Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/01/2019 - 6:22pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.
Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

It was an all-new design and ride with the only carryover being the 3.5L V-6 and even that was tricked out a bit with direct injection and 30 more ponies and nine more pounds of twist. Transmissions also got better with a standard six-speeder (one extra gear) and in the Touring and Elite trim lines, you’ll get a nine-speeder, which picks achieves about one mpg in the ratings.

Drug money allegedly motivated man accused of murdering Gardnerville women, Reno couple
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/23/2019 - 8:20amA Washoe County detective says alleged murderer Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman told police he robbed and killed his elderly victims during a 10-day rampage in January because he needed money to buy methamphetamine to support his drug addiction, according to the Associated Press.
Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman was arrested on Jan. 19 in connection with the four murders of Gardnerville woman Connie Koontz, 56, Gardnerville woman Sophia Renken, 74, and South Reno Couple Jerry and Sherry David, 81 and 80.
Teachers fill LTUSD board room to ask for pay increases

Jodi Dayberry, President of the South Tahoe Educators Association, led the teachers in their presentation to the LTUSD Board of Trustees, telling the five elected members teachers are struggling due to the high cost of living and many have second jobs and summer jobs to fill their financial void.

At Thursday's California Tahoe Conservancy meeting they announced their intent to sell one of its developable properties to Dinsmore Sierra who will finance and build the project which is across the street from Alpina Cafe.
Explosion damages Delta Saloon in Virginia City
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/12/2019 - 2:52pmAn explosion Tuesday morning at the historic Delta Saloon in Virginia City sent glass, brick and parts of the building into the street.
The explosion occurred shortly before 9:00 a.m. March 12.
The saloon, home of the Suicide Table, Silver Kings, and the $100000 Miners Globe, suffered extensive damage. C Street in the town was closed for a while but has reopened this afternoon.
Storey County offices were evacuated and employees moved to a safe location, but returned to work when deemed safe. The courthouse is open for normal business through the south parking lot door.
State Route 89 recreation plan to address traffic, experiences and parking
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/11/2019 - 10:53amLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Giving people a positive experience as they travel along the west shore of Lake Tahoe will require removing congestion from the roadway is one of the goals of the State Route 89 Recreation Corridor Management Plan.
A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations have been working on the plan which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council heard a presentation by Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), Lew Feldman and John Hasty of Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on Tuesday, outlining what has been accomplished and what is left to be done.
California Supreme Court puts an end to the ''Loop Road' lawsuit

Today the California Supreme Court put an end to that measure.

Students from South Tahoe High School are back from their Presidents’ Day break just in time for Advanced Placement, SAT and ACT tests to begin. The SAT exam takes place on March 9, while the ACT test is scheduled for April 13.
With the constant snow, the some of the students at STHS said they’re feeling the effects.
Alex Boyko, junior, said the miserable weather has made him a lot sadder recently.

City asks public to weigh in on Heavenly Village parking proposal

On Wednesday, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler presented his proposal to about a dozen people who attended a public meeting at the Marriott Grand Residence.
City-owned paid parking kiosks have been in storage since 2014 when Measure P put an end to the use of paid parking in various areas within the City limits, something approved by City Council in 2012.

On February 20, 2019, at about 4:30 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) was dispatched to a report of an unresponsive female in a vehicle at a local church parking lot. Fire and medical personnel responded and declared the woman deceased upon their arrival.

Sandbags available for area residents at several locations

Douglas County has sandbags available at nine locations and urges residents to assemble them on their property if there is a chance of flooding. Sandbag locations can are self-fill and the current locations are:

Volvo brought us the XC90 in model year 2003 and it won the Motor Trend SUV of the year. It was a trick vehicle and one of my favorites, especially when equipped with the spectacular 4.4L, 311 hp Yamaha V-8 engine. It was about the perfect SUV with great styling from Volvo designer, Doug Frasher, a man responsible for many great Volvo designs including the S80.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston hanging up his hat
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/04/2019 - 11:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fire Chief Jeff Meston is retiring from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) on February 28, five years and five months after he came out of retirement to head up the department.
On Friday, February 1, Meston submitted his resignation to the City.
"When I was hired by CM (City Manager) Kerry I promised to spend between 3-5 years with the City Fire Department and bring them as far as I could to be a “world class” fire department," Meston said in his resignation letter.
He feels he's accomplished what he set out to do.

Sierra House Elementary students move to full-day schedules at STMS/Al Tahoe

Just before the winter break classes were held at the Al Tahoe Elementary school site, home of the Boys & Girls Club, but that plan will now change starting January 14, 2018.

Each year SnowGlobe and their partners Waste-Free Earth, Chris's Cleaning, Full Circle Compost and South Tahoe Refuse work together on reducing and reusing the waste created at the festival, and with the Sugarpine Foundation to plant trees for future forests.
Highway snow play creating unsafe conditions on I80 as well as US50
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/31/2018 - 8:55pmOn December 27 South Tahoe Now published an article about the unsafe practices of motorists seeking snow play along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe and on Echo Summit, and now Caltrans is echoing that warning for other highways in the Sierra, especially Interstate 80.
Caltrans is reminding motorists that snow play is not permitted in State Roadside Rest Areas (SRRAs) or alongside highways, onramps or offramps for the safety of the public and other drivers.

Before they get here, hundreds of workers are spending many hours preparing the scene from the delivery and installation of stages, tents, electrical cables, ski jumps, trailers, vehicles and port-a-potties.

Many stop on the highway and pull onto the shoulder (well, sort of) and head to the patch of snow. This behavior is causing problems for law enforcement, other drivers and is an accident waiting to happen.
Early morning earthquakes near Carson City
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/20/2018 - 6:40amDid you feel them? There were two earthquakes in the southeast end of Carson City Thursday morning.
At 5:24 a.m. on December 20 a 3.6 earthquake hit in the area four miles to the SSE of downtown, almost 10 miles northeast of Genoa. Then, at 5:30 a.m., another one measuring 3.1 occurred in the same area.
As shown in the picture this same area has had a lot of seismic activity in the last two weeks. Eastern California and Northern Nevada experience thousands of earthquakes annually so Thursday's earthquakes aren't unusual, just larger than normal.
Community gives families displaced from South Lake Tahoe apartments some holiday cheer but still in need of permanent housing

As the deadline loomed panic set in for the residents of 3546 Spruce Avenue, they tried to find new housing in a city where available rentals are almost non-existent, especially for those of a lower income level without financial means to pay higher rent and deposits.
Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club helping out Sierra House families
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/17/2018 - 11:03amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One hundred percent of the operations of Sierra House Elementary have now moved over to the Al Tahoe school site (where the Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club is also housed) until possibly mid-February. Due to the size a split schedule is in place to accommodate the students, with some students only attending in the morning, others only in the afternoon.
The Boys and Girls Club (Club) is assisting parents with that split schedule and in partnership with Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be offering free programs and activities during the school day.
Cannabis ordinance may be in place in South Lake Tahoe by March 2019

Two versions of an ordinance were presented but neither passed muster in the eyes of the council and they hope to have one that addresses their issues come before them at their January 15, 2019 meeting.

On October 19, 2017, staff at the 3 Peaks Resort in South Lake Tahoe discovered two small children without clothes on, roaming the parking lot unattended. Staff attempted to return the boys to their parents after the kids were almost hit by a car. The parents, McGlothin and Logan, appeared to the staff to be under the influence of drugs and police were called.

2018 was a storied and undefeated regular season for the Lake Tahoe Community College women's soccer team. It was a year of many firsts.
The Coyotes were ranked number two at one point according to the United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division III women’s soccer national poll. They find out today when the next national poll results are released where they ended up nationally for the season.
50th annual Optimist Club Tree Lot in South Lake Tahoe

Stop by the corner of Lakeview Avenu and Lake Tahoe Boulevard for a dose of holiday spirit seven-days-a-week. There is free popcorn and hot cocoa for the kids as you start off on that journey to find the perect tree. The annual tree lot is open from 12:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends.
The Optmists have a selection of Grand Firs, Noble Firs, Silver Tips and Douglas Fir trees.
