Reid's retirement – bad news for Lake Tahoe and Nevada
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/29/2015 - 8:30pmThe following is an opinion article from the Reno Gazette Journal and reprinted here:
It doesn't matter if you love or hate Democratic Sen. Harry Reid to agree that the announcement of his retirement just dramatically reduced our state's political power in Washington D.C.
Nevada will go from a state whose issues were often at the center of debate because of Reid's position as minority leader to a state without a congressional power player in either party.

At that time, the room full of agents, brokers and mortgage companies, all voiced their opinion against the proposal.

South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/03/2015 - 10:44pmBoulder, Colorado has one. Portland, Oregon has one. Even Roseville and Truckee, California have one. If plans go as they appeared to during a presentation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, South Lake Tahoe will soon have one.
What is it?
"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.
Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/28/2015 - 10:49amDan Rix, affectionately known as “Papa Dan” to his family, passed away peacefully at his home in South Lake Tahoe on February 11, 2015 at the age of 73 after a brave and courageous battle with a long illness. Dan was born December 30, 1941 in Pueblo, CO to Dorothy Mae and George Robert Rix and spent his childhood growing up in Daly City (CA). He eventually moved to Tulare (CA) with his family where he graduated from Tulare Union HS in 1959.
Opinion: Tahoe Paradise Park meetings now orderly and focused
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/22/2015 - 7:49pmGone was the yelling between board members. Gone was the yelling from the residents in the crowd. Gone was the uncomfortable feeling I had watching a Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District (TPRID) board meeting. Gone were the bullies. Gone were the mistruths.
Present was teamwork, respect, order, transparency and a general commitment to make the park a viable one that families, residents and visitors could enjoy.
Noise issues fuel review of SLT vacation home rental ordinance
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/18/2015 - 12:30amVacation home rentals are an everyday part of life in South Lake Tahoe, though during weekends and holiday periods their impact is much more noticeable. With the large number of visitors "living" in the area neighborhoods next to full time residents their impact has created tension over noise, trash and parking issues.
In the City limits there are currently 1,574 houses that have a permit to be operated as a vacation home. In comparison there are about 15-20% that number in vacation cities Santa Cruz and Napa.
Who is the target market for marijuana candy?
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/05/2015 - 10:48pmIn this photo can you tell which candies are made from marijuana and which ones are made with sugar and sold in all stores? The answer will be later in the story.
With marijuana now legal in many states, issues are arising that may have been overlooked in the eagerness to make marijuana legal.
Marijuana (cannabis) candies are hitting the market like a storm, and more people are now ending up in the E.R., or even dead, after ingesting them as well as brownies and cookies made from cannabis.

He is a good man and would be a good board member. My intention is to listen to everyone who is willing to give me their opinion. Community update meeting on the South Shore Community Vitalization Project

November 12, 2014 - 5:00pm
Known as the "Loop Road," the U.S. 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project is about two months away from having its environmental analysis completed. Expecting that completion in January, 2015, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is holding a community meeting will update people on the plan to realign traffic through the casino corridor.
Planners are working on a concept with a more walkable, bikeable and transit friendly "main street" from Pioneer Trail's intersection with Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to the loop road to the east side of MontBleu.
Opinion: Is Meyers a community willing to work together?
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/28/2014 - 10:14pmAfter witnessing the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District (TPRID) meeting last week I starting thinking how the residents of Meyers and Tahoe Paradise could be better served.
What happened at the TPRID meeting was a sad display of a board in action. There was yelling, arguing and, what one person witnessing everything said, “don’t air your dirty laundry in a meeting like this.”
Measures M, N, and O in El Dorado County - What do they mean for residents?
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/26/2014 - 10:47pmThe campaign posters on Measures M, N and O that have plastered the west slope for a few months have now made their way to South Lake Tahoe. But, what are they all about?
Growth, to put it in one word.
On one side you have people who want to have control of growth in the county and not let it go to Sacramento. On the other side there is a grass roots movement to keep all growth out of the county unless Cal Trans says its okay.
Opinion: Thousands of deadly weapons on the streets of South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/02/2014 - 11:02pmThere are several thousand deadly weapons on the streets of South Lake Tahoe every day.
This may seem like a drastic statement and I want to explain it. I'm not talking about guns or metal clubs, I'm talking about cars.
Have you ever waited at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra Blvd? How many times has someone rushed into the intersection against a red light as you were moving with your green light?

Bike Way Finding Signs Being Tested in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/08/2014 - 9:27pmHave you noticed the new, blue signs placed along some of the South Lake Tahoe bike trails? They are part of a pilot way finding sign project to help cyclists between Kingsbury Grade and Meyers.
There are currently eight signs up in four locations, so people using the trails can see the directions from opposing views.
According to Steve Noll, community planning consultant with Design Workshop, “the international best practices for way finding signs consist of four elements known as 'The Four D’s: distance, direction, destination and distinction'."

Opinion: Plastic bag ban or not, it's up to us to do the right thing
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/13/2014 - 9:07pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe imposed a single use, plastic bag ban for grocery stores in the city limits in October of 2013. The original ordinance was for grocery stores to implement the new policy on January 15, 2014 and for all other retail outlets to begin on October 15. During the June 17th City Council meeting, three Council members decided that the ban on all other retail outlets should be postponed and the final vote on that will be during this week's Council meeting.

2nd Phase of South Lake Tahoe Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance to be Delayed
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/17/2014 - 5:36pmAfter lengthy debate during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, a 3-2 vote changed the direction of the second phase of the plastic bag ban.
In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.
South Lake Tahoe Bag Ban Ordinance in Front of City Council Again
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/15/2014 - 8:39pmEvent Date:
June 17, 2014 - 9:00am
Food vendors/grocery stores in South Lake Tahoe have complied with a single use bag ban ordinance since January 15, 2014.
Many panicked business owners and residents expressed their reluctance at the time, afraid of unknown costs that might be involved as well as not having the convenience of plastic bags at check out.
If one looks at the attendance at the City's workshops for both residents and business owners on the subject, they'd assume everything is working out due to lack of participation.

Opinion: Lawsuits Are Not The Answer To Fireworks Debris
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/29/2014 - 4:27pmAs we all know, the economy and our environment are fundamentally intertwined. If we ever doubted the connection, those doubts should have been erased through the impacts of the Great Recession on our local economy. We need revenue from tourism to sustain our economy, which in turn helps to fund environmental projects that protect the natural beauty, which draws millions of visitors every year. We cannot have a thriving economy without protecting the environment and we cannot have a beautiful natural environment without money to protect and properly sustain it.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/01/2014 - 9:55amSeveral South Lake Tahoe residents showed up at the presentation of the Tahoe Area Plan at the airport on Thursday. Most agreed that the area known as the "Y" needs to be changed with an area plan, but which direction to a take to a final plan is where people differ.
The evening consisted of a presentation by John Hitchcock, who is on loan to the city from the TRPA for this project as Planning Project Manager. After he spoke the group broke out into three breakout sessions, each focuses on one of three choices presented as the future concept for "Y" area.

Parking a Hot Topic at South Lake Tahoe City Council Meeting
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/05/2014 - 12:09amPaid parking remains a hot topic in the city which was proven by the packed house at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. On the agenda was discussion and possible action on an initiative to prohibit paid parking on city streets.
Tahoe 4 Tahoe (T4T), a local group organized to fight paid parking, gathered more than the required signatures to get the initiative put on the ballot, but legal precedence and unforeseen consequences of the proposed initiative led the city council to vote unanimously to have a Fiscal Impact Report completed in the next 30 days.
Opinion: What's up with recycling program in South Lake Tahoe?
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 01/28/2014 - 6:16pmHello!
My name is Keely Kapsoff and after reading an article that was posted up in Incline I realized that I too needed to write a story about my concern with the recycling program in Tahoe.
Well it all started a few years ago when I moved back here and I brought my recyclables into the dump, I did this for many months and realized that every time I gave the guy a bag he would just throw it on top of all the trash. I asked many employees why we don't just have a place to put all the blue bags? All responded that there is a conveyor belt and it sorts it.
