SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - SR-89 around Emerald Bay remains closed this afternoon and SR-88 at Kirkwood is expected to reopen shortly after a storm passed through Lake Tahoe, dumping snow and rain on the region.

Due to I-80 closing for most of Sunday because of white-out conditions and unsafe roads, many of those travelers headed to the South Shore to try and use US-50 to go over Echo Summit. That combined with the exodus of tourists in town to ski, many surface streets throughout Meyers and South Lake Tahoe remained jammed with standstill traffic for hours.

Column: Collaboration key to new Tahoe challenges

Warming temperatures pose major challenges for Lake Tahoe's environment, communities, and the outdoor recreation that drives its economy. Research by University of California, Davis's Tahoe Environmental Research Center, University of Nevada, Reno, and Desert Research Institute clearly shows Lake Tahoe is warming.

Slight warming for South Lake Tahoe; Chance of rain in week ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Sunday, a slight system will make its way through the
region, which will bring chances for light rain and mountain obscurations in the eastern Sierra. Gusty east-northeasterly winds as high as 60 kts are expected over the Sierra Sunday evening into Monday morning, as well as the possibility of mountaintop turbulence west of the Sierra crest.

After the cool temperatures, brisk north winds and drier conditions for the
remainder of weekend, temperatures will warm a few degrees early next week with overall drier conditions and lighter winds expected.

Ready for some rain and upper elevation snow in Lake Tahoe?

An unsettled weather pattern and further cooling looks likely for the upcoming week in Lake Tahoe with the best chances for rain from Tuesday through Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Reno (NWS RENO), dry conditions will prevail today through most of Monday, with areas of mid-high level cloud cover especially on Monday ahead of the next low pressure system approaching the California coast. There is a complex weather scenario setting up for Tuesday-Wednesday

Quick response keeps Echo Summit fire contained to small area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An illegal and abandoned campfire near the Pacific Crest Trail ignited a fire on Wednesday evening.

Wildfire knows no season, be Ember Aware year-round

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Cooler temperatures and changing colors of the leaves remind us that autumn has arrived, but keep in mind that fire danger is very high this time of year. Vegetation that can feed a wildfire has had all summer to dry out and is ready to burn. Fall provides the perfect opportunity to check areas where burning embers might accumulate near your home or on your property during a wildfire. The places where pine needles and leaves pile up also tend to be where embers would accumulate during a fire.

Week of sunny, clear skies and highs in the 80s for South Lake Tahoe

Widely scattered thunderstorms will be leaving the Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley Wednesday with no storms expected Thursday onward according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. There will be breezy and drier conditions Thursday and Friday will lead to cooler overnight lows this weekend and early next week.
