Major project begins in Incline Village; Expect SR 28 road closures

Weekday lane closures will begin today, August 15, State Route 28 south of Incline Village as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) starts work on a multi-year project to construct a shared use path and make other roadway safety and water quality improvements.

Through fall, drivers should anticipate periodic construction-related lane closures on State Route 28 in the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek areas south of Incline Village.

The section of the two-lane, mountainside road being improved upon is the only access route for over one million recreationists and 2.6 million-plus vehicles per year. Use along the corridor continues to grow, with shoulder-parking projected to double in the next 20 years.

The major project components for this segment are:

- Three plus miles of shared-use path from south end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor
-Relocating and organizing shoulder-parking to new parking areas near Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café
- An undercrossing of SR-28 near Tunnel Creek
- Safety improvements along the SR 28 corridor that include centerline rumble strips, emergency, operation and maintenance turnouts
Erosion control/water quality improvements

NDOT says the lane closures will take place intermittently during both day and nighttime hours to allow for construction equipment to be staged and construction to begin on new roadside parking areas and undercrossing. One-way traffic with traffic flaggers and pilot cars will be in place to safely guide motorists through the road work zone in both directions, with minor travel delays to be expected. Additional construction-related lane and road closures will take place over the next two summers as construction of the pathway continues through 2018.

Governor Sandoval, the Nevada Department of Transportation and other project partners will ceremonially break ground on the roadway improvements Friday, August 19.

The project will build a three-plus mile shared-use path from the south end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park. Centerline rumble strips and emergency roadside turnouts will also be added to State Route 28, further enhancing motorist and pedestrian safety. In addition, water quality improvements such as enhanced roadside drainage inlets, sediment filtration systems and erosion control will be installed to help preserve the quality of stormwater entering Lake Tahoe.
