1) What To Wear

Back in 2000 when I first began exploring Yoga I would show up for classes in anything from whatever I had worn to class that day to my running shorts and a tank. "Active Wear" was not a thing. It wasn't until I started attending classes at a local gym that I began to seek out clothing that would better allow me to stretch out and bend my body.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Vail Resorts Chief Executive Officer Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam, New York Times bestselling author and founder of Elana’s Pantry, today announced they were donating more than $2.8M to further strengthen emotional wellness programs in more than ten mountain communities where Vail Resorts operates. This is the second consecutive year their Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust has distributed behavioral health grants.

No One Can Make You Do Anything

On Thursday, October 31, Governor Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond visited El Dorado County and Blue Oak Elementary School to learn about the impacts of the recent PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). Gov. Newsom and Superintendent Thurmond met with El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ed Manansala, Buckeye Union School District (BUSD) Superintendent Dr. David Roth, and several BUSD officials to hear first-hand about the challenges that school officials encounter when making decisions regarding school closures.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is on Saturday, September 28 and in the Lake Tahoe Basin it will be celebrated by the parking fee being waived for the day at the Eagle Falls Trailhead.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) manages approximately 78 percent of the public land in the Tahoe Basin. They will continue to the celebration of NPLD through the weekend of October 5-6 when they host a booth at the Fall Fish Festival at Taylor Creek in South Lake Tahoe. This time is also the 50th anniversary of Desolation Wilderness.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has two new members - Christopher Cable and Charles Roesch. Both men were sworn in during a ceremony Tuesday, September 17.

Before their swearing in, both Cable and Roesch graduated from the six-month long Napa Police Academy on Saturday. At graduation both were honored for their grades and skills and ended up as the top two in their class.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students at Sierra House Elementary School will be walking through the doors of their school for the first time this year, two weeks after the rest of those in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

When a fire damaged the school in November 2018, little did anyone know that it would take almost 10 months to reopen.

The Tahoe Chamber's next Connect for a Cause Mixer will benefit the local non-profit, SOS Outreach. The mixer will take place on August 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Revive Coffee & Wine in South Lake Tahoe. The community is invited to enjoy this fun evening and support an organization that has had an incredible impact on the South Shore community.

Everyone is invited to spend a day learning about Lake Tahoe’s unique natural environment, ecology, and conservation from area experts. Family Science Day takes place from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at North Shore’s Kings Beach State Recreation Area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since 1978 Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) has been serving the community with a facility inside the home of founders, Tom and Cheryl Millham. Their long history of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing Tahoe’s injured and orphaned wildlife has gained national attention.

Another fun Friday afternoon performance at the South Lake Tahoe Library is planned for July at 2:00 p.m.

Catch Mad Science who will be performing their show “Destination: Moon!” which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Kids will have fun while learning about space vacuums, principles of flight and astronaut training.

The show is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Choices for Children would like to thank the community for their amazing support of the 2019 Healthy Bottom Line Mother's Day Diaper Drive. Throughout the month of May, donation boxes that had been decorated by our local Boys and Girls Club members were located throughout the community. We received thousands of diapers that will be distributed to our community's youngest and most vulnerable residents.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the City formed in 1965 it was incorporated as a general law city for the purpose of having more local control over public services such as police, fire, and snow removal.

Now there is discussion about changing to a charter city. During their March 5 meeting, Councilmember Cody Bass asked that this subject come forward at a future meeting and Councilmembers Jason Collin and Devin Middlebrook said they were interested in learning more about what the differences are between the two, and what it would mean to South Lake Tahoe to switch.

El Dorado County's HUB5*, which spans from Pollock Pines to South Lake Tahoe, is offering a free family workshop with focus on Infants and Toddlers on June 15th and June 22nd from 9am to 12pm. It is possible to only attend one portion but it is recommended to attend both. Refreshments and childcare will be provided. The workshop will take place at Step by Step Early Learning Center at 981 Silver Dollar Ave, South Lake Tahoe. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Reading can be enjoyed by all South Lake Tahoe students this summer, even without stepping into the library. Summer is a great time to keep Reading and learning and be prepared for fall.

Library cards can be used online for ebooks and downloadable audiobooks whether you're in town, at grandma's house or on vacation somewhere across the globe.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund, the South Lake Tahoe Library was able to purchase over 130 new Spanish and English ebooks and downloadable audiobooks to support students.

On July 17, 1982, the body of a woman was found off of a hiking trail in the Sheep's Flat area near Mt. Rose just a few miles above Incline Village, was found. There was no identification or jewelry on the victim and investigators could tell by her clothing she may have been headed to Lake Tahoe when she was murdered.

And there was no suspect.

For over three decades, both her and her killer's identity have been unknown but with new DNA technologies, hard work by a team of law enforcement investigators and genealogists, the case has been solved.

The Foster and Kinship Care Education (FKCE) program at Lake Tahoe Community College is offering a free class at Lake Tahoe Community College on "Neurodiversity: ADHD, Autism Spectrum, Sensory Processing Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Differently Abled vs Special Needs." It will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the college's room B103.

Up until only a few decades ago, for as long as humans have existed, parenting has been guesswork. New parents would get information and guidance from their elders or peers based on anecdotal evidence. We are lucky enough to live in an exciting time where we have research to find evidence for what parenting strategies and qualities lead to the most successful outcomes for children. Of course, there is not one cookie cutter way for each child, and being flexible in learning what works best for your child is essential.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Have you ever wondered who is there to advocate in court for the younger members of our community who are abused, neglected, or at-risk youth?

The Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, are volunteers there to advocate for and empower by speaking up for the needs of children and making a positive impact in their lives.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a day of crazy socks, mismatched shoes and untied shoelaces at the Sierra House Elementary campus at Al Tahoe Learning Center Thursday in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day.

Kindergarten teacher Amy Terpening organized #RockYourSocks day in her classroom and held a surprise celebration of her student Dylan Polan who has Down Syndrome. The six-year-old came through a tunnel created by her fellow students and then sat down to be "interviewed" by her teacher. The students displayed paper socks they decorated with fun shapes and colors.

When the snow starts to melt and the rivers in the Sierra start running fast, be prepared to enjoy the whitewater excitement by taking three classes at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) this spring. The Wilderness Education & Outdoor Leadership program at LTCC is offering three classes - Beginning and Intermediate Whitewater Rafting, and Whitewater Guide School - all available at deep discounts.

LTCC has drastically cut the fees to make it possible for more residents to safely prepare for what’s promising to be an incredible rafting season in the Sierras.

We are Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church. This is a letter to our community to say that we are still here.
