SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Lake Tahoe Marathon is October 12-14, 2018 with 1,800 athletes headed to town for the race. Over 20 events will take place around Lake Tahoe during the three days of fun and festivities this year, the 23rd year of the Marathon. Over 2,500 family members and friends are also expected to travel to the lake to watch and enjoy the town.

The following is a list of Caltrans projects for the following week in Lake Tahoe.

SPECIAL EVENT

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) will be closed to vehicle traffic in each direction around Emerald Bay from approximately 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 15 during the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Motorists should be aware of runners along the highway from Homewood to South Lake Tahoe. For more information on all the events from October 13-15, visit www.laketahoemarathon.com/

EMERGENCY PROJECTS

The kickoff events are now in the record books, and racers are now preparing for the rest of Lake Tahoe Marathon week to get started.

Saturday, October 8

7:00 a.m. - Cal-Neva Marathon, race from Sand Harbor to Homewood
9:00 a.m. - Carnelian Bay Half Marathon, race from Carnelian Bay to Homewood
9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. - Tahoe Sport & Fitness Expo at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel
9:00 p.m. - The Midnight Express 72 Mile Ultra - Round trip race around the lake starting at Lakeside Beach in South Lake Tahoe

Sunday, October 9

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

Right on the heels of the Tour de Tahoe Bike Race around the lake, the Lake Tahoe Marathon has begun Race Week.

On Friday, racers competed in the Emerald Bay Full and Half Marathons. There are 10 different races on Saturday: The Cal Neva Marathon, the Tahoe Nevada Half Marathon, a 5 mile Kayak Race, two and five mile Stand Up Paddle Races, Swim Races, Duathlon, Kids Fun Run, Super Hero 5k, 72 mile Loop the Lake Ultra Race and the Tahoe Double Marathon.

If that weren't enough action, Sunday is the main event plus 10k and 20 mile races.

Tahoe’s rugged landscape and mild summer temperatures attract a mountain of sports events. From large events such as America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride and the Lake Tahoe Marathon to local favorites like the Tahoe Kids Triathlon, there is sports event for every ability and age group. Barton Health’s medical staff is gearing up for many of these events, but not just to compete.

For some, their only connection to the Lake Tahoe Marathon is the billboard sign they see attached to a pick up around South Lake Tahoe. For others, it’s an amazing series of races that fill the south and west shore for several days every fall.

The man behind the race is Les Wright, long time South Lake Tahoe local. It is tough to find time to talk to Les these days. He is working 18 hour days and the time left for rest finds his mind full of marathon details, planning and organizing.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency staff have been on a roll of fitness-related activities over the last few weeks with participation in the Tough Mudder event, the Lake Tahoe Marathon, and other challenges.

Lake Tahoe area road delays and closures are effective now through Sunday for the Lake Tahoe Marathon. The following roads will experience delays:

The Lake Tahoe Marathon starts Sunday on Commons Beach in Tahoe City and finishes on Pope Beach near South Lake Tahoe. On Friday and Saturday you can run two other different marathons or half marathons, the Emerald Bay Marathon on Friday and on Saturday the Cal-Neva Marathon. Lake Tahoe South steps into high endurance overdrive this summer with two new outdoor adventure events that celebrate speed, agility and skill — one with feet to the ground and the other rubber to the road.

Sierra Recon, a high-energy, multi-distance obstacle race screaming the amped premise, “Everyone loves carnage” is set for July 14 at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, while the Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous celebrates the freedom of the wide open road, Aug. 23-26.
