Each year, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) honors those that have made significant advancements in promoting safer bicycling and walking opportunities for Lake Tahoe. LTBC is seeking nominations from the public for individuals, public agencies, organizations, and businesses who made the Tahoe - Truckee region more bike-friendly in 2019.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "This is a good day for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department," said Chief Jeff Meston as he began the annual awards ceremony, celebrating the men and women of SLTFR.

To begin the afternoon, Chief Meston officially welcomed Battalion Chief Jay Manning to the department. Manning came on board at the end of November from Visalia, California where he worked for 18.5 years for the fire department. His wife Stephanie pinned his uniform as son Jacob and daughter Harley looked on. The family is wrapping up their move to the Sierra.

The celebrities in South Lake Tahoe this week for the 29th annual American Century Championship (ACC) are here for more than just the golf.

First, there are the friendships they've made over the years at the ACC. They look forward to returning every year to see those friends.

Secondly, there is Lake Tahoe. Those who live in towns around the lake or visit often know why. A beautiful lake, majestic mountains, tall trees and clean, fresh air.

Around two dozen runners and walkers remembered the victims of a mass shooting in Carson City that happened six years ago Wednesday in which five people died, including three Nevada National Guardsmen.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, were killed in a shooting at the south Carson City International House of Pancakes. Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, was also killed and her husband injured. The shooter, a man suffering from mental illness, turned the gun on himself.

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Teresa Duffy will lead the 107th annual Carson Valley Days parade as the Grand Marshall. The theme of the parade and festival is "A Salute to First Responders."

The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club is organizing the event which runs from June 9 to June 11. The club wanted to raise awareness, celebrate, honor and, most importantly, say thank you to the first responders of Douglas County, those who protect the community on a daily basis.

Outgoing South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman JoAnn Conner was honored for her four years of service to the community during a special Council meeting Monday. She was awarded a plaque, but didn't leave her former position without a few words to say.

Conner's term was not a quiet one. As she said she "fought for the little people," Conner also filed a lawsuit against the City and was censured by her colleagues.

As she spoke to the small group gathered in Chambers to bid farewell, Conner said she would continue to fight for the those that can't fight themselves.

The were some questions surrounding Monday's special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council, a meeting that will both certify the November 8 election results and honor outgoing City Council member JoAnn Conner with a plaque of appreciation.

In 2014, a special meeting was held to honor outgoing Council members Angela Swanson and Brooke Laine, both who lost in their bids for reelection. Conner lost her reelection bid this year.

Hal Cole, the longest serving City Councilmember in South Lake Tahoe, was honored in a ceremony during Tuesday's Council meeting, his last one after 20.5 years on the dais.

Cole chose not to run for a sixth term this November.

He started off his public service career in 1990 when he was named to the SLT Building Board of Appeals, was a part of the development of the Bijou Community Plan in 1993 as a Planning Commission. In 1994, Cole moved over to the City Council and was elected to a four-year term five times. During that tenure he was the City's Mayor an unprecedented six times.

Thousands of drivers pass by this tree on a weekly basis, but how many of them know of, or see, the memorial plaque sitting in a tree high above the road near the intersection of Highway 50 and Ski Run Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.

Long-time local resident, and veteran, Ken "Tahoe SkiBum" Curtzwiler placed the "9-11 Never Forget" in the tree at 1:00 a.m. on September 10, 2003 and it has remained in place ever since.

South Tahoe High may soon have a new Strength and Condition Center, and the public can make donations to have their name put on the project.

The Sports Medicine program at the school was developed to help train students to assist injured students, and the new plan at the school is being designed to prevent injuries to the student athlete.

Officials at Yosemite National Park said Friday they will temporarily close a popular campsite after two squirrels died of plague in the area.

Tuolumne Meadows Campground will close from noon Monday through noon Friday so authorities can treat the area with a flea-killing insecticide. Campers had their reservations canceled at the 304-site campground so the insecticide can be sprayed into rodent "burrow holes," the California Department of Health said Friday.

Plague is carried by rodents and is spread by fleas, but transmission between people is rare.

For the last three years there has been a Meyers community Tree lighting ceremony but in order to have the fourth annual event many Christmas lights are needed.

During a lightning storm this year, most of the lights were destroyed. In order to replaced them, the Meyers Community Foundation is raising money.

The tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, December 5 at 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to see Santa arrive on a special sled, enjoy cookies, popcorn and hot chocolate and help light the tree's 10,000 lights.

Despite smoky skies, South Lake Tahoe was still a hot spot this Labor Day Weekend. The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors honored Mark Divittorio for helping to rescue a family last month when their car plunged into the South Fork of the American River.

On Thursday, April 4 the Lemler family was traveling along Highway 50 when their vehicle left the roadway and ended up submerged and on its side in the American River. The three young daughters managed to escape to the roof of the vehicle. Mr. Lemler remained trapped inside the vehicle while Mrs. Lemler worked to keep his head above the water.

Tahoe Resource Conservation District Board President Bob Anderson presents retiring Board Member David C. Antonucci with a plaque recognizing him for his 10 years of service as a Board member to the District.

A Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Happy Homestead Cemetery, 1261 Johnson Blvd., in South Lake Tahoe. The service will recognize veterans past and present and will be followed by cake and coffee at American Legion Post 795, 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Barton Health staff and administration recently filled “The Snowflake Lounge” at Barton Memorial Hospital Thursday, March 30 in honor of “National Doctors Day,” established in 1958. Drs Henning Mehrens, primary care physician, and Peter DiGrande, anesthesiologist, were recognized as “Doctors of the Year” for their dedication and work in the South Lake Tahoe community and its surrounding areas.
