Good Morning Lake Tahoe Skiers & Riders…

Powder to the People! Freshies Galore! Get Out Early today… Winter Storm Warning is still in effect, continuing thru Monday Morning. Winds are increasing with the next weather system coming in by late morning, so lifts will operate Wind & Weather Permitting. Wind Holds at some resorts this morning… Lift operations will change thru out the day. Road Controls posted for all Highways in and around Lake Tahoe… Carry tire chains and drive with care. Get After it! Have Fun & Be Safe!

Today’s Weather: Expect Snow with accumulations of 3-7” and 4-10” above 7000 feet. Highs: 30F-35F. Southwest winds 15-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Ridge Gusts up to 70 mph increasing to 95 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Snow and rain. Snow accumulation of 8 to 14 inches with 11 to 19 inches above 7000 feet. Lows 23 to 28. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Ridge gusts up to 120 mph.

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM PST MONDAY…

* CHANGES…Added in blizzard conditions around Tahoe.

* WHAT…Snow showers early this morning with a brief break in snow after sunrise. Heavy snow and high winds moving back in starting late morning. Blizzard conditions with near zero visibility for the higher elevations around Tahoe.

* WHERE…Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Lassen-Eastern Plumas – Eastern Sierra Counties.

* WHEN…Through 4 AM PST Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Travel will be very difficult over Sierra passes including Donner I-80, Echo US-50, Yuba CA-49, and Fredonyer CA-36. Plan double or more the typical travel times. Strong winds could cause low visibilities and power interruptions at times. Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour likely with near zero visibilities at times. If you must travel, this morning is probably the best or wait until daytime Monday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Avoid travel over the Sierra this afternoon and evening if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

WHAT TO WEAR: Dress warm, layers with your Gore-Tex Jacket or Shell. Take warm gloves, a hat or beanie, and wear a Helmet for Safety. Might want to take along a face gaiter or scarf. Also wear good Sunglasses or Goggles. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen (when the sun is out) & stay hydrated at altitude!

SURFACE CONDITIONS: Surface Conditions are Fresh Powder & Machine Groomed Packed Powder. Watch for marked & unmarked obstacles.

SAFETY MESSAGE: Stay on designated Opened Trails only. Respect all rope lines & area closures. Ski or Ride with a Buddy if you decide to go Off Piste – Trees on opened trails. Keep an eye out for marked and unmarked obstacles. Slow Down and observe safety signs on trails with high concentration of skiers and riders… Know the Code! Always stay in control. Be able to avoid objects and people in your Path! Please stop to side of the run where it is safe and always check uphill for skiers and riders before restarting downhill.

CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger will exist at all elevations this morning due to wind slab and storm slab avalanche problems. The avalanche danger will increase to HIGH around midday as a second storm impacts the forecast area bringing blizzard conditions. HIGH danger will last through the night. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.
