Anthony J. “Tony” Magliari 1930- 2016

Former Sierra Sands school superintendent Anthony J. “Tony” Magliari passed away at his home in Ridgecrest, California, on June 14, 2016, at the age of 85. Born in Los Angeles on October 5, 1930, Magliari, the son of an Italian immigrant, graduated in 1948 from George Washington High School, where he served as student body president. While attending Los Angeles City College Magliari enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve and was called into active duty during the Korean War in 1951.

Local man arrested for South Lake Tahoe bank robbery

The investigation of Friday's bank robbery at the Al Tahoe branch of El Dorado Savings led to the identification of Gabriel Antonio Evans, 36, of South Lake Tahoe as the suspect.

South Lake Tahoe bank robbed Friday; second South Shore bank robbery in three days

8:30 p.m. update 7/1/16: The investigation of Friday's bank robbery at the Al Tahoe branch of El Dorado Savings led to the identification of Gabriel Antonio Evans, 36, of South Lake Tahoe as the suspect.

Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Evans and a search warrant for his residence in the 3000 block of Riverside Avenue. Due to Evan’s past violent criminal history, the SWAT team was employed to make the arrest. Officers, assisted by the FBI, arrested Evans at his residence at 7:45 p.m. this evening.

Motherlode Century Spring Classic

Rolling through ranch, forest, farms, and vineyards, the 5th annual Motherlode Century on April 30, 2016 fulfills what avid cyclists search for. The 35 mile (2,824’ of climbing) loop provides a sampling of all the good elements of riding in the Gold Country, while the 66 mile (6,430' gain), 82 mile, and 95 mile (9,177' gain) routes add a remote canyon with two rewarding climbs and awe inspiring scenery.

South Shore projects win TRPA's Best in Basin Awards

Several South Lake Tahoe projects were awarded this week by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) as being the "Best in the Basin" for demonstrating exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities.

The projects that were recognized upgraded highways, built new bike trails, improved water quality, restored environmentally-sensitive areas, remodeled blighted commercial buildings, and created defensible space for better wildfire protection.

How the City of South Lake Tahoe plans to spend $73 million

City Manager Nancy Kerry and Mark Carlson, the City's Administrative Services Director presented the 2015-16 Fiscal year budget to the South Lake Tahoe City Council during a workshop Tuesday.

"There is a lot we can be proud of," Kerry said.

The budget process has been ongoing since May, involving staff in making the decision on where to cut back, and where to spend.

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe on warrant out of Riverside County

South Lake Tahoe police were called to Barton Hospital on Thursday, August 27 to investigate a call about a wanted subject on the premises.

Kelly Marcus Forte, 48, was wanted on a felony warrant from Riverside County with a bail of $100,000.

The officer arrived and contacted Forte at the hospital without incident.

He is currently sitting in the El Dorado County Jail.

Car thefts in South Lake Tahoe rose in 2013, leveled off in 2014

In the State of California, vehicle thefts dropped 7% in 2014, marking the second straight year of decline.

For South Lake Tahoe, it was the first year of decline in three years.

In 2013, vehicle thefts in the city limits jumped 46% from 37 stolen cars to 54. Following in 2014, there was a drop of 7% when 50 cars were stolen according to figures obtained by South Tahoe Now from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

To date, 2015 is looking to be a repeat of last year with 25 car thefts through June.

The Reno Tahoe International Film Festival has announced details of its inaugural event, set for June 5-7, 2015 . Over 40 top independent films from around the world have been included. Festival executive director, Donna Walden, also stated that some local film entries have been chosen as official selections.

California pot legalization effort is all about details

There’s no shortage of views on the question of legalizing recreational marijuana in California.

That much was evident at a series of focus groups earlier this year, where 48 men and women representing a cross-section of the state filed into rooms with one-way mirrors to share their opinions. The research is aimed at shaping an expected legalization initiative for the 2016 ballot.

Unattended cooking fire sparks Southern California wildfire

Firefighters late Sunday sought to control a Southern California wildfire that broke out in a forested basin, prompting the evacuation of about 300 homes.

The Riverside County fire, near the Prado Basin and the intersection of Highways 91 and 71, was 1,020 acres and 35% contained, said Cal Fire. Evacuation orders had been lifted, but the agency warned nearby communities would experience low-lying smoke. The fire in the densely covered river basin had sent up huge plumes of smoke.

Harrison Avenue Project Starts in South Lake Tahoe

One Way and Do Not Enter signs are now in place in the Harrison Avenue Project area of South Lake Tahoe. Construction is slated to start May 1 but preparation started a few days ago in order to get traffic flowing correctly and to put in parking spots. Crews will also be removing trees for the new parking lot located on the corner across from Sno-Flake Drive-In.

Traffic on Harrison Avenue now flows the same direction as the closest lane of Highway 50 (Lakeview Commons to Al Tahoe Blvd). Traffic will flow the opposite direction on Riverside Drive.

South Lake Tahoe Road Construction Season Starts

It's long been joked that South Lake Tahoe has two seasons: winter and road construction.

Get ready for the latter as it's time to begin the South Lake Tahoe projects.

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, Jim Marino, the City's Assistant Public Works Director, outlined all 13 different projects happening within city limits this year.

Harrison Avenue Project and Final Adoption of Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance on Tuesday's City Council Agenda

Creating street improvements in the Harrison Avenue area sits atop the list of the City of South Lake Tahoe's Capital Improvement Project priorities. Better stormwater treatment, a bike path, lighting, safer pedestrian walkways and ADA improvements are coming to Harrison Avenue in 2014 and the city will vote Tuesday to ratify agreements between TRPA, the state and the city to move the project forward. The project is funded through several federal and local transportation fund sources.

Partial Road Closure on Lakeview Avenue for Wednesday Lakeview Commons ceremony

The dedication ceremony of Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach will take place on Wednesday, June 20. To facilitate this event and to minimize the potential for traffic hazards between motor vehicles and pedestrians in this area, a one block section of Lakeview Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 11 a.m., according to the city in a press release. This closure of Lakeview Avenue will include the distance between Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Riverside Avenue. The re-opening of this closure is anticipated to be around 5 p.m.
