The first arrives Sunday night and the second is shaping up as a blockbuster storm for the Sierra with wind and snow impacts Tuesday night through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. An active and moist onshore flow is forecast to continue through the weekend and into early February.

A significant winter storm is looking increasingly likely by late Tuesday through at least Thursday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Additional waves of moderate to heavy snowfall are possible through next weekend.

Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe ahead of series of storms
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/21/2021 - 4:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Wind Advisory to be in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday, January 22. Southwest winds from 15-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected at Lake Tahoe. Waves 3-5 feet from mid-lake to the north and east shores are possible.
Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

The winds begin to increase Monday out of the northeast as a mostly dry low pressure system drops into the region according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Expect northeasterly flow to ramp up Monday night with damaging winds possible for the Sierra. Temperatures will cool back toward seasonal averages early this week with better potential for precipitation heading into the final week of January.

As more doses of the vaccine become available, each county is in charge of its own vaccination rollout. Most in California will be vaccinated at community vaccination sites, doctor’s offices, clinics or pharmacies, depending on their county's plans.
On the Nevada side of the lake the state has developed "lanes" instead of the California side "tiers." All information is listed below.
Fundraising campaign underway to add dog water station in Rabe Meadow

In cooperation with Douglas County, the U.S. Forest Service and Lake Tahoe Planning and Permitting LLC, Liz Lawton would like to raise the funds necessary to purchase and install a doggie drinking fountain and water bottle filling station. It would be located at the trailhead near the intersection of Kahle Drive and US50 by the restrooms.

New chief for Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/13/2021 - 7:10pmLAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There has been a change in command at Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD). Chief Gregory "Scott" Baker has retired and passed the department flag to new Chief Scott Lindgren during a small ceremony Wednesday.
The passing of the department flag symbolizing the leadership change. The ceremony also included the pinning of Chief Lindgren whose daughter had the duty.

Arrest made in connection with overdose death of Douglas County resident

On December 19, 2020, Jason Kaspian was found deceased due to a suspected overdose from an opioid-based substance in his Vista Grande Drive apartment. An investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) into Kaspian's death lead them to the person they believe sold him the controlled substance.

Avalanche warning issued for the backcountry around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/04/2021 - 4:11pmThe Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Greater Lake Tahoe area through 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 5.
The affected area is the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.
Avalanche Danger...HIGH avalanche danger exists today and tonight in the mountains.
Winter Weather Advisory forecast for the Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/02/2021 - 7:32pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An incoming storm has been upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory which is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Mono County from 4:00 a.m. Monday to 4:00 a.m. Tuesday. The rest of the storms forecast for the area have weakened though, with snowfall amounts greatly reduced.
A series of storms will affect the region starting Saturday night and going through next week. Overall potential impacts have trended lower that previously forecast, except for Monday which will feature strong winds and heavy mountain snows.

Small New Year's Eve crowds at Stateline keep US50 open
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/01/2021 - 7:01pmSTATELINE, Nev. - It was a much quieter holiday at Stateline this year with a decrease in calls for service, five arrests, and the lowest number of New Year's celebrants in a few decades.
US 50, the highway that runs from South Lake Tahoe into Stateline was not closed due the low number of people in the area. Law enforcement was able to keep those wanting to bring in the new year outside to the sidewalk or they stayed inside the casinos.
"The celebrants were well behaved and embraced the New Year’s Eve celebration," said Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges.
Tahoe Douglas Fire asks residents to "Adopt a Fire Hydrant" this winter
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/31/2020 - 7:48pmThere are 761 hydrants in the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) and they are looking for residents to "adopt" them by making sure they are shoveled out after each storm and kept cleared all winter.
The Nevada water districts and TDFPD urge everyone to get involved and join the effort by adopting a hydrant near their residence.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

Of those, 14 are in El Dorado Hills, 17 in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, 23 in Greater Placerville, 4 in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, 3 in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, 6 in North County, 2 in South County, 0 in Lake Tahoe region. Of those new cases, 6 are under the age of 18, 29 are age 18-49, 16 are aged 50-64, and 19 aged 65 or older. Total date of birth unknown: 4
Extensive period of stormy weather for Lake Tahoe anticipated to start off 2021..
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/30/2020 - 6:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a notable change ahead for a more active weather pattern for the Sierra and western Nevada with multiple periods of strong winds, heavy mountain snow, along with valley rain and snow. This forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) shows there be likely be significant travel impacts in the Sierra next week. Chances for valley snow (including down in Reno/Carson) will be increasing by midweek.

Law enforcement prepares for possible New Year's Eve crowds on South Shore
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/29/2020 - 9:03pmEven with the current pandemic, New Year's revelers could still flock to the Stateline casino corridor and South Lake Tahoe on Thursday so law enforcement will be prepared. With no SnowGlobe this year due to the pandemic, and Heavenly Village New Year's Eve activities canceled, it is unknown as to what will take place in an area that at one time saw 50,000 people in the streets to bring in the new year. Last year it was estimated 7,000 to 8,000 people took to the streets at midnight at Stateline and 6,500 at Heavenly Village for its 9:00 p.m. fireworks.
