The new year brings new laws in California
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/26/2018 - 8:58amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are new laws in California in 2019 that will affect those on the road, bike paths, eating at restaurants, paying bail and receiving minimum wage. In 2018, 1,217 bills made it to Governor Brown's desk and he signed 1,016 of them which are now new laws.
Here is a highlight of some of those laws which will soon be in effect:

Heavy traffic on I80 with chain controls; US50 to South Lake Tahoe much easier drive
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/24/2018 - 11:28amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - `With holiday travelers and a Winter Weather Advisory both headed to Lake Tahoe, expect delays on the roads.
On I80 near Donner Lake westbound traffic is at a dead stop as drivers head towards chain controls and snow. As of 11:00 a.m. Monday the controls are in place from Kingvale to the Donner Lake interchange with those expected to expand as the storm enters the region.

Will there be a White Christmas in Lake Tahoe?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/21/2018 - 11:55pmLAKE TAHOE - Santa Claus might be navigating his sleigh through a snow storm above Lake Tahoe on Christmas Eve, but exactly how much snow will be on his landing pads (aka rooftops) will be made clearer the holiday gets closer.
What is certain is a Winter Storm Watch has been issued and in effect from Monday morning to Tuesday morning, making Saturday and Sunday the best travel days of the mountain passes prior to Christmas.

Community gives families displaced from South Lake Tahoe apartments some holiday cheer but still in need of permanent housing

As the deadline loomed panic set in for the residents of 3546 Spruce Avenue, they tried to find new housing in a city where available rentals are almost non-existent, especially for those of a lower income level without financial means to pay higher rent and deposits.

Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club helping out Sierra House families
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/17/2018 - 11:03amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One hundred percent of the operations of Sierra House Elementary have now moved over to the Al Tahoe school site (where the Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club is also housed) until possibly mid-February. Due to the size a split schedule is in place to accommodate the students, with some students only attending in the morning, others only in the afternoon.
The Boys and Girls Club (Club) is assisting parents with that split schedule and in partnership with Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be offering free programs and activities during the school day.

It all starts with the wind advisory in place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Winds will be from the south-southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. This will result in waves on Lake Tahoe from 2 to 4 feet, the highest ones along northern shore. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

This system will have a more southerly track and bring a round of light snow to the Sierra and a few showers into western Nevada. Generally quiet and dry weather is expected to persist for some time after Monday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

A wind advisory is in place from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Winds will be widespread from the south 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Gusts to 65 mph in wind prone areas and Sierra ridges will likely see gusts over 100 mph.
Sierra House students could have split schedule at Al Tahoe until mid-February

At first it was believed that work could possibly be completed by the time students return to school after the holiday break but now that the hired restoration specialists are getting into the walls and ceiling the scope of work has increased.
Belfor cannot commit to the scope of work until the crews get into their job, so the plan is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As of today, the

They had parked their car on the top floor of the five-story parking garage at Heavenly Village, left their two dogs Titan and Comet inside and hit the slopes for three hours.

Fire update: Sierra House Elementary to relocate all grades Dec. 17-21
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/07/2018 - 7:37pmAfter further evaluation on their school restoration and cleaning plan, Belfor has asked Sierra House Elementary to be vacant starting the week of December 17.
This access with no students or staff present will facilitate clean up and reconstruction so that the job can be completed thoroughly and with integrity by the time school resumes after the Christmas break.
In order to accommodate Belfor, Sierra House Principal Karin Holmes has let those affected they will be moving all of students and staff to Al Tahoe Elementary School (the Lake Tahoe Boy's and Girl's Club site).
Fairly mild South Lake Tahoe forecast with some chances for rain and snow

gradually decrease in coverage over the weekend with drier and warmer conditions this weekend according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Mountains will remain mild and in the sunshine. A weak system brings the potential for some light
rain and snow early next week. Although there are no signals for strong storms, the pattern looks to remain active through at least mid-month.
Letter: Concerning that LTUSD staff doesn't feel safe in reporting potential threats to safety

We are all deeply grateful for the success of Lake Valley Fire and all the specialists and District staff that have bent heaven and earth to help remediate all aspects of this situation. I write with deep respect and gratitude for all that LTUSD leadership has done for our family and community as well.

Parents show up at school board meeting to voice Sierra House fire concerns
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/07/2018 - 12:52amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Attending the December 6 special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School Board were concerned parents, teachers and staff from Sierra House Elementary, enough to fill the room and into the hallway. They were there to ask the Board why the school was reopened just two days after the November 11 fire that took out a hallway, a reading room, teacher's room and caused damage to ducts and panels above the ceiling.

Following on the heels of the November 11 fire at Sierra House Elementary, two more schools in LTUSD had issues this week that caused the schools to close.

Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/04/2018 - 8:37pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual community grant EpicPromise celebration, 93 local nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.9 million in cash as well as additional in-kind product support. Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.
Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.

Caltrans thanks South Lake Tahoe businesses and drivers for patience during highway project
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/02/2018 - 11:44pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Phase II of the three-year, $57,000,000 Highway 50 project from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge in South lake Tahoe is complete and Caltrans will back in the Spring of 2019 to work on the final phase.
The project is a water quality project that has also addressed ADA compliance on curbs, widened bike paths to six feet, added bus pullouts, replaced curbs, gutters and sidewalks, added new pavement, added one stop light, and will have replaced two others and added left turn lane improvements at Sierra Boulevard when it wraps up next year.
Sierra House update: VOC air quality tests returned showing safe levels
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/02/2018 - 6:29pmDECEMBER 2, 2018 - The fifth update from Sierra House Elementary School in South Lake Tahoe since their November 11 fire has been released, and the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) sample results have been returned.
While there are trace amounts of various compounds that are associated with every day use, all samples tested well below the regulatory levels. These results along with yesterday's sample on asbestos all showing negative results, school will be open on Monday, December 3.
