Thrill seekers descend upon South Lake Tahoe for unique race

Thrill seekers, endurance athletes, and medical providers are gearing up for Primal Quest Lake Tahoe, a non-stop, unsupported race that attracts adventurers from Truckee to as far as New Zealand. The multi-sport expedition begins on the South Shore at Lake Tahoe August 19 or 20 and spans more than 450 miles of rugged terrain throughout the Sierra Nevada.

Olympic course designers creating South Lake Tahoe BMX park

The company that has built the BMX tracks for three Olympics, 40 World Cups and 10 World Championships is in South Lake Tahoe to build the Bijou Bike Park. Alex Fowler of Elite Trax, Inc has been in Rio de Janeiro building the track for the 2016 Summer Olympics, but he is much happier being in South Lake Tahoe creating what bicycle enthusiasts have been envisioning for year.

History of Lake Tahoe Mountain Biking at Meyers Mountain Bike Festival

South Lake Tahoe mountain bike pioneer, Gary Bell, owner of Sierra Ski and Cycle Works, is sponsoring a History of Lake Tahoe Mountain Biking Exhibit at the Meyers Mountain Bike (MTB) Festival on Sunday, August 9, 2015.

“I want to help people understand the roots of Tahoe mountain biking, and how it’s evolved over the past three decades,” says Bell.

Students benefit from Brief Intervention Program in South Lake Tahoe schools

Students at South Tahoe High and South Tahoe Middle schools now have an option to the normal suspension process thanks to the Brief Intervention Program (BIP) developed by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition.

In the past, students would be sent home for three days when suspended for having, or being under the influence, drugs or alcohol while at school. In many instances this method was looked at as a few days vacation with little, or no, opportunity to learn from their errors.

Everyone needs to take steps to ensure they are being fire smart in everything they do. Doing the right thing, the wrong way can start a wildfire.

Northstar holds special women's biking events all summer

Northstar California Resort is rolling out the red carpet for ladies all summer long with specialized mountain bike events and activities designed to fit the schedules and coaching needs of local women.

During the 2014-15 winter season, Vail Resorts launched the 4Her initiative, offering one-on-one ski and snowboard instruction for women, by women. This summer, Northstar is continuing the trend of customized activities that are women-centric.

Cycling celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

Cycling in South Lake Tahoe was the focus of the second Annual Cycle Celebration on Saturday. Kids both young and old were at the Heavenly Village to participate in a Bike Parade, Bike Rodeo, Bike Tune-Up station and informational booths.

The celebration wrapped up the two-week long Tahoe Bike Challenge where hundreds of people got out of their cars and biked to school, work and for play.

During Saturday's activities, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition honored the Town of Truckee and Karen & Pete Fink for their contributions to cycling in the region.

Northstar has transitioned from winter sports to summer, and to celebrate that they have given teens a new opportunity to get outside, soak up the gorgeous sunny Lake Tahoe weather and enjoy the best summer fun they’ve ever had.

Heavenly Gondola opens for the Memorial Day weekend

Heavenly Mountain Resort has switched gears from winter to summer and they're kicking off summer in South Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day Weekend. The Heavenly Gondola will be running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23-25 for sightseeing, dining and hiking on the mountain.

This is just a peek into activities at the top of the mountain since they won't open for full summer operations until June 12 when they'll start seven-day-a-week Gondola rides, unveil their new four line Hot Shot Zip Line, and open two of of the ropes courses, Discovery Forest and Boulder Cove.

10th Annual Tahoe Bike Challenge starts June 1

Every year for two weeks, hundreds of Lake Tahoe residents and visitors park their cars and ride their bikes to work, school, and for fun. Participants in the Tahoe Bike Challenge, which runs from June 1 to June 14, track their miles and join the friendly competition for fun prizes and bragging rights.

Northstar's summer activities launch May 15

Outdoor enthusiasts in Lake Tahoe will soon be able to access one of the North Shore's most popular destinations, Northstar California.

The Northstar Golf Course opens on May 15 with the rest of the extensive variety of summer adventure following with a May 22 grand opening.

Tahoe Chamber, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, El Dorado County, South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts and Sacramento International Airport would like to thank all of the attendees of Tuesday’s Tourism Forum at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. Over 100 people attended to get more information on upcoming recreation projects, hear lessons learned from Park City courtesy of keynote speakers Ken Fisher and Jonathan Weidenhamer, and to learn about the opportunities businesses may seize to target and accommodate the recreation guest.

Friday's Business Expo to feature 100 local businesses

The most innovative South Shore businesses will exhibit at the 2015 Business EXPO: Innovation in the Basin on Friday, March 27. The largest business and networking event of the year, Tahoe Chamber’s Business EXPO includes 100 local businesses ranging from restaurants and resorts to recreation providers to retailers. The event includes food and drink tastings, giveaways and a new networking lounge sponsored by the City of South Lake Tahoe, Winters Construction Group and Red Carpet Events and Design.

USFS asks for public input on Kingsbury Stinger Trail

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is asking for public input on a proposal to reconstruct the Kingsbury Stinger Trail near Kingsbury Grade. The Stinger Trail runs approximately 2.75 miles from Genoa Peak Road (Forest Road 14N32) to Terrace View Drive on lower Kingsbury Grade and is open to all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and mountain bikes. The trail is very steep in places, is prone to erosion, crosses private land for approximately 280 feet on the lower segment and no longer meets current Forest Service standards for safety and sustainability.

South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park

Boulder, Colorado has one. Portland, Oregon has one. Even Roseville and Truckee, California have one. If plans go as they appeared to during a presentation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, South Lake Tahoe will soon have one.

What is it?

"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.

Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.

Bijou Bike Park on Tuesday's City Council agenda

The Bijou Bike Park will take a step towards reality on Tuesday if the South Lake Tahoe City Council votes to approve the funding and in-kind services staff is recommending.

Members of the Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) presented the original project to the City back in September of 2011, and since then they've been working non-stop in their efforts to create the park. South Lake Tahoe BMX and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association have been helping BBPA in their efforts.

From exciting bike events to new world-class bike trails, 2014 was a great year for biking in Lake Tahoe. In no particular order, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition presents ten of the best highlights from the past 12 months:

Opening of Monument Peak Trail to be celebrated

The Tahoe Area Biking Association (TAMBA) and the U.S. Forest Service are inviting the public to join them as they celebrate the grand opening of the Monument Pass Trail near South Lake Tahoe.

On October 12, bikers will start off at the Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Blvd. at 9 a.m. Join the USFS Trail Crews on the 25 mile ride which will include 3500 feet of climbing (and decent).

The ride will go up Al Tahoe Blvd across Pioneer Trail to the Cold Creek Trail, up to Star Lake and Monument Peak, and back down.

Findorff named new Tahoe Sports and Entertainment GM

A collegiate Division 1 hockey player and pro prospect was named the new General Manager and Coaching Director for Tahoe Sports and Entertainment, Inc (TSE), the operators of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Michael Findorff joins TSE after working for Vail Resorts, most recently as Assistant Manager in Products, Sales and Service. Prior to that Findorff spent two years pursuing a professional hockey career with the New York Islanders and Phoenix Coyotes organizations.

Forest Service acquires Tahoe Mountain Parcels

Two more vacant lots in South Lake Tahoe have been added to the increasing cache of land the U.S. Forest Service has accumulated to preserve for public use.

These two lots are 3.13 acres each and located on Tahoe Mountain. They purchased one with great lake views for $135,000 and a second one for $100,000. This second lot is adjacent to the new hiking and mountain biking trail that begins on Deveron Way.

First Tees & Tastings Golf Tournament at Northstar at Tahoe

Northstar California Resort invites golfers and foodies alike to compete in the first annual Tees and Tastings tournament Thursday, August 28. The tournament will feature a two-game, nine-hole tournament with four beer and cuisine pairings throughout the front green of the Northstar Golf Course. Winners will receive tickets to the Wine & Brew Walk event, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 6 during the 29th Annual Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival.

New bikeways map released by Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coaltion

Locals and visitors alike enjoy riding bike in Lake Tahoe on a daily basis, and there is now a new tool for cyclists to use: a newly updated bicycle trail map showing all of the trails on the North and South shores.

With the addition of new trails around the basin, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) found it necessary to update the Lake Tahoe Bikeways Map. The newest stretch of trail from Fallen Leaf Lake to Baldwin Beach didn't make the printing deadline according to Ty Polastri, LTBC Project Director.

2nd Annual Meyers Mountain Bike Festival this weekend

The 2nd Annual Meyers Mountain Bike Festival will take place on August 10, 2014 in the Divided Sky parking lot, located at 3200 US Highway 50. The festival kicks off with a “Triple Crown Ride” covering 30+ miles and a 5,200 elevation gain. Riders should arrive at the Divided Sky at 7:30 a.m. to register for the ride. A $25 donation will support the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA), and Clif Bar will have water and fueling stations along the ride.

Competitive edge added to this year's Sample the Sierra

Festival goers will have their say this Labor Day weekend as Sample the Sierra adds a competitive edge to the food and wine festival with the introduction of a new award – Best Tasting Experience! Attendees will vote for the booth that has their favorite flavorful creation that includes fresh ingredients that are prepared by a local chef or restaurant and then paired with regional wine, beer or spirits. The booth with the most votes will be awarded the Best Tasting Experience of 2014.

Riding the Corral Loop: South Lake Tahoe

From www.bermstyle.com -I finally got out to ride Mr. Toads a few years ago, and it was a really fun trail —worthy of seeking out to experience. It was a lot more fun than sections of the Flume Trail and Rim Trail we’ve ridden, two XC rides that weren’t as exciting as we had hoped on longer travel rigs. After a discussion with Nat Lopes about building table top jump lines last year, (Nat and his company Hilride consulted on the project) I was looking forward to seeing the jump line on lower Corral.

Lake Tahoe Golf Course Opens For Season; Earliest Date in History

Golfers in South Lake Tahoe were out on the driving range at Lake Tahoe Golf Course this weekend, preparing for another season of golf. The driving range opened on Friday and the course will open on Friday, March 21.

Pictured here are, left to right, Chris Makowski, Sean Mitchell and Dave Zebo. Only in South Lake Tahoe can one enjoy winter, spring and summer sports on the same day. Makowski skied on Saturday morning and Mitchell went mountain biking prior to heading out to the driving range.

Mary Bennington, executive director of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, is featured on Friday's KUNR program Beyond The Headlines.

The Tahoe Rim Trail is one of the world's premier trails. It passes through California and Nevada, six counties, one state park, three National Forests, and three Wilderness areas. This spectacular trail is 165 miles of single-track multiuse trail, winding from peak to peak around Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts Heavenly, Northstar to open Wednesday, Kirkwood Friday

Powerful early-season storms combined with the area’s largest snowmaking operations have allowed Vail Resorts’ Lake Tahoe mountains – Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort – to open early with 111 acres. Heavenly and Northstar will open on Wednesday, Nov. 14 with a combined seven lifts and eight trails, totaling 51 acres.
