Sugar Pine Foundation Has Busy Planting Season Ahead
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/16/2013 - 9:15pmThe Sugar Pine Foundation's goal is to save the Sugar Pine and White Pine trees from blister rust in Lake Tahoe by educating and and involving the community in hands-on forest stewardship.
The group has several opportunities this fall to help save the trees by planting seedling in areas around the lake. 850 seedlings have already been planted this fall and more will be planted at the following events:
LTCC Teachers Honored for Excellence

O’Laughlin was selected by LTCC students as their Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Lukas was chosen by his fellow faculty members as the Distinguished Faculty Award recipient. The winners will each personally receive $500 thanks to a generous donation by the LTCC Foundation. They’ll also each get to direct another $500 towards the LTCC program or scholarship or classroom materials of their choice.

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will have its annual signature fundraiser, The Fall Food Fest, on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Harvey’s Convention Center. This fun community event will feature great food by local restaurants, beer, wine, tequila, and vodka tasting, silent and live auctions with wonderful donations by local businesses, and live music. The money from this fundraiser is used to fund over $50,000 in grants that are given to LTUSD schools during the school year.
Lake Tahoe Unified School District Enrollment Up
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/12/2013 - 6:14pmFor the first time since 1996, enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District appears to be on an upward trend. There are 102 new students in the district so far this school year, bringing the total number of students currently enrolled to 3,832.
This figure is still far below the number of students attending local school in the 1996-1997 school year when there were 5,978 in grades K to 12.

Main mass of rare meteorite preserved for present and future scientists

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

New LTCC Earth Science Scholarship Honors Former Instructor

The Carl Young Memorial Earth Science Scholarship is being established to honor the meteorology teacher, who died when he and two colleagues were chasing tornadoes just outside Oklahoma City.
This new Earth Science scholarship will be the first of its kind at LTCC according to geology and earth science instructor Scott Valentine, who worked with Mr. Young’s parents to establish the scholarship.

Lake Tahoe science pioneer to participate in national lecture series

Kent will lecture in the National Science Foundation-funded EarthScope Speaker Series about underwater paleoseismology techniques he pioneered at Lake Tahoe with colleague Neal Driscoll of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Ken Smith, associate director for the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno heard it and felt it that Sunday morning. His scientific curiosity drew him right to the lab’s earthquake monitoring network to see what registered on the more than 150 reporting stations. He found an astonishing series of registrations.

An international team of scientists presents these and other findings in a study published Friday, Dec. 21, in the journal Science. The 70-member team included nine researchers from UC Davis, along with scientists from the SETI Institute, NASA and other institutions.
