With no SnowGlobe this year due to the pandemic, and Heavenly Village New Year's Eve activities canceled, it is unknown as to what will take place in an area that at one time saw 50,000 people in the streets to bring in the new year. Last year it was estimated 7,000 to 8,000 people took to the streets at midnight at Stateline and 6,500 at Heavenly Village for its 9:00 p.m. fireworks.

Seven outstanding restoration, sustainability, and construction projects were recognized as recipients of Best in the Basin awards by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during an online meeting of the agency’s Governing Board. The projects and programs each exhibit outstanding planning and execution and lead the way in environmental stewardship in the Lake Tahoe Region, according to the agency.

Beginning Monday, November 30, drivers will see changes to the flashing warning signals placed in advance of some traffic signals in Carson City and Douglas County, including Lake Tahoe, as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) updates the warning signals.

The Nevada Department of Transportation is inviting Nevada drivers to submit contest entries for creative traffic safety messages to be displayed on electronic freeway signs.

Last year, nearly 285 individuals were killed in Nevada traffic crashes. With over 90% of U.S. crashes caused in part by driver behavior, the message boards are an important driving safety reminder.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - In a move to increase safety along the highway in Zephyr Cove, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of US50 and Warrior Way next summer.

Almost 20,000 drivers travel that section of US50 on a daily basis. By controlling all directions of travel, the signal will help provide designated and safer access to and from the highway at the busy intersection.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - When the three parking lots with 90 spaces were created last year in Incline Village for the popular East Shore Trail, they were free but all were told paid parking was coming in the near future.

That time has now come.

Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) has unveiled the Park Tahoe pilot program at the trailhead north of Ponderosa Rand Road. The lots were created to expand off-highway parking options along the high traffic area of SR28 between Incline Village and Sand Harbor State Park.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has reopened Highway 395, deeming it safe to travel. The road has been closed due to the Numbers Fire.

Crews have been working on guard rails damaged by the fire which has burned 20,000 acres and is currently 5 percent contained. Three homes and 37 outbuildings have been lost or damaged.

Following a successful three-day operation in October, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this week released more than 4,600 Lahontan cutthroat trout into Lake Tahoe, helping to restore the iconic species to its native waters.

Lahontan cutthroat trout are the largest inland cutthroat trout in the world and the only trout native to Lake Tahoe.

The 4,645 fish from the Pilot Peak strain, originated at the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex in Gardnerville and were released into the Nevada side of the lake this week.

STATELINE, Nev. - A big rig heading west on US50 near the state line on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe caught on fire just after 3:00 a.m. Monday, March 2.

Crews from the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded. The driver of the truck disconnected the cab from the trailer and TDFPD was able to suppress the fire before it spread.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - New plans have been released on the State Route 28 corridor from Sand Harbor to Spooner Summit on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. After the success of the East Shore Trail from Incline Village to Sand Harbor, the plan is to continue the shared-use trail with other improvements to highway safety and infrastructure; summer recreational access; water, air and scenic quality; and increase non-motorized access to the corridor.

The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has issued a draft decision for the proposed improvements to this area.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Since its opening in June 2019, the new Tahoe East Shore Trail connecting Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park has quickly become an attraction for both residents and visitors interested in exploring Tahoe’s famed East Shore on foot or by bicycle. To augment the natural beauty of the immediate surroundings and transform a utilitarian tunnel into an enjoyable, relevant art experience, the Tahoe Fund and Tahoe Public Art have joined together to commission a mural that will be unique to the space.

Single lane closures will be in place on State Route 28 in Crystal Bay on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe on Thursday, Nov. 14 as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs a new “Welcome to Nevada” monument.

Single lane closures will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. near the intersection of SR28 and Stateline Road in Crystal Bay. Drivers should anticipate moderate travel delays as traffic flaggers and pilot cars alternate both directions of traffic through the work zone.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A call into "SafeVoice" about 10:00 p.m. Tuesday night outlined a specific threat to faculty and students at Douglas High School in Minden involving the use of a firearm. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) quickly responded, leading to the arrest of one juvenile for allegedly making threats against the school.

The SafeVoice Coordinator from the Nevada Division of Investigations and the DCSO resource officers worked together to quickly identify the juvenile(s) involved.

New "Welcome to Nevada" monuments are being installed by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) at two of the entrances to the state along US 395, with others planned at border crossings on SR28 in Crystal Bay and I-11 near Hoover Dam.

Installation of the monument near Topaz Lake was completed on October 15 and a welcome monument on U.S. 395 near Bordertown to be installed by the end of the month.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the first time ever, the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery will release 5,000 large Pilot Peak Lahontan cutthroat trout into their home waters of Lake Tahoe.

Over three days, the 12"-14" sized trout will be placed in the water, and the public is invited to two of those historic, interpretive stocking events during the Fall Fish Festival at Taylor Creek.

STATELINE, Nev. - At 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, NV Energy will resume work on Highway 50 in Stateline on the South Shore with new measures in place for traffic flow. A previous attempt resulted in traffic backed up to Zephyr Cove.

The work is to replace equipment in two underground electric vaults. The new traffic plan will be in effect 6:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30 through approximately 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4:

• One lane of traffic will be open in each direction on Highway 50 through the casino corridor.

A three-week project to improve reliability of an underground electrical vault on US50 at Stateline is on a temporary hold after the first day of the project September 18 resulted in a massive traffic jam from the casino corridor to Zephyr Cove.

STATELINE, Nev. - NV Energy will start work on Highway 50 at Stateline on Wednesday morning to replace equipment in two underground electric vaults.

The work, including excavation and repaving, is estimated to be completed by October 11. The schedule is subject to change based on weather.

During this time, NV Energy will work closely with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) regarding road closures.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Safety for visitors entering and exiting the Round Hill Pines Resort from U50 is the focus of a second public meeting on a project currently in the Environmental Assessment stage. The purpose of the project is to increase safety and improve accessibility for motorists, pedestrians, and bicycles entering and exiting the popular resort. HIghway planner say the major issues in the area are limited sight distance, unprotected turning movements across US50 and vehicle queuing in the eastbound inside lane of US50 during peak visitation periods

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be working on State Route 431, the Mt. Rose Highway, from August 28 to mid-October to improve roadside guardrail and resurface sections of the roadway.

The daytime work will require them to have intermittent lane closures from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on small sections of the highway in Incline Village and the northern side of Mt. Rose Summit. Though they expect drivers to have short delays, motorists should anticipate maximum travel delays of up to 30 minutes.
