Mary Pickford was America’s Sweetheart. Pickford was an actress on the stage and in film, a writer, a producer, a director, and co-founder of a movie studio. She socialized with Hollywood’s most famous stars and married a swashbuckling film hero, Douglas Fairbanks. In 1955, Mary Pickford published her autobiography, Sunshine and Shadows. In this presentation, Pickford will discuss her book and her life.

El Dorado Courts now holding night court for small claims cases

October 17, 2016 - 5:30pm The Superior Court of El Dorado County will extend their hours by holding Small Claims Night Court starting October 17, 2016 at both South Lake Tahoe and Cameron Park.
Night Court will be held at the Cameron Park Court and the South Lake Tahoe Court.
Night Court for South Lake Tahoe Court will be:
3rd Monday in March, July, and November.
Night Court for Cameron Park Court will be
2nd Monday in January and 1st Monday in February
3rd Monday in April, May, June, August, September, October, and December.
Safety concerns along Highway 50 from Stateline to Spooner to be addressed
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/30/2016 - 8:21pmThe stretch of Highway 50 from Stateline to Spooner Summit (known as the corridor) will be looked at in the near future to address numerous safety concerns from cars parked on the side to unsafe intersections.
At the last meeting of the Tahoe Transportation District Board of Directors, several residents spoke up about safety, and offered several ideas to correct the issues.

Free entry to National Parks in celebration of 100th birthday

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed an act of Congress, the National Park Service Organic Act, which created the agency that now watches over 84.4 million acres of land, 4.5 million acres of oceans, reservoirs and lakes, 85,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 43,000 miles of shoreline.

Sheriff Pierini expressed his great appreciation at the efforts of the real estate agents of Re\MAX who worked together to create the treats and show their support to all of the employees who work tirelessly at the various their duties in Administration, Patrol, Jail, and Investigations, along with support personnel.
Jeanne Koerner from Re\MAX brought the baskets to the sheriff’s office.
Ground breaking at new Robert Maloff Center of Excellence at Barton

It's been 55 years since the Barton family donated the land where the first hospital in South Lake Tahoe was built, and it was in that same footprint of land that the ground was broken for the new center 26,000 square foot center on Tuesday.
Food Bank returns to South Lake Tahoe for free farmer's market and food distribution

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be stopping by South Lake Tahoe on August 24 with their truck full of fresh fruit and vegetables and other emergency food supplies for those in need.
There is one allocation of supplies available for each qualifying household at the pantry distribution which will take place at the American Legion Hall at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Nevada Governor Sandoval joins others as SR28 pathway project breaks ground
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/20/2016 - 9:52pmA two-three year project to create a three-mile shared-use path as well as enhance safety, accessibility and water quality on State Route 28 officially got underway Friday with a groundbreaking ceremony at Sand Harbor. Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval led the festivities that will improve the busy and narrow highway which sees more than 2.5 million vehicles and 2,000 pedestrians and bicyclists.
The path will run from the south end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.
Moose Lodge hosting 15th annual Kids' Fishing Derby at Lake Baron

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge is hosting their 15th annual Kids' Fishing Derby on Sunday, September 18, at Tahoe Paradise’s Lake Baron. Families find this event fun and exciting, and it is free to all children under the age of 16. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. at Lake Baron, near the main entrance.
Hot Dogs, Chips, Sodas, and water are provided free to all registered children and are available for purchase by others. The event wraps up at 1:00 p.m.
Headed to Shakespeare at Sand Harbor for final weekend? Expect delays
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/19/2016 - 1:23pmAs the annual Shakespeare Festival on the North Shore winds down, organizers want to alert Bard fans of possible delays on getting to the event at Sand Harbor, both from the north and the south ends of the lake.
Construction has begun on Highway 28, and continues on Highway 50 around Cave Rock and on Spooner Summit. Lane closures are involved, so allow extra time to get to the the park which is located just south of Incline Village.

The Grand March & Opening Ceremony will feature the Douglas High School Marching Band, the 1st Nevada Cavalry Co. D. along with bugler Ray Ahrenholz, and a cast of celebrities and presenters. Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” for the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony will feature Krista Jenkins singing "America the Beautiful".

Pair facing charges including counterfeiting and forgery
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/18/2016 - 4:15pmEl Dorado County Sheriff's deputies responded to the call of a disabled vehicle and came away with the arrest of two women on several charges stemming from what was found in that car.
On August 17, 2016, at approximately 6:45 a.m., the deputies went to the car which was in the roadway of Strolling Hills Road at the entrance to Safeway in Cameron Park. Once there they contacted two women, Tanya Starks, 35, and Kimberly Higgins, 47.

City officials still hope to make Knight's Inn and Ski Run corner project a reality
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/16/2016 - 10:29pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe is still trying to work out a deal with the Halferty Development Company, a $4 million sale of the developable portions of the lots known as the "Knights Inn Properties."
During Tuesday's City Council meeting a purchase agreement was scheduled to be voted on, but SLT City Manager Nancy Kerry had to pull it off the agenda.
"We are still working on it," Kerry told South Tahoe Now. "We are still negotiating and have some issues to work out."

Muir’s activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas.

Nevada Governor visits Lake Tahoe for Tahoe Beach Club groundbreaking

Mecay, President of Tahoe Beach Club, unveiled the end of the journey in a beachfront groundbreaking ceremony Monday in a spot that will see 143 condominium residences, a private beach club, two to five-bedroom condominiums, a private pier, lakefront clubhouse, health club, spa and pool.
Major project begins in Incline Village; Expect SR 28 road closures
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/15/2016 - 1:24pmWeekday lane closures will begin today, August 15, State Route 28 south of Incline Village as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) starts work on a multi-year project to construct a shared use path and make other roadway safety and water quality improvements.
Through fall, drivers should anticipate periodic construction-related lane closures on State Route 28 in the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek areas south of Incline Village.

Small fires started this summer at transient camps around South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/13/2016 - 11:36pmSouth Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and other area fire departments have responded to several illegal cooking fires in homeless encampments this summer, some which have spread to burn up to several hundred feet.
The cause of the July 19 fires behind the power station by the Heavenly Gondola and in the Trout Creek area behind Ross are still under investigation, but sources have said they were both most likely started by illegal campfires. Fire crews also responded to transient camp fires on July 27 and August 8 as well as several illegal cooking fires.
Accident and fire keeping roads into South Lake Tahoe busy with backed up traffic
Submitted by admin on Fri, 08/12/2016 - 3:22pmA fire just off of Cameron Park Drive is causing backups on Highway 50 in the eastbound lanes. So far, what we know is that several power poles in the Burdock Road area are on fire. El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies have blocked off traffic on Cameron Park Drive heading south to Burdock.
Highway 50 has resulting traffic, my according to CHP that is a result of people watching the flames and smoke which can be seen from the road.

Police arrest person of interest for sexual assault in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/08/2016 - 5:04pmA South Lake Tahoe man is behind bars after being identified as a possible suspect in at least one of the recent assault crimes in the community.
Oscar Raygoza Huerta, 23 of South Lake Tahoe, was arrested on Friday, August 5 on charges of assault intent to commit mayhem or rape, a felony. He is currently in the El Dorado County jail on a $100,000 bail hold.
Last week, South Lake Tahoe Police detectives released sketches of the suspect created after interviews with two of the victims. Leads from those photos led to the arrest.

Few people living in Nevada today know that Baby Face Nelson, whose given name was Lester Gillis, spent a great deal of time in Nevada. He was avoiding the heat from authorities in the Midwest. In Reno, he was afforded protection from arrest and incarceration because of his connections to Bill Graham and James McKay. Their political and business connections covered almost the entire state.

Stephen Tying Mather distinguished himself as a consummate salesman, including the iconic 20 Mule Team Borax brand, which helped him amass a fortune by the early 20th century. After visiting the new western national parks and meeting John Muir, Mather went on to mold the vision of the new National Park Service and was honored by being appointed its first director in 1916.

Cave Rock boat ramp to close for one to two months, Sand Harbor ramp closed for season
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/01/2016 - 9:28pmA construction project at the Cave Rock Boat Launch area has been underway for the past three weeks, closing part of the parking lot, and now the rest of the area will close starting Monday, August 1.
Nevada State Parks is installling new curbs and sidewalks, upgrading restrooms, removing the old unused boat ramp at the south end of the park, restriping the parking spaces and other enhancemnts to ease conjestion.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

He helped usher in the era known as “The Golden Age of Sport” along with baseball’s Babe Ruth, football’s Red Grange, golf’s Bobby Jones and tennis’ Bill Tilden.

Four fires burning north of Reno adding to smoke in Lake Tahoe basin
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/30/2016 - 7:33pmFour separate fires are burning north of Reno, sending smoke throughout Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin.
The Virginia Mountains Complex is made up currently of four separate wildland fires, including the Anderson (5626 acres), Sage (4239 acres), Seven Lakes (3063 acres) and Tule (7267 acres) Fires. All of these lightning-caused fires are burning within about 20-miles of each other in an arc about 35-miles north of Reno.
The vast majority of the public lands burning are administered by the Bureau of Land Management-Carson City District.

Man sought for assaulting women in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/28/2016 - 7:45pmOn July 25, a woman visiting South Lake Tahoe reported a robbery and attempted sexual assault in a laundry room at Lakeland Village on Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Over the past year, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has received at least three such reports and believe they may be related due to similarities in the subject's description and method of operation.
SLTPD wants to caution the public and is asking for help in identifying the suspect(s) in these cases.
Old KGID treatment plant and trailers removed for new luxury Lake Tahoe project

The mobile homes are all gone, with the remaining few given 90 day notices in January to vacate the property.

Mountain Resort Television reporter Dillon McKeen brings us the info on the Truckee Bike Park and Will's Kids, a new fundraiser to bring the art back into the South Lake Tahoe community for the younger set. Kili Ongoy from the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe shares the event information.
The joint fundraiser by six local non-profits will be held on August 5 at 3:30 p.m. at the Tahoe Tallac Site in South Lake Tahoe.
Sugar Pine seedlings need human help with watering due to lack of rain

SOS Outreach Camp students recently helped water the seedlings in the Gondola Fire Area in South Lake Tahoe, and more watering trips are planned.

Bandaged Bandit arrested after another bank robbery
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/26/2016 - 2:10pmA 22-year-old El Dorado Hills man is behind bars on suspicion of robbing several area banks between June 29 and July 25 from Stateline to Folsom with his face covered in bandages, earning him the nickname, the Bandaged Bandit.
On July 25 at 2:35 p.m., the US Bank on White Rock Road in El Dorado Hills was robbed by a suspect who fled into a wooded area southeast of the bank. Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol officers and helicopter started searching the area.

Free Farmer's Market in South Lake Tahoe for those in need; Volunteers needed
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/23/2016 - 8:59pmThe mobile food pantry from El Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion parking lot. For over 15 years the non-profit has brought food to the South Shore. Besides the food bags from local residents in need, the food bank also delivers to several non-profits in town including Senior Plaza and Bread and Broth.
During the summer and fall, extra fresh produce is added to the distributions.
Three new Battalion Chiefs for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/21/2016 - 12:31amSouth Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue recently promoted three men to the position of Battalion Chief, a move that Fire Chief Jeff Meston says will improve safety for both citizens and personnel.
Jim Drennan, Tim Spencer and Karl Koeppen are all now Battalion Chiefs for the City of South Lake Tahoe. Between them, they have over 61 years of firefighting experience.
Quick response to two fires burning near Heavenly Gondola
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/19/2016 - 5:49pm6:50 p.m. update - The gondola is no longer threatened by the Montreal Fire. The fires are contained at this time and expected to be controlled soon. Wrap up of fire activity is expected at 9:00 p.m. but personnel will remain on the scene to watch overnight.

Lake Tahoe area roadwork schedule July 17 - July 23

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

The beach at Lakeland Village will be the scene of the next FNCTN fundraiser to benefit Keep Tahoe Blue on Wednesday, July 20 at 7:00 p.m., and people nearby won't hear a thing!
There will be two movie screenings and a concert on the beach, all through special silent disco headphones. Guests receive a pair of Bluetooth headphones for the evening that have three separate channels. Each channel will be broadcasting movies and music at the same time, you choose your entertainment.
