DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A call into "SafeVoice" about 10:00 p.m. Tuesday night outlined a specific threat to faculty and students at Douglas High School in Minden involving the use of a firearm. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) quickly responded, leading to the arrest of one juvenile for allegedly making threats against the school.
The SafeVoice Coordinator from the Nevada Division of Investigations and the DCSO resource officers worked together to quickly identify the juvenile(s) involved.
DCSO responded to a residence where one juvenile was immediately arrested on charges of making threats against the school. There may another juvenile involved, according to DCSO.
The ages of the involved juveniles are not being released. No other details are available at this time since it still an active investigation.
"The Sheriff’s Office works closely with the School District to ensure the safety and security of the students and faculty. Sheriff Dan Coverley wants to ensure the community that any threats to the schools and/or students and faculty, such as this will, be responded to quickly and aggressively," said DCSO Sgt. Jeff Schemenauer in a press release.
SafeVoice was established in the Nevada Assembly in 2017 to protect student wellness, prevent violence and save lives. At the beginning of 2018, Douglas County had their systems in place, giving the public a chance to call in school matters just as an unidentified individual did Tuesday night.
Students, parents and faculty throughout Nevada now have access to SafeVoice, an anonymous reporting system used to report threats to the safety or well-being of students. In partnership with the Nevada Department of Public Safety, the SafeVoice program provides students a safe place to submit tips concerning their own safety or that of others. A fully trained professional team of experts responds in an appropriate manner 24/7/365. Tips always stay anonymous. Their number is 833-216-SAFE (7233).
