South Lake Tahoe teachers and staff start to receive vaccines
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/14/2021 - 9:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A major step in preparing to open schools back up to in-person classes, teachers and staff from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) are receiving the first of two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The news of the available vaccines came earlier than the District expected. They hope to have all staff members receive the first vaccine within the next two weeks, and the second required injection within the next six weeks.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and California State Parks have joined together in an outreach campaign to provide simple actions to increase the enjoyment of the outdoors experience. Staying local, planning ahead, social distancing guidelines, not leaving trash and following the posted rules are just some of the ways to enjoy Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.
Boulder lands on roof of car on US50 west of Lake Tahoe

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a call at 1:30 p.m. January 13 from a person traveling on the highway that a rock "the size of a Yeti Cooler" was on the roadway, according to Officer Ruth Loehr. CHP responded and found not only the 2ft x 3ft boulder in the roadway, they also found the vehicle that it hit.

The passing of the department flag symbolizing the leadership change. The ceremony also included the pinning of Chief Lindgren whose daughter had the duty.

Kiwanis of Tahoe Sierra helping children in South Lake Tahoe

Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/12/2021 - 9:00pmTeresa Diane Golden, known as Teri, passed away peacefully in her home on December 29, 2020. She was 76. Teri loved living in South Lake Tahoe. She was active in the Democratic Party, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless, Christmas Cheer, the Drugstore Project, helping hikers on the Pacific Rim Trail, the AARP tax preparation, and many other endeavors. Teri was also a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and The Women of the Moose. Her neighbors described her as a loving and generous person.

The September announcement of the Project Homekey grant came with an end-of-the-year deadline so California communities would get the ball rolling on sheltering the chronic homeless.

It's official: NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe™ coming to Lake Tahoe

Bridgestone NHL Outdoors Saturday will showcase the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights on Feb. 20. Honda NHL Outdoors Sunday will feature the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins on Feb. 21. Both games will be broadcast at 3:00 p.m. ET on NBC in the United States and on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada.

Auditions for children's virtual musical, Super Happy Awesome News

To audition for the March 2021 production, parents will need to submit a video of their young thespian singing their favorite song for at least 30 seconds. The song choice can be anything from "Happy Birthday" to "Jingle Bells."

Limited ventilation and inversions will develop this week as high pressure remains overhead. Afternoon temperatures somewhat above average early in the week will rise to well above
average mid to late week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. They said the first chance at some unsettled weather comes after the holiday weekend, though confidence in a big system is low at this time.
South Lake Tahoe's new truck quickly becoming valuable fire-fighting tool

The December, 2020 arrival of a new ladder fire truck for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was a journey that began in 2013 when a Ferrara ladder truck has been ordered to the tune of almost $1,050,000. That truck replaced an aging 1982 truck and was paid for by California sales tax funds that are for public safety. As soon as that truck arrived in 2014 though, it was trouble.

First on the agenda is a possible vote on an update to City Code and the design standards included in it after receiving a grant from the State to do so. There have been public workshops and meetings with contractors and developers, along with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), to get their input on the updates the standards.

South Lake Tahoe residents may be called upon to participate in community health needs assessment

Questions from the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) will address individual health choices, as well as environmental and social issues. Responses will be used to help Barton Health identify areas of opportunity and improvement for our local population, as well as foster partnerships and award health grants to help meet the outstanding health needs of our community.

Holiday shopping winners announced; Almost $40,000 added to economy with Go Local program

Kicking off in late November for Small Business Saturday, the holiday contest recorded $39,134 in spending at local restaurants and retailers through January 1st, a 291 percent increase from the 2019 contest.

The approved $75,000 to be used for the purchase of bonus gift cards with the Tahoe Chamber. While a person purchases gift cards for use at local businesses they get a bonus gift card paid through the City's funding.

Tahoe Fund donors meet the Tahoe Blue Vodka challenge - $200,000 raised to clean Lake Tahoe

Support to meet the match was overwhelming, with the matching $100,000 coming from more than 135 businesses and people donating to the cause, including $25,000 from Vail Resorts.

Nora Mayland Kerr was born to Stateline NV. residents Dylan and Blair Kerr. Nora weighed six pounds 11 ounces at birth, measured 19 inches long, and was delivered by Dr. Clare Rudolph. Nora’s middle name is a long standing family name from her grandfather. Nora has one sibling, ten-year old sister, Emily.

Avalanche warning issued for the backcountry around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/04/2021 - 4:11pmThe Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Greater Lake Tahoe area through 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 5.
The affected area is the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.

Public meeting on planning of 56-Acre Master Plan

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is invited to participate in another 56-Acre Master Plan virtual session on January 20, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Planning is underway to create a signature park and area in the heart of South Lake Tahoe that will fill a large wish list of projects.
There are many ways the community can participate including taking the self-guided tour onsite, the online survey, and joining the public online meeting.

Faulty heat tape the cause of smoke at Sierra House Elementary Monday morning
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/04/2021 - 10:11amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded to Sierra House Elementary Monday after a report of smoke at the rear of the building.
The 8:02 a.m. call happened as staff and some students were arriving for the school day. Since it is remote learning at this time the school wasn't full and those that were there evacuated the building.
Cause of the smoke turned out to be a faulty heat tape and there was no damage to the structure or roof, just a rain gutter which had ice inside, according to LVFPD.
