We survived the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and resorts that remain open this week and for the season continue to make snow and spin lifts. Kirkwood has scheduled Chair #6 – Cornice Express to offer top to bottom skiing & riding. Mammoth Mtn. & Mt Rose also open top to bottom. More snow predicted to come through with a Winter Storm Watch starting Wednesday.

Kirkwood has three lifts and 15 trails open; Mammoth is open top to bottom with 12 lifts and 37 trails open; Squaw has Gold Coast open on the upper mountain; Mt. Rose is open top to bottom. Have fun and be safe! If you are departing the Lake Tahoe Basin, buckle up, drive safely and have patience with traffic.

Harrah's and Harveys donate $10,000 to Tahoe Rim Trail Association

Two South Shore casinos recently gave a donation of $10,000 to the Tahoe Rim Trail for their volunteer stewardship program.

Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe's contribution will help the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) achieve their goals of expanding opportunities for community members and tourists to experience nature, improve trail users’ safety, reduce negative environmental impacts, and create a desire to protect and restore Tahoe’s special places within the community.

This major retrospective exhibition, which is at the Reno museum through January 27, 2019, rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman (1869-1950) who is best known for her iconic landscape photographs made in the early 1900s depicting herself and other female nudes outdoors in the Sierra Nevada.

Tallac Historic Site turning into haunted "Tahoe Terror"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The story of Elias "Lucky" Baldwin has never quite been told as it will be during the inaugural Tahoe Terror at Tallac Historic Site.

Creative students and from South Tahoe High's Thunderclap AV Club and Key Club have created a haunted walk around the Baldwin House just in time for the Halloween season. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 19-21, guided and narrated tours from a host of spooky characters will take the public through the haunted grounds as the story is told of what happens to the servants and other unlucky souls at Lucky's estate.

Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Art Presentation at LTCC

New deputy forest supervisor selected for Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is pleased to announce that Danelle D. Harrison was selected as the new Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Harrison arrived at the LTBMU a few weeks ago and comes to us from the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona, where she served as the District Ranger for both the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts since 2014.

Over 150,000 rides made on Lime bikes and scooters in South Lake Tahoe

This summer has been a big one for Lime rides in South Lake Tahoe. Since they launches in May there have been over 100,000 scooter rides and over 50,000 bike rides on the popular lime green rentals. Lime started with bikes on May 21 and Scooters on June 6.

“Building Bridges” is the theme for the 3rd annual TEDx SouthLakeTahoe on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at MontBleu Resort and the speaker lineup is a robust one, including a South Tahoe High student.

Organizers aim to bring unity and positivity during a time that division is too strong a motivation. While each topic discussed will be different, they will intertwine with the theme in the presentations.

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe: Sean Pawling

On Sunday, 2003 South Tahoe High graduate Sean Pawling stopped by Revive Coffee & Wine to give an afternoon concert with his appropriately named band, The Sean Pawling Band.

In third grade at Meyers Elementary (now knows at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School), Sean said he knew he wanted to be a rock star so joined the inaugural season of the Blue Ribbon Choir. Since then he has taken his talents to UCLA where he majored in music and was the trombonist in the school's marching band, and then on to USC where he got a master's degree in music.

Safety precautions when both outside and inside during lightning

With lightning and thunderstorms in the Lake Tahoe forecast for another few days, it's always good to review safety tips when caught in the middle of a storm.

You can protect yourself from risk even if you are caught outdoors when lightning is close by.

Treating the whole person goal at new Robert Maloff Center

The new multi-million dollar Robert Maloff Center at Barton Memorial Hospital is stunning, resembling a high-end health club instead of the medical and wellness center it is. Inside its wood, glass and stone walls is the Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, bringing together services needed by those recovering from injuries and surgery into one building.

New deputy for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has a new deputy on board.

Dustin Clifford took the oath of office on July 2 during a ceremony with family and friends.

The new deputy was born and raised in Reno graduating from McQueen High School. After graduation he attended and graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.

Clifford enjoys the outdoors by hiking, fishing and hunting and is ready to begin his career with DCSO. He will be assigned to the Jail Division under the leadership of Captain Jim Halsey.

Second bird in El Dorado County tests positive for West Nile Virus

Another bird found in El Dorado County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the second so far for the County in 2018. The first one was in South Lake Tahoe and this one is on the west slope.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will host the eighth Wild Tahoe Weekend 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24, 2018 at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89. The weekend event consists of the Native Species Festival on Saturday and the Lake Tahoe Bird Festival on Sunday.

Cooler weekend with wind warnings, but watch for 80s next week!

Strong, gusty winds return to Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada, with a Lake Wind Advisory in effect most of the day Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Dry grass and gusty winds will create dangerous conditions for wildfire should a spark set them off....use care when outdoors as the fuels are ready.

Those heading out on Lake Tahoe and other area lakes need to be aware of hazardous boating conditions starting Friday, then going through Saturday. Remember to wear your personal flotation device at all times.

City Council makes it official: Dirk Brazil's interim city manager contract approved

He's been on the job for a few weeks, meeting with staff and getting to know the ropes in South Lake Tahoe, but Dirk Brazil's employment contract for the interim city manager position was officially approved at Tuesday's City Council meeting, his first official day on the job.

Lake Tahoe Yoga volunteers work on Elks Point bike path

Volunteers with Lake Tahoe Yoga came together to clean up the bike path that runs from Elks Point Road to Pine Ridge. The studio, serving the South Lake Tahoe area community for ten years, demonstrated their dedication to keeping Tahoe blue with a focus on Ahimsa (non-harming) and rallying residents to help on the path.

Bird in South Lake Tahoe tests positive for West Nile Virus

The first El Dorado County case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in South Lake Tahoe. County health officials received confirmation this week that a Stellar Jay found on May 7 has tested positive for the virus.

This bird was the first one for the county in 2018. Besides El Dorado COunty, West Nile virus activity in dead birds has been reported in two other California counties, San Mateo and Santa Clara.

Save a bear - be smart about food storage/trash disposal in the outdoors

Several Lake Tahoe agencies have joined together to remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal at all times while in bear country. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in the bear being killed, fines and/or jail time for violators. Every year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat and/or are damaging property. In some cases, the animals are euthanized.

Dirk Brazil ready to take on interim city manager role for South Lake Tahoe

Recently retired from the City of Davis, Dirk Brazil has been selected to become the City of South Lake Tahoe's interim city manager starting June 5.

Even though he doesn't start officially until next month, Brazil has been in town meeting with various stakeholders and getting to know the city.

He said a lot of things in a city are the same, departments and their functions are similar, but each one has its own issues.

2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival schedule announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The coming months at the historic Valhalla Grand Hall, Grand Lawn and Boathouse Theater will be busy with a full slate of activities planned for the 2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival.

The festival is Valhalla Tahoe’s flagship event, a unique celebration of music, theatre and the visual arts. The festival is set against the magnificent backdrop of Lake Tahoe and the Tallac Historic Site. Looking forward to its 34th year, it is produced by Valhalla Tahoe.

The Festival begins in mid-June with events and activities that continue throughout August.

Run the Carson Valley Days parade route in 5k Fun Run

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) is excited to announce their inaugural 5k Fun Run during Carson Valley Days on Saturday, June 9 starting at 8:00 a.m. The Partnership of Community Resources turned over the reins of the annual fun run to TYFS for mentoring programs. This is an opportunity for serious runners, walkers, joggers and families alike to “Run the Parade” route to help kick off the Carson Valley Days Parade. Groups, businesses, clubs and schools are encouraged to participate as a team.

Volunteer at state park and get free camping

Make new friends, learn new skills, and have fun volunteering with California State Park's Park Champions this spring at parks up and down California.

There will a volunteer event at Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park in Amador County on Thursday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Help them remove invasive plants and give native plants an opportunity to thrive.

Free tent camping is available for registered volunteers Wednesday night and a guided walk offered Thursday afternoon! Teens ages 14 and up are welcome with a legal guardian.

Barton Health welcomes new doctor to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Health has announced the addition of Dr. Gregory Burkard, Jr. to their family of care providers.

Burkard is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is an interventional pain and sports medicine physiatrist. This means he is a physician that treats a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, muscles, joints and more.

USFS gives opening dates for Lake Tahoe recreation areas

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will soon begin the process of opening recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Weather and snow conditions permitting, Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Baldwin and Nevada beaches open April 28. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens Friday, May 25. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens Tuesday, May 15, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 26.

Chuck Montgomery 1954~2018

Charles Reinhardt "Chuck" Montgomery passed peacefully on Friday, March 23, 2018 in South Lake Tahoe, California with his family by his side. He was 64 years old. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana June 28, 1954, Chuck was the first born son of Charles Williams Montgomery (1932-1970) and Eleanora Irene Hodges Montgomery Kroeger.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awards $25,003 to local programs benefiting youth

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded $25,003 towards programs in the local community that benefit youth during a luncheon on Wednesday, March 14.

Squaw Valley - Body of missing boarder found, avalanche injures 5

A snowboarder missing since yesterday afternoon was found deceased at Squaw Valley Ski Resort on Friday. Rocklin resident Wenyu Zhang, 42-years-old, was found deceased this morning by Squaw Valley Ski Patrol. A search area was narrowed through the use of a tracker program used by the resort.

Good decision making key to staying safe around Lake Tahoe

Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from Douglas County and El Dorado County save lives each year, and many times they have to respond to adverse conditions just as was the case when they were called out to Mott Canyon after two skiers were lost last week after skiing out of bounds at Heavenly.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds annual awards ceremony

An overflowing crowd of family, friends and community members filled the City Council chambers Monday as South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue held their 5th annual awards ceremony.

The staff was honored for their service doing a job that protects the lives, homes and environment of the South Lake Tahoe community and its visitors.

"Your recognition is well deserved, and well earned," said Mayor Wendy David.

SLTFR Fire Chief Jeff Meston led the ceremony which honored the following:

Douglas County Search and Rescue recruiting new volunteers

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (DCSAR) is looking for physically fit and energetic individuals to participate in its upcoming April academy and join their team.

DCSAR is a highly qualified and respected team comprised of approximately 50 trained volunteer members within the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are frequently called out to assist surrounding counties in their rescues, it requires a considerable commitment, but is tremendously rewarding when a life is saved.

Volunteers needed for USFS outdoor programs at Heavenly

Are you a college student looking for an internship this winter? Are you a retired school teacher who misses your students or providing education? Or maybe you simply love the outdoors and want to be involved in your community?

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is looking for volunteers to assist with their Winter Trek and Ski with a Ranger conservation education programs at Heavenly Mountain Resort from January through March 2018.

Partnership emphasizes nature is the best medicine

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To show nature is the best medicine, Barton Health and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) have partnered together to give the community Wellness Outings.

Patients will have access to the forest through a guided outing with a USFS ranger and physician or nurse.

In addition to Wellness Outings, the partnership will provide wellness and injury prevention training for USFS rangers and firefighters, as well as accessibility of public lands to promote outdoor recreation.

Dr. Jeffrey Orr returns to South Lake Tahoe as Barton's newest surgeon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Health announced today that Jeffrey Orr, MD, has returned to his hometown of South Lake Tahoe to join its network of talented orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Orr received his medical doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He conducted his orthopedic surgery residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He completed his fellowship training at the University of South Florida. He’s an affiliate of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Lake Tahoe Search and Rescue calls on the rise

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the busy summer season is over, those hiking in the mountains around Lake Tahoe needing help getting to safety are on the rise.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) team has been busy this fall, responding to almost double the number of calls.

From September 1 to October 30, 2016, the SAR volunteers responded to 12 incidents. So far in 2017 during the period, they are been called out 22 times.

Second bird in El Dorado County tests positive for West Nile Virus

A bird found on the west slope of El Dorado County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the second for 2017. The bird found near Garden Valley, an Acorn Woodpecker, was tested on September 29 and county health officials just received confirmation this week it had the virus.

To date there have been 463 dead birds to test positive in 38 counties in California. Nearby Sacramento has had 86 birds and Placer County, three birds.

Bird found in South Lake Tahoe tests positive for West Nile virus

The first El Dorado County case of West Nile virus was confirmed in South Lake Tahoe. County health officials received confirmation this week that a Stellar Jay found on July 31 has tested positive for the virus.

So far this year, West Nile virus activity has been reported in 28 California counties, including neighboring Sacramento and Placer counties. There have been four human cases of the virus reported from Kings, Kern, San Bernardino
and Los Angeles counties.

Wellness Outings: A prescription for “Nature as Medicine”

South Lake Tahoe, CA – Recovering from a major joint surgery doesn’t usually inspire the idea of snowshoeing by moonlight, but that’s exactly what Carol Bennis, age 75, was asked to do during her recovery last February.

Carol had never been on snowshoes before, or hiked at night, but when she heard her surgeon and other patients at a similar stage of recovery would be there, she decided to try it out.

Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz announced today that his company has committed to zero net emissions by 2030, zero waste to landfill by 2030 and zero net operating impact to forests and habitat.

"Everything we do at Vail Resorts is driven by the spectacular natural environments where our employees, guests and communities live, work and play," Katz said in a press release. "The environment – and our stakeholders’ passion for it – is our business, and we have a special obligation to protect it."

Hazy skies around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra

Have you noticed hazy skies around Lake Tahoe today? No, there are no fires nearby but the Air Quality Index (AQI) is showing a "moderate" range.

There are two fires southwest of Yosemite near Mariposa, but winds are most likely not strong enough to carry that smoke into the Tahoe Basin and Northern Nevada. The Spring Fire started Sunday afternoon and has now burned 60 acres. Nearby the four-day old Ben Fire is 95 percent contained.

July kicks off the busiest time of the year for our city. Schools out, the temps are soaring in the valleys to the west and east of us, the roads are free of snow, and visitors from all over the world are getting away to see beautiful places and enjoy the great outdoors. For many of our businesses this is is the best time of the year. For many locals who like to play on the mountain trails and along the beach and eventually need to get to work, this is the hardest time of the year.
