Road projects tangle traffic on Highway 50, Pioneer Trail

It will be double-trouble for South Lake Tahoe motorists over the next few weeks, as roadwork is expected to cause delays on the city's two main thoroughfares.
On Sept. 14, Caltrans began working around-the-clock on its $40.6 million Highway 50 project within the city. Crews are grinding and paving the road between Fremont Avenue and Trout Creek. Lane closures are planned between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with traffic diverted to the eastbound lanes during paving of the westbound lanes, and vice versa. Motorists can expect up to 10-minute delays.

Long-time League to Save Lake Tahoe director resigns

League to Save Lake Tahoe Executive Director Rochelle Nason has resigned today, effective October 2011, after nearly 20 years of working to protect and restore Lake Tahoe.

League Program Director Carl Young will serve as interim executive director, with Nason serving as a senior advisor, until a new executive director has been selected.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe to Give $28,000 to Local Nonprofits

Rather than funding many smaller projects as in the past, this year Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation, Inc. (SISLT) will distribute $28,000 to a maximum of five local nonprofit organizations. The goal of this new approach is to encourage applicants to think big and create increasingly impactful programs for the community.

South Shore Lake Tahoe local Sid Loomis continues her work with the Undersea Voyager Project in Catalina on September 17. The 16-year-old was part of the original crew that brought a submersible to Lake Tahoe in May of 2009 to study Lake Tahoe and Fallen Leaf, as well as projects in Catalina and Bodega Bay in 2010.
On Saturday, Sept. 17 team leader Scott Cassell will scuba dive from Catalina to Cabrillo Aquarium near Long Beach for a study on sharks.

LAKE TAHOE — A federal judge has dismissed a suit against the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Sierra Colina project that was brought on by the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

Injunction denied in Angora burn area restoration

An injunction to halt fuel reduction work in the Angora Fire area was denied last month after a lawsuit was filed by two environmental organizations.
A three-person panel of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that an emergency injunction was not needed after a U.S. District Court judge in Sacramento, Garland Burrell, upheld the agency's environmental
analysis. The suit was brought on by Earth Island Institute and Center for Biological Diversity over the protection of a rare black-backed woodpecker.
