want them to invest their resources when it comes to roads and recreation. There are many needs, as most residents are aware, and the City is going to listen to the public to see where efforts should be concentrated.

"We want to measure community opinions regarding proposed funding solutions for investing in streets, roads, parks and recreation as well as other community priorities," said City Manager Nancy Kerry.
