On Wednesday, September 28 at 5:30 p.m., people invited to head out there to see the final stage, a project over a decade in the works

Owens River Fire sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin

Owens River Fire in Mono County jumps to 4,500 acres; 10% contained
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/17/2016 - 9:17pm9:00 a.m. update 9/18: The Owens River Fire burning east of Highway 395 and north of Owens River Road in Mono County has exploded to an estimated 4,500 acres. Even with the growth, firefighter were able to get it 10% contained.
Named the Owens River Fire, it is burning in sagebrush and Jeffrey pine.
NDOT looking for young Van Goghs to enter their stormwater pollution contest
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/17/2016 - 7:59pmThe Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is inviting Nevada children in grades K-5 to enter their drawing contest about stormwater pollution prevention. They want to engage and inform the younger generation on this important topic.
Winners will become published artists, with the first place student’s artwork featured on the cover of the 2017 NDOT Stormwater Program brochure, and the second and third place students’ artwork featured inside of the brochure. All student artwork meeting contest requirements will be shared on the NDOT @loveNVwaters social media pages.

Generation Green teens build new boardwalk at Taylor Creek
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/20/2016 - 9:15pmA new boardwalk on the Taylor Creek Rainbow Trail was officially opened on Friday as Generation Green celebrated the results of their labor with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The 100 foot boardwalk replaces an often flooded path around the popular stream profile chamber, a path further weakened by beavers boring underneath what used to be full of asphalt.
Firefighters quickly put out Carson River Resort fire
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/20/2016 - 6:16pm1:50 p.m. update 8/21: Fire officials have updated the acreage burned in Saturday's fire at the Carson River Resort. 29 acres burned have burned and fire fighters are in mop up mode.
The fire is now 60 percent contained.

8:00 a.m. update 8/21: Firefighters have been able to get a 40 percent containment line around the Carson Fire which has burned 50 acres around the Carson River Resort south of Markleeville.

Placer County SAR volunteer shot while looking for missing hiker
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/10/2016 - 4:34pmA Placer County Search and Rescue volunteer was shot in the hip on Tuesday evening while out with a team searching for a 75-year-old missing hiker.
Steven Wolf was part of a three-person team searching between Brown and Fish Creek for the hiker who was last seen near the town of Washington on the South Yuba River. The other two members of Wolf's team found cover and radioed for help.

Lake Tahoe's famed clarity threatened with warming temperatures

Lake Tahoe is experienced warming water, a 4.8 foot drop in clarity, increased algae and a lowering water level.
Thanks to global climate change, Lake Tahoe is warming faster than ever according to the report which covers results from tests conducted on the lake in 2015 concerning water temperature, clarity, invasive species and more.

Woman drowns while rafting on American River near Kyburz
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/11/2016 - 10:27amA San Francisco woman died on the South Fork of the American River near Kyburz while rafting on Saturday, July 9.
Elaine Yi Mau, 32, was camping at the China Flat Campground with friends when they took rafts into the nearby river. At 4:09 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office was told of a rafting accident involving Mau. She had been on a raft with someone who fell off, and when he surfaced, Mau was gone.
USFS using chemicals at 70 sites to remove invasive plants

Firefighters gain upper hand on the Trailhead Fire; 5,595 acres burned and 60% contained
Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 8:05pmFirefighting officials expect the Trailhead Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe to be fully contained by Saturday, July 9. So far, the fire has burned 5,595 since it started on June 28. It is now 60 percent contained.
All mandatory evacuations have been lifted over the fire evacuation area.
Some firefighting personnel are being pulled off the fire, and more are expected to leave in the next couple of days, leaving some to continue mop up.
$583 million to be spent on California roads; Over $36 million in SLT

For those visiting during the holiday and attending one of the firework displays over the lake, expect extremely crowded conditions and excess traffic. Because of the Basin’s high elevation, expect intense sunlight during the day and much lower temperatures at night. Bring sunscreen, a jacket, and carry a flashlight. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Cameron Park teen still missing after hiking near Cosumnes River
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/21/2016 - 7:54pmThe 15-year-old from Cameron Park who went missing while with family members on May 29 has yet to be found, even though El Dorado County search and rescue teams have not given up looking for him.
Joshua Joo, a atudent at Ponderosa High School, became separated from his group in the Bucks Bar area near the North Fork of the Cosumnes River, in what is known as the Cosumnes River Gorge.
Joo is and activer member of the school's Alpine Ski Team and Future Farmers of America (FFA).
Since the day Joshua went missing, there has been an extensive and ongoing search effort to locate him.

Search for missing Cameron Park teen suspended due to high water

On Saturday, May 29 at 12:08 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received a call of the missing 15-year-old who was hiking in the area with family and became separated from the group and was last seen near the river.

Prescribed fire burning near airport in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/26/2016 - 1:38pmA prescribed fire by the Lake Valley Fire Department in the trees and brush surrounding the Upper Truckee River caused some concern by area residents on Thursday afternoon.
Large plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away, and with the burn not on the normal U.S. Forest Service weekly list of prescribed burning, many calls were made from concerned citizens. According to the USFS office in South Lake Tahoe, they alone had dozens of phone calls.

They will survey the plants that volunteers planted last September, water any plants that need a little care, stabilize streambanks and survey for aquatic invasive plants. The Nevada Division of State Lands, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to begin fire operations on Monday, May 23, 2016 on both the Northeast and South shores of Lake Tahoe.
South Shore: Burning may take place off Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, off Panther Lane near the west end of Gardner Mountain and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.
Northeast Shore: Near Incline Village in the Rocky Point area along Tunnel Creek Road.

South Shore family safe after home burns in early morning fire
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/17/2016 - 5:07pmA Christmas Valley family is safe after their home suffered substantial damage in an early morning fire on May 16.
A family of three awoke to the sounds of their smoke detectors wailing and called 9-1-1. At that time, they didn't see flames but quickly exited the home.
Firefighters from the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded at 4:50 a.m. to the 3300 block of West River Park Drive where they found the second story fully engulfed in flames.

Fire agencies to continue prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe

Burning operations are scheduled to take place in four locations:

Off Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road
Off Panther Lane near the west end of Gardner Mountain

Celebrities teeing up for Gene Upshaw Golf Tournament
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/10/2016 - 10:08pmNFL Hall of Famers, former Major League Baseball players and other sports celebrities will gather July 17-18 to once again pay tribute to the former Oakland Raider at the 8th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at the Schaffer’s Mill Golf & Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.
Upshaw, who often played in the Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, died of pancreatic cancer in 2008 at Tahoe Forest Hospital.
