Are you a college student looking for an internship this winter? Are you a retired school teacher who misses your students or providing education? Or maybe you simply love the outdoors and want to be involved in your community?
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is looking for volunteers to assist with their Winter Trek and Ski with a Ranger conservation education programs at Heavenly Mountain Resort from January through March 2018.
The Winter Trek program is looking for individuals who can volunteer a minimum of four hours per day, one day per week beginning Jan. 9 and continuing through March 29, 2018. Winter Trek takes place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Volunteers should be able to snowshoe for 90 minutes at an elevation of 9,100 feet without difficulty and present a fire and forest ecology program to fifth-grade students. Snowshoes are provided. Experience working with kids is highly recommended.
The Ski with a Ranger program is looking for individuals who can volunteer a minimum of four hours per day, one day per week beginning Jan. 12 and continuing through April 6, weather permitting. Ski with a Ranger takes place on Mondays and Fridays. Volunteers should be at least an intermediate level skier or snowboarder and be able to follow and guide others on a one hour pre-determined route. A Heavenly Mountain Resort pass is not required but volunteers must provide their own equipment.
All volunteers should be comfortable speaking to large groups of people. Knowledge of Sierra Nevada natural history is a bonus! Reliable transportation to the transit center in Stateline, Nevada, is required and volunteers must be able to attend a mandatory training session in early January.
For more information on these amazing volunteer opportunities, contact Reanna Suela at rsuela@fs.fed.us for Winter Trek, or Jaclyn Tain at jtain@fs.fed.us for Ski with a Ranger.
