The city received some good news this week. We were successfully awarded $2.9 million in federal funds to complete all of the funding for the Sierra Blvd. Streetscape project-we are now 100% funded through construction. The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club’s sponsor crew had a busy evening at their Monday, July 10th Adopt A Day of Nourishment dinner event. Helping the Bread & Broth volunteers at their sponsorship meal were SLTYC members George and Liz-Ann Hainsworth, Tina Miranda and Joseph and Bonnie Phair. This hardworking team prepared the utensils, bagged food ‘giveaways’, served the BBQ chicken dinner, worked the drinks and dessert table and ended their evening cleaning and putting away the tables and chairs.

To help address the needs of the hungry of our community, Bread & Broth, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, has been serving free, nutritious meals for all who come to our Monday Meal dinner at St. Theresa Grace Hall. To fund these meals, B&B invites individuals, families, businesses and service clubs/organizations to sponsor an ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’. By donating a tax-deductible gift of $250.00, up to 110 people will be fed and up to 5 folks from the sponsor group can participate alongside the B&B volunteers at their sponsorship dinner.

Sass Talk: Cannabis, VHRs and the 4th of July

July kicks off the busiest time of the year for our city. Schools out, the temps are soaring in the valleys to the west and east of us, the roads are free of snow, and visitors from all over the world are getting away to see beautiful places and enjoy the great outdoors. For many of our businesses this is is the best time of the year. For many locals who like to play on the mountain trails and along the beach and eventually need to get to work, this is the hardest time of the year.

Throughout the month of May 2017 Choices for Children's Healthy Bottom Line Diaper Distribution program hosted the third annual Mother's Day Diaper Drive. We received generous donations from community businesses, child care providers, and agencies. All donations will go directly to helping our community's youngest and most vulnerable residents stay clean, dry and healthy by ensuring they have the diapering supplies that they need.

The Tahoe Douglas Elk Lodge #2670, an on-going supporter of the Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment program, hosted Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on June 12. The Elk Lodge is a service organization whose members work together on national and local levels to help the needy through community service. The Tahoe Douglas Elk Lodge exemplifies their mission through the many serve projects they perform for the South Lake Tahoe community and the Bread & Broth organization.

In addition to leadership events, club meetings, and recreation trips, the Club Live program at the Tahoe Middle School promotes service to others and on Monday, May 22nd, Club Live sponsored a Bread & Broth ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’. At the Monday Meal, program leaders Larry and Paula Lambdin and club members Mylee Blanchard, Destiny Hursh and Elisa Roberts provided incredible service to the guests who came to Grace Hall for a tasty and filling evening meal.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank the many community members and volunteers who helped in the clean-up and closing of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room in early May. The Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe arrived with their moving van and efficiently packed and moved our belongings into storage. Kim, William, and Lily Demus; Michelle, Brian, and Kelsey Hogan; Dave Huber; Matt, Miri, and Addie Lucksinger; Kathi Jensen; Guy Lease; Christine O'Farrell; and Randy Volgelgesang were all on hand to do the heavy lifting and moving.

Being a member of the Knights of Columbus means that you are there to help those in need. On Monday, May 15th, members of St. Theresa Church’s Knights of Columbus were doing just that as they volunteered their time to serve at B&B’s Monday Meal. They were a helpful and jovial group that welcomed and fed the hungry diners that came to Grace Hall for a full course, nutritious meal.

On behalf of the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH), I would like to thank our community for your support through the second winter of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room project. Ms. Lisa Maloff continues to impact the South Shore in a remarkable way. On May 18, 2017, Ms. Maloff gave a remarkable gift to the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF). During the spring gala, which focused on the theme of impact, Ms. Maloff was able to experience the loving warmth in the room after her surprise gift of $100,000 was announced. The standing ovation that she received was only a small symbol of the gratitude that was felt by the membership. The night was filled with immense hope for the future of South Lake Tahoe. Kudos: Tip-a-Cop in Douglas County raises funds for Special Olympics

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and the Special Olympics athletes wish to thank the community for their overwhelming generosity and support at the Tip-A-Cop event at Chili’s which was held on Thursday, April 27, 2017. During this event $2,726 was raised, the largest total the County has ever earned toward this worthy cause.

Through the generosity of the John McDougall Pay It Forward Lake Tahoe Community Fund held at the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, Bread & Broth provided a roasted chicken dinner with all of the fixings at its Monday Meal on April 24. The $250 grant funds enabled B&B to serve 107 meals and provide for 26 takeout meals to the grateful dinner guests who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall for the weekly Monday Meal.

Serving their first of two Bread & Broth “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsorships for the year, the HEROs employee organization from Harrah’s and Harveys’ casinos hosted the Monday Meal served at St. Theresa Grace Hall on April 17. Having the HEROs sponsor a B&B dinner is always a treat. Wearing their bright red HEROs t-shirts, the HEROs sponsor crew always shows up ready to help and bring smiles to the faces of the dinner guests.

Fifty four child care providers came together to enjoy breakfast, raffles generously donated by the South Lake Tahoe Community, and an inspiring presentation on Using Loose Parts (alluring objects that children can move, manipulate, control, and change within their play) to Support Language and Literacy Development.

On behalf of the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH), I would like to thank an anonymous donor who has donated $4,500 to extend the operating season of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room through April 30, 2017. This donation supports our mission of meeting the needs of our neighbors experiencing homelessness by providing warm beds and an overnight refuge from the elements to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the winter months.

The Girl Scouts of the Tahoe Shores Service Unit gathered at Kahle to celebrate Thinking Day. Thinking Day is a long tradition with Girl Scouts where girls have a fun opportunity to learn about their world and explore another country with their troop. About 50 girls tasted new foods at 11 booths, shared what they've learned with each other and played games from around the world. Troop 419 earned an additional Global Action Award for planning the event.

The GO Local: Business EXPO returned to the South Shore with huge success thanks to attendees, vendors, volunteers, and sponsors! Over 1,300 locals and visitors gathered inside the Harvey’s convention center, Friday, March 31, as Tahoe Chamber Member businesses showcased their latest programs, products, and services.

The night was highlighted with live entertainment from Heavenly Resort Mountain and The Loft Lounge, vendor giveaways including a raffle of two cruisers bikes courtesy of South Shore Bikes, and tasty food and beverage samples from all the generous restaurant vendors.

“This is our fourth time volunteering and our family loves it,” said Lenny Hellman on behalf of himself, wife Sarah and daughter Samantha Lee. “Our experience is rewarding as we are able to contribute to the community.”

Hosting their first “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” on Monday, March 27 the Hellman Family members were welcomed by the Bread & Broth volunteers as they joined in helping with the meal’s setup, serving and cleanup.

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Sass: Loop Road, housing and bike trails

With the warm spell of late, at lake level it looks like the big snow storms never happened. However, go up above 8,000 feet and you see a much different picture. Atop Heavenly’s Dipper Chair there is an information shack that is between 8-10 feet high. Next to it is 10 foot high signage indicating where the runs are. As of today, you can’t see either of these. Over 50 feet of snow fell up there and even with the melt and the settling, there is still a ton of white stuff. I expect our streams will be flowing into August and our mountains might stay white throughout the summer.

The Kirkwood team led by Tom Fortune included Kelly Keith, Reid and Mattie Devine, and Mike Niccoli and his daughter Iris. Thanks to Vail EpicPromise grant funding, Kirkwood hosts six Adopt A Days a year providing nutritious and filling meals to many hungry members of our community.

Choices for Children and the City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Services hosted Day of the Young Child on Saturday March 11, 2017. Twenty-seven agencies came together to offer a wide variety of early childhood activities including art, sensory activities and physical activities. Children enjoyed face painting, beading, painting, play
dough, planting, rock climbing, paper collages, chalk art, Pequeños Rascal Learning Center dancers and more. It truly was a lively day for families to connect and get information on community resources.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless hosted over 100 people at the second South Lake Tahoe Warm Room Open House event on February 22, 2017. We were proud to honor City Councilwoman Wendy David for her participation in the establishment of the Warm Room. David was facilitator of the Lake Tahoe Collaborative when a committee was established to create a vision and a plan for the Warm Room. Her support through nonprofit collaboration and in her role at the City of South Lake Tahoe has been greatly appreciated by all at TCH who have had the honor to work with her.

Kudos: A Thank You from South Shore’s Hardy Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Bus Riders

A big thank You to the City of South Lake Tahoe, the County of El Dorado, and the businesses and residents of Tahoe’s South Shore for clearing the snow from your sidewalks and paths.

Even during these big storms, you have made sure the multi-use paths and many sidewalks on the South Shore are passable. And after two feet of snow overnight, you made the roads and paths safe enough for 500+ locals to take to the streets by 11am on Jan 21st for the Women’s March. This is a big and welcome change from the previous years of sidewalk and bike path "freshies". Let’s save those for the slopes.

“The Filipino Community would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to Bread & Broth for once again giving us the opportunity to be a part of their very important and heart-warming Adopt A Day program,” commented Mila Seals. Heavenly Mountain Resort Skier Services crew members spend their time making sure that Heavenly guests and skiers enjoy a wonderful experience on the mountain. On Monday, February 27, Skier Services Adopt A Day sponsor crew members Ingrid Heinig, Kelsey Carapia, Jack Pippin, Megan Madrid and Amy Rice provided the same dedication to ensure that Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal guests had a wonderful dining experience.

“Heavenly and the Vail family cherish the opportunity to give back to the community,” said Amy. She and her fellow crew members were a real treat for the B&B volunteers.

A big thank you to all of the volunteers who braved snow covered roads to help feed the vulnerable and hungry at Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal serving on January 23. Being the biggest snow fall in years, no one was really sure if the meal’s volunteers or any dinner guests would be able to travel the roads to St. Theresa’s Grace Hall. Amazingly, 65 dinner guests and most of the scheduled volunteers attended the dinner.

What a lively and jubilant occasion at Barton Health’s Eighth Annual Festival of Trees & Lights. It is always a treat to see the delight in children’s eyes as they admire handcrafted trees and seek “treatment” for their injured teddy bears at the Teddy Bear Hospital.

Although it’s been a busy season safeguarding Heavenly Mountain Resort skiers, last Monday, January 16, the Heavenly Ski Patrol also wanted to help the community off the mountain. By sponsoring a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment, the Ski Patrol funded a B&B’s Monday Meal which not only provided a hot, tasty meal but also a chance to enjoy a warm and safe place to spend time with others.
