Rise in COVID-19 cases pushes many California counties back in tiers

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - California is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases and state health officials today moved several counties back into more restrictive tiers to stem the tide of the pandemic.

With this direction, El Dorado County was to move into the red tier, the one reserved for areas with substantial cases, but the county has entered the state's tier adjudication process and asked to remain in the orange tier.

Three new cases of COVID-19 reported in El Dorado County; One in Douglas, 48 in Washoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since yesterday, the El Dorado County Public Health Department has reported three new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county told to 47.

Health officials say just one of those cases in actually new, and the other two were listed in the Sacramento County figures. Their identification showed a P.O. Box in Sacramento, but they actually live in El Dorado Hills. Both have since recovered.

A 14-year-old girl missing from South Sacramento since early Sunday morning may be headed to the Lake Tahoe area. Nai-Lu Flores was last seen getting in an Uber vehicle at her grandmother's house at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, April 26.

Reports have placed Nai-Lu at the Denny's in Cameron Park, leading friends and family to spread their search to El Dorado County and Lake Tahoe.

Reports have been filed with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and Uber.

South Lake Tahoe coach facing federal child pornography charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A search warrant served at a South Lake Tahoe home on April 15, 2020, has resulted in the arrest of a local 39-year-old snowboard and soccer coach on alleged child pornography charges.

Timothy Daniel Mackey was arrested without incident by the FBI and U.S. Marshals at his home during the search.

Barton Hospital prepared for an anticipated surge in COVID-19 cases

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Hospital is prepared to handle a surge in COVID-19 patients with an extra 150 beds identified for use if needed, and if that supply is used, more space is ready to be used through the help of community partners.

$10,000 reward offered for information in South Lake Tahoe homicide

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The daughter of a man who was found dead in his home in December is looking for answers and a $10,000 reward is being offered for information up to an arrest and conviction of the person(s) involved.

On December 16, 2019, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were alerted about a body found in a house on Lodi Avenue. When they arrived, they found 61-year-old Jorge Alberto Lemus Campos deceased.

DNA proves innocence of man convicted of El Dorado County murder

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A man who was facing life in prison after being convicted in 2005 for a murder that authorities now know he did not commit, is now heading home a free man. Ricky Leo Davis, now 54, was 20-years-old when a friend of his mother, 54-year-old Jane Hylton, was brutally murdered in their El Dorado Hills home in 1985.

On July 7, 1985, Davis and his 19-year-old live-in girlfriend, Connie Dahl, called law enforcement, saying they were at a party in Cameron Park and returned home to find Hylton murdered.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected this fall or spring 2020.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed in line of duty; Two arrested

11:30 a.m. UPDATE: Deputy Brian Ishmael of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office died in the line of duty early Wednesday after being shot after arrival at a home in Somerset, Calif. They were responding to a call of theft from a marijuana garden.

El Dorado County Sheriff John D'Agostini held a press conference Wednesday morning, updating the public on some of what transpired earlier in the day.

South Lake Tahoe man indicted on federal firearms and narcotics charges

On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, voters will be selecting their new District 1 State Senator, a vacancy created when Ted Gaines won a seat on the state Board of Equalization in November.

O’Neill as Registrar of Voters, effective January 9, 2019.

Convicted El Dorado County puppy broker gets another 240 days in jail

An El Dorado Hills woman who was convicted of felony animal cruelty charges in 2016 has been sentenced to an additional 240 days of jail time for violating the conditions of her felony probation. The jail sentence was handed down in El Dorado County Superior Court on November 9, 2018.

Ginger Turk, 48, a puppy broker, has had many run-ins with the law over the years due to her illegal practice of importing tiny, under-aged, un-weaned, high-priced ($4,000+) puppies from South Korea and selling them over the internet and in person.

Caltrans awards $9.5M contract for Highway 50 repaving at El Dorado County line

The main artery between South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento/Bay area will be getting a much needed repaving job with funds from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the gas tax increase that went into effect January 1, 2018.

Caltrans will repave 200 lane miles on U.S. Highway 50 from the El Dorado/Sacramento County line to west of Sunrise Boulevard in Sacramento County from the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

Funds generated because of the bill's passing come from:
A 12-cent-a-gallon increase on gas excise tax
A 20-cent-a-gallon increase in diesel excise tax

Update on recovered bodies at Fallen Leaf Lake

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department has issued a press release after South Tahoe Now broke the story on November 13 concerning the recovery of two bodies in Fallen Leaf Lake.

Paroled sex offender seen in Meyers arrested in Sacramento

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Office of Correctional Safety Fugitive Apprehension Team arrested 25-year-old Alexander Childs in Sacramento Tuesday.

Childs was a parolee-at-large as his parole had been suspended for absconding and a warrant was issued for his arrest on May 19, 2017. El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies and other South Lake Tahoe area law enforcement had been looking for Childs after he said he was in the Meyers area on Thursday.

Law enforcement searching for paroled sex offender in Meyers

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a phone call Thursday, alerting them of a convicted sex offender in Meyers who had cut off his ankle monitoring device.

Deputies searched for 25-year-old Alexander Paul Childs in the area but were not successful. Deputies have been on the lookout for him and EDSO has notified surrounding law enforcement agencies as well.

The anonymous caller told EDSO that Childs had called her and said he'd been without his ankle device for about a month and that he wanted to leave Meyers and head to Sacramento.

Governor's declaring state of emergency paves way for South Lake Tahoe money

After California suffered through two weeks of storms, Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency on Monday, paving the way for cities and counties to get reimbursed for storm damage.

The City of South Lake Tahoe declared a state of emergency at their City Council meeting last week and is now going through the community to assess the damage.

El Dorado Hills tax preparers headed to jail for $1.8 million in fake claims

An unlicensed El Dorado county tax preparer was sentenced Friday to 3 1/2 years in prison and ordered to pay $1,895,833 in restitution for conspiring to file false claims and filing false claims. Her co-conspirator will be sentenced next week.

Barbara Antonucci, 49, and her co-conspirator, Sherry Taggart, 56, of El Dorado Hills, prepared tax returns for clients seeking to maximize their refunds from the Internal Revenue Service.

El Dorado County BOS appoint interim head of the Community Development Agency

A former member of both the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors and California State Assembly has been named the interim director of the El Dorado County Community Development Agency.

At the BOS meeting Tuesday, Roger Niello was appointed to fill the spot vacated when Steve Pedretti left the position for Placer County.

Niello begins his job November 2.

Before he went into public service, Niello managed the Niello Auto Group for
25 years until 1999.

$583 million to be spent on California roads; Over $36 million in SLT

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) has adopted 156 projects, valued at $583 million, to support needed upkeep on California’s aging roads and bridges, make upgrades to transit and rail systems and encourage use of alternative forms of transportation, including biking and walking. One major project in South Lake Tahoe has been adopted.

El Dorado County teen latest victim of counterfeit hydrocodone

An 18-year-old El Dorado Hills resident is the latest victim of a rash of overdoses from pills made to look like the prescription painkiller, Norco.

In Sacramento County, six deaths are attributed to the pills, and the death of county resident George Berry is now the seventh suspected victim. The pills ingested are actually Fentanyl, which is 80 times as potent as morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin.

Former City of South Lake Tahoe employee now Galt City Manager

Galt City Council members on Dec. 15 were expected to name an experienced administrator in smaller jurisdictions as Galt’s next city manager.

Eugene Palazzo, who started his career in 1989 as a planning technician in Nevada County, has served as Crescent City’s city manager since 2011.

The council vote was not known at press time.

Galt city staff wrote in the council report that Palazzo has more than 27 years of experience in local government.

Processed marijuana stolen during El Dorado County home invasion robbery

11/24/15 update: The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office arrested both Ross and Stone on warrants issued by El Dorado County. When contacted, both Ross and Stone were armed with loaded firearms. They were taken into custody without incident and some of the stolen property from the Greenwood robbery was recovered. Ross and Stone were booked into the Sacramento County Jail on weapons and drug charges. They were also booked on warrants from El Dorado County. They are both in custody at the Sacramento County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Man facing several charges after South Lake Tahoe robbery

South Lake Tahoe Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed robbery on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. in the area of the CVS Pharmacy and Tahoe Beach Retreat Hotel on Highway 50. Two adult males reported being robbed by a man brandishing a handgun and long-bladed knife.

As they arrived, officers received other reports of the suspect firing one round after robbing two other adult men at the rear of the hotel.

Apple juice from High Hill Ranch recalled due to E. Coli outbreak

El Dorado County health officials are warning people to not drink and dispose of any unpasteurized apple juice purchased from High Hill Ranch on or after October 6, 2015 after several cases of E. coli were reported.

High Hill Ranch, located in the community of Camino in El Dorado County, has initiated a voluntary recall of its unpasteurized apple juice following notification from local health officials of suspected contamination with bacteria, likely Escherichia coli (E. coli.).

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe indicted on kidnapping charge

A federal grand jury returned an indictment today against Matthew D. Muller, a 38-year-old disbarred lawyer from Orangevale, charging him with one count of kidnapping.

Muller is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach. He allegedly demanded a $15,000 ransom.

Two million dollars worth of cannabis confiscated in drug bust

A five month long investigation into the Highlands Health and Wellness marijuana dispensary in Shingle Springs uncovered what authorities say was a multi-million dollar criminal operation.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) centered their investigation on tax evasion, money laundering, conspiracy and the commercial distribution of marijuana for profit.

Teenage son arrested in deaths of his family in El Dorado County

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) arrested a 16-year-old boy on Thursday on charges he murdered his family in their Greenwood, CA cabin.

On September 13, Cal Fire asked for the assistance of EDSO after they found human remains inside a burnt residence.

FBI affidavit alleges man found hiding out in South Lake Tahoe confessed

A Sacramento County man accused of kidnapping a Vallejo woman in March allegedly confessed to the crime in a recorded jailhouse interview and said he did it alone, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

Counterfeit ring broken up in El Dorado County

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies arrested five Bay Area residents on Thursay who are accused of being part of a counterfeit credit card ring.

On April 30, 2015 at about 1:00 p.m., deputies responded to Red Hawk Casino for a fraudulent use of a credit card. Red Hawk casino security reported two persons inside the casino attempted to use forged or stolen credit cards in an attempt to obtain cash. One was described as an adult Hispanic man and the other as an adult African American woman.

Remains of man missing since 2006 found in rural area of county

The remains of a homicide victim, killed more than nine years ago and unearthed last week in rural El Dorado County, have been identified.

The El Dorado County Cold Case Homicide Task Force announced Thursday that it located and identified the human remains of Tobias Kaiser who was last seen at his home in Somerset, CA on November 30, 2006.

South Lake Tahoe fire captain arrested on porn charges is resident of Chico

A Chico man who works as a captain for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has been arrested on suspicion of child pornography.

Mark McLeod Wygant, 44, appeared in federal court Friday and is scheduled for preliminary examination Feb. 13, unless he is indicted earlier, which would change the appearance to arraignment, said Lauren Horwood, spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Bond was not offered and he remains in custody at Sacramento County Jail.

Douglas County man arrested in child abuse case; Infant dies

1/10/15 11:45 a.m. update - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a child abuse case involving a 2 month old infant.

On January 10, 2015 at 12:48 a.m., the two month old infant was taken off life support and died. The cause of death is pending autopsy.

Suspect Trent Getty was located in Sacramento, California at a Greyhound Bus Depot and was taken into custody by the Sacramento Police Department. Suspect Getty is in custody in the Sacramento County Jail and is awaiting extradition back to Douglas County, Nevada.

Investigation continues.
