Being in nature provides many wellness benefits. When we leave home to enjoy the bounty of outdoor activities, parks, and trails around us, we can honor those working on the front-line of the coronavirus pandemic by doing our part to stay healthy and keep each other safe.
South Lake Tahoe parks to remain closed during pandemic
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/03/2020 - 3:34pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Parks run by the City of South Lake Tahoe that were closed for the season will remain closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We aren’t discouraging public access to the parks, we want our residents to get outside during this crisis,” said Public Works Director Ray Jarvis. “We are going to keep the parks closed to vehicle access though to discourage large gatherings and to continue to encourage people to follow state and federal guidelines.”
Trees vandalized at popular South Lake Tahoe lakefront park
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/12/2019 - 2:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nine pine trees have been vandalized at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe in what appears to be an attempt to cut them down. Each tree has a wide swath of chopping action across it with boring holes at the base.
The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks Department was notified of the damage on Saturday, November 9 and a police report was generated. Staff is calling the destruction "a wanton act of vandalism and abuse of public trust."
The Jeffrey Pines are estimated to be about 20-years-old.
Ski for free on Olympic trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ski on the trails made famous in the 1960 Winter Olympics during a free ski day at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Saturday, February 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at the park and have invited the public to enjoy the sport in the same spot the biathlon and cross-country events of the Olympics were held.
The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime.
Public input sought for BIjou Community Park master plan

SOUTH LAKE THAOE, Caif. - What does the future Bijou Community Park look like? Will it expand, offer different recreational opportunities or does it remain the same?
The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Commissioners and City staff will host a public workshop at Bijou Community Park on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to obtain feedback from community members on opportunities to expand and create access to outdoor recreation.
The workshop is going to be "fun and interactive," according to organizers and will also include refreshments.
Liberty Utilities hosting two Lake Tahoe meetings about de-energization plans

Since July 2018, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) requires utilities to develop a plan to shut off power only as a last resort and
for a good reason in order to protect public safety.
Liberty's workshops will be to share information and answer questions about their plans. The two opportunities for the workshop are as follows:

Summer programs offered by the City of South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Department will be the focus of a kick-off party on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Recreation & Swim Complex.
They are gearing up for another summer season full of adventure, learning, fun and great memories. The event is free and designed to highlight summer programs, introduce recreation instructors and provide tours of the complex in a fun and festive environment.

Bijou Bike Park: Preventing damage, safety issues and planned updates
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/13/2016 - 5:27pmSledders and snowboarders this season were not kind to the new Bijou Bike Park, breaking down banked trails, overturning tables and benches, and leaving the area full of trash.
At Thursday's South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Commission meeting, City staff, commissions and bike enthusiasts discussed how to ensure the damage and some other issues at the park come to an end.
Bijou Bike Park Association receives proclamation at City Council meeting
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/03/2016 - 7:23pmThe Bijou Bike Park Association was recognized during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting with a proclamation honoring their successful creation of the bike park on Al Tahoe Blvd.
"I didn't know this was going to be so successful so quickly," said Amy Fish, an active member of the association. "Our kids can now ride side by side with world class GoPro cyclists at the park."
Amy accepted the award for her husband Ben who was out of town on business. He is the President of both Bijou Bike Park and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Associations
South Tahoe Greenway plans moving forward
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/18/2015 - 10:17pmSometime in the future, one will be able to hop on a bike at Van Sickle Bi-State Park and travel on Class 1 trails to Sierra Tract, and hopefully beyond.
The concept for the trail where people would walk and bike safely off the main roads actually began in 1985. Caltrans owned land through the middle of neighborhoods where a highway was proposed, but when it was apparent that would never be built, the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) joined Caltrans in discussions to obtain the land.

Regan Beach community meeting unveils top three plans

Almost 50 people attended the meeting, giving their input on the three choices. The engaged group gave Design Workshop, the company providing the redesign concepts, a lot of input on all three plans.

For every pint of blood donated, BloodSource will donate a pound of pet food to the Lake Tahoe Humane Society.

Community weighs in on future design of Regan Beach

Improvements at the park and beach are part of the recently completed Parks and Recreation Master Plan, and the City wants to know what the community would like to see here.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park closes to vehicle traffic; pedestrians welcome
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/30/2014 - 8:36pmThe gates to Van Sickle Bi-State Park closed today for the winter, but, as always, people are invited to take the easy walk into the park.
The California Tahoe Conservancy said today that the park will be closed from October 31 to May 1.
Paid parking is available nearby at the Parking Garage at Heavenly Village. The park provides opportunities for short day use outings, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun in the snow, however sledding is not allowed.
County Supervisors holding 10/28 meeting in South Lake Tahoe

Many topics pertaining to the South SHore will be on the agenda.
The South Lake Tahoe Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan will be presented by a consultant team. A vote will then be taken on whether to approve the plan and start the environmental review process. Those costs would be split with the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Live Violence Free to Raise Community-Wide Awareness

The entire month is dedicated to honoring victims and survivors of both child abuse and sexual assault. With 80 percent of sexual assault victims being under the age of 30 and a report of child abuse made every ten seconds, it is vital we stand up against the dangers of the abuse. As two of our primary focuses at LVF, we are illuminating the truths and celebrating the efforts to combat the violence directly impacting our community.

The event is hosted by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club and the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Department. Sign up at 10am.
Races held snow, rain or shine! Race distances range from 25 yards for the kids to 2.8 miles for the adults. Youth races begin at 11am and adult race begins at noon. Winners in each division win a turkey. Second and third places receive pumpkin pies.

Medicare expert Margaret Reilly will host a community forum explaining Medicare and Health Insurance this Wednesday, October 3rd from 12:30-2pm at the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Facility located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd.
This meeting is for anyone who currently has, or is soon to have Medicare as their primary health insurance. This meeting will also be helpful for anyone who helps relatives or friends with Medicare.
Reilly is the Program Manager for HICAP, California’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, and is an expert on Medicare.
